BGG Hot 40: July 2007

This is the seventh edition of the Hot 40: The games which were most played in July, in terms of the number of different people who played.
See the January edition for more info:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/19941
Summary for July:
Carcassonne reclaims its top standing in the Hot 40 after Notre Dame interrupted its 5 month streak at number one. Notre Dame fell back to 2.
The big mover in the chart is Zooloretto, which shot to number 3, up from 21 last month.
However, perhaps the most interesting development is the rapid increase of Caylus Magna Carta (10), at the expense of its parent game, Caylus (29).
Other games to reach all-time highs (since January 2005) in July:
5 (up from 8) Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery 10 (up from 63) Caylus Magna Carta 33 (up from 65) Can't Stop 34 (up from 40) Ca$h'n Gun$ 39 (up from 60) Vikings
Notable games to reach all-time lows (since January 2005) in July:
Ticket to Ride (11) Battlelore (24) Caylus (29) Samurai (56) Arkadia (74 down from 22 in May)
Biggest improvement in rating over the last year:
+18 Diamant (41 to 23) +6 Coloretto (21 to 15)
Biggest decline in rating over the last year:
-33 Blokus (31 to 64) -29 St Petersburg (20 to 49) -28 Samurai (28 to 56) -25 Caylus (4 to 29) -24 Memoir '44 (16 to 40)
Bonus Stat:
Total number of unique players for each of the big game franchises:
603 Carcassone 602 Settlers of Catan 636 Ticket to Ride
(Includes all seperate games which would be reasonably listed under one game. For example, players of Seafarers of Catan are included, since they would reasonably NOT list their play in two places, but players of The Count of Carcassonne would likely list their 'play' of the game in two places. Including ALL expansions etc of Carcassonne amounts to 939 players)

Anyway...
I had a nice long example showing that weighting a unique # of plays list for length of the game...doesn't make any sense.
I also showed that weighting a # of plays list (non-unique) by game weight is very cool, and gives us the total # of gaming minutes spent on each game. That's actually a much more useful statistic than the unique # of players I think. The problem is getting an accurate game length #, as I think some people still argue that the stated #'s aren't accurate...
Other than that gripe, a very cool list

I think I understand where you are coming from - multiplying number of players by game length does not produce a number that is 'meaningful', in the sense that you can't call it anything. However, it is simply a rough attempt to adjust the number of unique players for the tendency of players to play shorter games rather than longer. That is, Descent is played by less people than Lost Cities partly because Lost Cities is a much shorter game. As I said in the June edition of the list, I think that the play time weight is a bit too much in favour of longer games.
Weighting for game complexity is another way of doing the same thing, which would have a high correlation with game length - longer games tend to be more complex.
I agree that accurate play times are a problem, and vary a lot for each game. For example, I can play 3-player Settlers in 25 minutes while some people have 4-player games which go from 3 hours!
In addition, games played online can be much quicker.
