The trade table was a smashing success. Not counting games combined in lots, there were about 170-odd games on the table.

Each person entering any amount of games had ONE chance as being picked as the start player. After that, if your game was selected you got next pick (including if you selected your own game, withdrawing it).

The records are not unblemished, but this is how the chain progressed as near as I can tell. If there are corrections, please let me know. The record is a little spotty in places.

Please comment on your selections, thoughts on the choices or any corrections you find. Did you choke when it was your pick? Did you snag a real clunker? Did you get a steal?

I was very pleased with how the trade table worked out....and plan to run the event next year as well, if my services are needed/wanted. Thanks to everyone who participated.

This was my offering. Despite realizing that Descent would go early in the picks, I never really had time to consider what I would take with the next choice. I seemed to have read some lukewarm reports about Fire and Axe, so Shogun seemed like the next best choice (of games I don't already own). I was really hoping we'd get some wargamers to throw some good stuff out there. There was some, but nothing I could get excited about picking.

Believe me, you really don't want to build a system that encourages people to dump crap on the table in the hopes of getting the last pick.

As someone who participated, the draw for first pick worked just fine. I don't think anyone begrudged the draw winner the extra game.

I could see that someone might think that winning the draw is too valuable, since you get both the first pick and two picks for one game. I didn't mind, I think of it as kind like a raffle prize, but you could lessen the value a little by perhaps having the draw winner not get a second game (ie when their first game gets picked, there is another draw for the next one).

The only problem I see with the current system is that it encourages people to add a single very cheap game and nothing else, giving them an equal chance as anyone else to win the best game on the table. The variant I mentioned above doesn't do anythng to solve that however, and I had no impression that anyone was out to game the system anyway.

I had thought about making the submissions public. I think the peer pressure of knowing what people put up there alone would help keep people from cheaping the table like that. Anyway, its just a theoretical concern, since no one did that (added just one cheap game). In some ways, its a raffle. I have no problem with that.

Even IF someone put in a crappy game and got the first pick, the rest of the traders aren't really harmed. Whoever had their game chosen first is going to get their pick of the table, and so on. No one really gets stuck with a crappy game in return for their good game. Incrementally, each pick, things balance out fine. Its just someone got really lucky with the first choice. And its usually Jorge and Eva.

I figured Taluva would go in the top half of the draft, but when I arrived and saw that everybody was playing Taluva because it was on the "play it and win it" table, I figured it might go even earlier than I thought.

And it did. I had made a few mental notes about what I might pick, but most of that escaped my brain under the pressure to pick something quickly (also I wasn't watching the draft, being in the middle of the game). I had remembered the new copy of Fire & Axe, but obviously that was more desirable than I had expected, and I had an interest in Way Out West because I like Wallace, and it went 75th! Even though Ynnen had tried to sabotage his offering by writing a memorably poor review of Mare Nostrum on BGG, I thought I'd give it a try. With the expansion, it was a lot of game to pick up in exchange for a pretty cheap game like Taluva.

When I picked this, I heard an approving murmur from the crowd, so I felt properly validated. This seems to be a love it or hate it type of game, so I'll be happy to give it a shot and move it along again if it doesn't grab our group.

Well, I appreciated your murmur. I had worried that everyone would laugh at me for picking a horrible game.....and then realize that I had forgotten to wear any pants. That would have been like a nightmare.

I remember seeing You're Bluffing and a game with the name "Fraud" in it's title. Maybe Fraud Squad?

The mystery box had a label on it saying that the MSRP of the games was between $70-$80, but that a person could probably pick up the games for about $40 online (please correct me if I'm wrong about the label, I'm going from memory). The label also stated the BGG ratings for the two highest rated games inside, one of which was 7 point something and the other 6 point something.

After thinking about it, that label kinda screamed "box of crap" to me. It was really fun watching the box get opened, and my heart sank when I saw the contents despite pretty much knowing that the MSRP/online purchase price would have to be higher for anything good to be inside.

The 6 games listed in the above 2 posts are correct, and Armadi's recollection of the "label" is also correct. I had just moved and was unpacking all of my games, and thought it would be funny to throw some crap (as has been so eloquently stated) back into one of the moving boxes for the trade table.

Sorry man, but I honestly didn't think anyone would take the risk that early. The one solid Euro in there was You're Bluffing (the English edition of Kuhhandel), and you should make an effort to play it.

For next year's geekway, I owe a mystery box that actually has a pleasant surprise in it. ninja

Maharaja was my offering. I've given that game several tries, and just can't seem to get that really "good" playing out of it. Most people won't play it a second time.

Anyway, I have only played Goldland once, and with a couple incorrect rules. I like the theme. I like Goldsieber. And I think this is a game that's relatively hard to come by, so if it doesn't improve after playing by the correct rules, I should be able to trade it...I hope. But I'm really thinking this is a good family-style game to keep in the collection.

You mean where someone can theoretically take the Wandering Monk all over the place, just to give money to people? I've heard of that possibility, but I've never actually seen anyone do it.

The only thing I don't like about Maharaja is that usually someone notices who's about to win, everyone realizes nothing can be done to stop it, and there's a collective throwing up of hands and demands to just call the game.

Anyway, enough hijacking - back to the regularly scheduled Geeklist.

A quick question:

"After that, if your game was selected you got next pick (including if you selected your own game, withdrawing it)."

If you selected your own game, thus withdrawing it, then got the next pick, don't you end up being short on the trade table?

In other words, if there are five traders, five games on the table, and I go first and select my own I would get the next pick and pick another game. Now there are only three games left for four people.

yea this trade table was awesome. i didnt even know about it till i got there.. (they should promote it more for next year) so i had my wife bring up 5 random games. next year i will be sure to bring about 10 or so games because it was so much fun.

i would keep the same format, as it really encourages people to bring high quality games to get higher picks. i was impressed with the overall quality of the games.. is there a way to average the bgg rating of all the games in the trade? that would be interesting to see

I agree, and thanks to Chester for all of the effort put into the trade table. I was really impressed with how smoothly it went, especially as there were so many games on the table.

I can see how a booby prize could lead to someone gaming the system. All you have to do is bring a bunch of game that are worth less than FLUX (can you say LCR?). But what you really want is for people to bring good games, not bad games. So what if there were no booby prize?

The benefit of the chance of getting the lucky first pick should easily outweigh the chance that your game is the last pick. Why? Because the chance of being the one "unlucky" person cannot be greater than the chance of being the one "lucky" person. But you can ensure that the chance of being "unlucky" is less than the chance of being "lucky" by bringing a nice game. And if you are "lucky", you get something really cool whereas if you are "unlucky", you lose something lame. I'll take those odds any day!

That's a good point and I think it would work.

But, since I want the Geekway to be successful and I'd rather err on the side of being too generous I think next year I'll do this:

I'll make a mental estimate of what I think the worst couple games on the table are worth. (Hey, if they're great, it will be higher.) Then, I'll choose one of a few options for the booby prize that is roughly equal or greater value to the game on the table.

I'm thinking, another $15 gift certificate OR a card game (Fluxx-like) OR a Taco Bell taco. Stuff along those lines. I'm not going to announce what the "booby prize" is prior to the event. I don't want people to TRY to get it. Perhaps when the event gets more closer, I'll decide to choose something more shameful.

But again, I think odds are that the worst game on the table is still submitted by someone as a serious addition...and I don't want anyone to leave feeling like they got screwed.
