I usually don't stray too far off topic from gaming, so my apologies before hand.

I was born and raised in the small town of Castle Dale, Utah. I now live in Stansbury Park, but my family still resides in Castle Dale. The area of Carbon and Emery Counties is commonly known as Castle Valley, named for the massive rock formations located in the area, including those in the San Rafael Swell. Castle Valley is made up of small coal mining communities. Underground mining is dangerous. Everyone there knows it and all have been reminded of it through the years. Mine disasters are dreaded, but all realize that the possibility exists.

On Monday, August 6th at 2:45 am, the Crandall Canyon Mine, (more commonly known as Genwall by the locals), collapsed and trapped six miners. That area in the mine does not have large amount of methane gas or CO. Also, there is a big store of oxygen, and seepage of potable water in the walls. The miners, if they evaded the cave-in, have a real fighting chance to survive. There has been some disheartening news of late, but I am still optimistic.

The six trapped miners, including a relative of mine, are friends and family to many in the community. I have friends involved in the rescue efforts and it is nearly impossible to get them to take a break from the rescue teams, even when utterly exhausted. The Mayor of Castle Dale is my brother and a high school teacher. He is doing everything he can for his students and children of the miners. Most people are doing everything they can. My wife's brother, a fellow avid boardgamer, quit the Crandall Canyon Mine earlier this summer to become a school bus mechanic. He was on the crew that is now trapped. All in the area are affected.

The agony and urgency in waiting for information this week has brought back vivid memories. I was a senior at Emery County High School during the Wilberg Mine disaster near Castle Dale. 27 miners were trapped in a mine fire. The wild swings of emotions during the first few days were almost unbearable, and I cannot forget that awful sinking feeling as the days wore on. All the miners perished. It was a year before they got to the bodies. The mine is still closed. Everybody lost someone close to them.

Mining disasters are part of the history of Castle Valley, including the Castle Gate mine explosion near Helper that killed 172 men back in 1924. The area is often reminded of the dangers of coal mining. There have been other recent mining tragedies in the area, including the Aberdeen and Willow Creek mines. My heart went out to the people in the West Virginia Sago mine while watching the roller coaster of emotions from that community.

Thanks for letting me indulge my thoughts in the form of a geeklist. My hopes and prayers go to the people affected.
