One particular aspect of games that really perk my interest are novel game mechanics. I'll readily admit - I'm quite shallow when it comes to getting my attention, so I think many things are 'cool'. What else do people think are funky game mechanics?

(This is my first geeklist, and I'll freely admit that I'm making this for the sole purpose of seeing what else people recommend with interesting mechanics. Thanks for your contribution in advance!)

Edit 04/27 - thanks everyone for adding to the list! My wishlist of games has suddenly grown by a staggering amount. I'll never be able to get through all the games here, plus quite a few of them aren't available (e.g. Space Hulk, Fireball Island!)

I like the market/auction mechanic in Hermagor. It's an auction because you have to spend money, but you may not quite end up with the goods you want to sell because it also depends on the positions of your market traders. Added to that if you don't mind missing out on a few goods in the market your income from that round will tend to be better giving more flexibility for movement in the subsequent phase and placement in the market next round.

I'm a sucker for Rube Goldberg games. When I was ten, I loved this game and its less well known cousin Fishbait. Who cares if the game was roll-and-move and included no decision making at all? It was always fun to assemble the trap, and everyone had their favorite piece to add to the mechanism.

The rock-paper-scissors concept is present to some degree in most wargames, but never so explicitly, or simply, as in World in War: Combined Arms. The battle boards allow for a sort of battle mini-game within the larger strategic conflict.

Character ladders

Sure, it's just chrome and dice-chucking, but WoW character development involves enhanced powers based on selecting prerequisite powers. Other adventure games have less shmexy methods, like boring higher stats or getting more stuff. Character ladders are a standard in the RPG world of D&D, and it's nice to see this development in a boardgame. I'm sure it we'll seee future incarnations beyond dice-rolling, but at least it's a start.

The scoring mechanism of Tigris & Euphrates: you score points in four different colors, but your final score is the number of points in the color of which you have the least. All players are forced to play a balanced game. You may score big in red, but if you have no green points, you lose. One big victory will usually only secure someone's position in one color, or two at most. That does not mean the game is over.

I love the idea of a game more involved, exciting and interesting than Risk without making it too complex for casual gamers. Nor does it take the time or involvement of Axis and Allies, and its all thanks to its nifty little combat system. Its the reason I bought the game!

EDIT: I just saw after posting that this game was already posted two or three items up. But my post stands as a testiment to its greatness!

In any TCG, card advantage is the key to victory, having more options in hand usually gives you the edge. Resource management is another factor where, of course, having more resources gives you the ability to actually pick and use more options.

In The Spoils, you can easily create a card advantage by spending resources to draw more cards. It also becomes more possible to draw a card you need, significantly reducing the luck-of-the-draw factor... assuming you have enough resources.

The ability to play any of the cards in your hand as resources and the minimal need for actual resource cards is another plus. Of course, there's always the decision of whether to play a resource or draw a card. A player's ability to make the right calls at the right time can easily turn the tide of the game.

This choice, which serves to eliminate one of the biggest problems in any TCG really drew me in to this game.

I love the idea of the "Lightning System" used in the game. For those unfamiliar with the game, there are two "Turn tokens" and you play when one in front of you.

This is from Tom Vasel's review of the game:

TomVasel wrote:
The way the "Lightning" system works is thus: When a player has a turn token in front of them, they take their turn. After finishing, they pass the turn token to the next player on their left who does not already have a turn token. Therefore, if a player takes a long time on their turn, the other turn token can pass right by them, and they lose turns as a result!

It sounds like a really cool mechanic which would keep the game ticking over but I don't know it actually works that well judging by the reviews! I've never played it but if I find a cheap copy, I may just give it a go!

First you play your 6 or 7 turns. Then, after this 6th or 7th turn you start turning Fate Cards. Most of them just add a bit of chrome and epoch flavour, some are just for fun. But hidden among them are 3 cards that instantly - and very much historically - kick one of the four players out of the game, no matter how close to winning militarily they are. And it can be the last card of the deck... or the first one! You should have seen the faces of the players for the 1st Friedrich World Championship last year when the Fate Cards were being turned...
