Introduction: Every once in awhile, and online friend would ask me recommendations for anti-virus, anti-spyware, and other protection against malware. Rather than retype the same response, here's a list of useful utilities.

Note to newbies: The list is a little unwieldy once you get past the anti-virus and anti-spyware applications, so only start with them first. Many of today's utilities and techniques address malware, which includes viruses, spyware, and unwanted applications running on your computer.

:) Feel free to add any recommendations and tips to this list, so our friends' computers will be secure and safe!

This is my anti-virus of choice. The free version works great, and it auto-updates to stay up to date. I've long since abandoned the bloated & slow McAfee & Norton products. Highly recommended.

I like it, but the free edition does !@$!@ DAILY !@#!@# updates which drive me up the wall personally because my portable is mostly off, and when I turn it on each day, it wants to update. Wait a few minutes already when things have started up and I am just reading email! (I wish it was weekly or something). Other than that it works great.

But I agree, I am sooo glad to leave that Norton trash off my computer.

McAffe can eat a bug! That corp ticked me off so much by charging my credit card without my approval. Okay, so that information was in an updated EULA that I didn't read. But seriously. What do they expect to happen when I see a mysterious charge on my credit card? Enraged customers. On the plus side, their customer service was helpful in reversing the charges. On the minus side, it was hell trying to uninstall McAffe.

AVG all the way! I prefer the daily updates and scans. It does slow down my computer a little, but not enough to be a nuisance.

Oh, and Solamer, you can turn off automatic updates, if you wish.

Definatly the only choice for me. Its does the same job as mcafee and norton do, but better and for free.

I have had numerous viruses caught, isolated, and deleted (I don't trust "cured" files, scorched earth for me) by this one. It's not bloated, unlike Norton and McAfee, much easier to use, it doesn't nag you at 6 months before your subscription is up (yeah, thanks for asking McAffee I still have 6 months, it's hardly urgent to buy another year), and you can't beat the price. It can be a little slow on a laptop with a slow drive during startup, but if that's the price I have to pay, I can live with that.

Maybe I'm missing something here. I can't find a free version of this software on the link given. The only offer is for a free 30 day trial.

Edit: I found the software by googling for it. Try this http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

AVG also has the best anti-spyware in the business. The only down side is the free version has to be updated and run manually.

Yeah, it's hard to find from the main page. Even simpler you can just use:

Just downloaded and installed. It was not easy to find on their webpage.
It's cool and simple and I hope efficient.
I'd like to know how it compares to AVAST in terms of load on PC and effectiveness...

Norton is the same way and seems to take way longer to update.

I suspect that's intentional (as a sales technique).

The version that I have on my computer updates by itself and can be scheduled to run on a timed basis... I have them both set overnight, and rarely have any problems...

Anti-virus: Avast!

Ease of use: Basic
Necessity: Mandatory
URL: http://www.avast.com/

Notes: After installing Avast, make sure you turn updates to manual. On a slow machine, an automatic Avast update may suddenly cause your machine to inconveniently slow down even further. Right-click on the Avast icon in your tray. Select Program Settings... -> Update (Basic) -> Ask when update is available

Picture based on a cool pirate game. Arrrr.

My anti virus of choice. I think we all can agree that Mcafee sucks, and Norton blows...and where I work, we get their stuff for free! They can have them.
