After recently opening up Pillars Of The Earth I was awestruck by the board illustration. Looking through the beautiful artwork and detail I realised how much I appreciate beautiful gameboards, so I set out to make a list of beautiful painted-like boards. Being large, is always a plus!

Note that I am not looking for beautiful abstract boards, like hekla or yinsh. (although I'd be tempted to add hekla, its a beautiful board). I am looking for more "detail" and a handpainted feel, possibly moving away from geometric forms.

Still, if it's beautiful and, most of all, feels special, then it probably is, and it belongs here.

So there it is, I am a sucker for beautiful boards!

feel free to add, just get a feel for the list by my submissions first!

All these games and no mention of Portobello Market?

This is a recent release with a very beatiful board indeed. Seems publishers are spending more and more money and time on getting the boards look good.

Actually it was the custom made board and pieces by Eddy Bee that I fell for. I even found the same Mafia figures on Ebay and I bought some other stuff to make a custom version myself. Like in a lot of other situations, the plan was fine but the work still needs to be done......

I've noticed a serious lack of Fantasy Flight games here, and even though there's a lot of debate about the company (some people saying they don't play test their games), I think they produce absolutely stunning games with great production values. So I start here by introducing the Runebound series. This is Runebound, 2nd Edition. The "vanilla board" is still fantastic, transporting the player into a fantasy world that, depending on the card expansion played can have the adventurers fighting dragons, trying to stop Giants from invading from the icy north, to fighting cults, etc. Great game, great system, great map. The next Runebound map is...

Runebound - The Island of Dread. Now you have seas and oceans, and islands to explore. To travel between islands you have to hire captains and engage in combat on the savage seas. There's even a small island that you place off to the side where the final boss resides, a island with a volcano that is belching heat and steam that takes the image of a skull. The board is actually placed on top of the 'vanilla board' and changes the location of the game. Same world, different area. Great game. This leads to the next (and darker) expansion...

Runebound - Midnight. Again, this expansion board is placed over the original board. The world is darker - and rightly so. Evil has won, and the Heroes are in hiding, fighting the good fight against a powerful foe who's Lieutenants roam the land. I haven't had the chance to really play this one yet till the end(I will soon, though), but I play tested it for a little bit. Great feeling of dread in this one and the blasted and ruined look of the map definetely helps. This leads to the latest board expansion for Runebound...

Runebound - Sands of Al-Kalim. This is possibly the best expansion to Runebound because it adds a lot to the game, including Day/Night cycles (your choice when to adventure - during the day you suffer fatigue, etc. but the monsters are weaker/during the night you are stonger but so are your enemies!), new items that help you cross deserts, and an interesting system where you create your Heroes' story as you play. The map is once again brighter - actually, brighter then the others by the fact that you are in a desert setting. Not seen in the picture is an actual sandstorm token (rather large, too!) that is put into play and moves around the board. You don't want to get caught in it!

Runebound - Sands of Al-Kalim is a brilliant Runebound game, and if anyone were to be introduced to Runebound I'd almost tell them to get the original set as well as this expansion because it adds so much to the game. Plus one of the new characters (my favorite) is really hot.

Until the next expansion, then (well, unless the board sucks!).

There's a surprisingly large number of maps in this list. And here's another, of a sort.

I love how artistic the game Carcassonne is, and the artwork itself -- cartoon-ish though it might be -- is just right for a light game entirely about making the gameboard of the meandering southern France countryside as you play.

I'm surprised it's not on this list already. It's the game that got me back into boardgaming and I think it's beautiful.

Thia map is attractive enough that I have seen it hung in a frame. Now admittedly, it was a wargames store and the designer sometimes worked the register there, but it is a pleasant map. The picture offered here does not show the immense chain of fortifications in Northern France and Flanders.

Lovely map which shows Marlborough's actual entrenchments.

Marlborough's lines cannot be perfectly achieved in the game, particularly the sap trenches, but the correspondence between his lines and the lines you construct, if you are aiming at the same point of the fort, is unmistakable and impressive.

Normally I'm not a big fan, artwise, of maps or games with point-to-point movement boxes. They obscure a great deal of the underlying features, especially when grouped close together.

Paths of Glory is in that sense no exception, but when the whole map is layed in front of the players, it does exude great deals of atmosphere. It's a perfect fit for this wonderful WWI game, and I hope that the P500 gameboard makes the cut... It will then be, truly, a beautiful board.
