"Searchers after horror haunt strange, far places" -- H P Lovecraft

One of the true treats in literature is when an author is capable of creating a literary world. Not just a good book but a complete universe that encapsulates the story being told. J K Rowling's Harry Potter books are a perfect example of this. In her books we not only read about Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but we explore a magical world that exists side by side with us, in the shadows of our own very world. It's rare but for those authors who can create and flesh out these fictional universes it's a fantastic treat for their readers. Mind you this ability isn't limited to just writers of the traditional fictional novel. George Lucas did it with his Star Wars Universe. Gene Roddenberry with Star Trek, Stan Lee with the Marvel Super Hero Universe and L. Frank Baum with his Land of Oz. It is this creation of a complete world in which their stories take place that raises their work and helps the story being told reach a new level of depth for it's audience.

H P Lovecraft is one such writer. His creation is called the Cthulhu Mythos and it is a world of cosmic monsters, horror and madness. I'm not going to go into a long description of Lovecraft and his stories as it's to expansive to be covered properly in such a short space as a geeklist introduction and chances are you are already familiar with at least some elements of his fictional world. Perhaps more so than myself. My intent here is not to examine Lovecraft's world itself but to examine how games have allowed us to explore it in the same way games about Star Wars, Superheroes and Harry Potter allow us to explore the worlds created by people like George Lucas, Stan Lee and J K Rowling.

The purpose of this list is as stated above is to explore the different games that immerse it's players in Lovercraft's universe of the Cthulhu Mythos. It's an amazing variety from the collectible card game to the classic boardgame. It's a popular game theme that seems if anything to be growing in the hobby.

The 2005 version of Arkham Horror. Truth is this game has little in common with it's 1987 ancestor other than the theme. It features the fantastic game components Fantasy Flight has become known for and lots of them. I've had to store all my bits in a Plano storage box (which works really well by the way).

Likely if you have played any one Cthulhu Mythos game it's this one.

My solution to the death of a thousand fiddly chits problem.

You know that the theme is becoming mainstream when Steve Jackson decides to parody it with a Munchkin release. Not big Munchkin fan by any means but when you've been devoured and driven insane in enough Cthulhu games you'll at least get a chuckle out of the cards.

Another collectible card game but this one seems to have caught on better than Mythos did. Published by Fantasy Flight it uses a lot of the same symbols as in the boardgame which is a nice touch as it ties the two together for folks who play both.

For those interested I just finished several microbadges for this game as well as two new ones for the Arkham Horror boardgame. They cost me 1 sanity each to make.

One of the earlier collectible card games also published by Chaosium. I tried to get into the game but never could get interested in the whole build a card deck concept which is a large part of collectible card gaming.

This game had some really cool artwork with a lot of it shared with Chaosium's role playing game which they were publishing at the same time. One card featured a picture from the cover from one of their RPG supplements called Arkham Asylum I think that I always thought was really cool. You can see in the picture below. Yes the attendants at the mental hospital aren't exactly what you would call human. devil

One of the first Cthulhu games. This game was created by Chaosium which in general is more well known for their role playing games than anything else. Specifically their two big games Rune Quest and Call of Cthulhu. This game was not one of their best nor one of their more popular. Still it has a certain sentimentality for many of us for who our introduction to gaming in Lovecraft's universe started with Chaosium and it's products.

A now OOP CCG from the world of Lovecraft. Play the role of an endbringer, and battle for the souls of mankind in order to be the first to bring about the Apocalypse!

The cards stack, allowing you to "stitch" together your minions in order to form abominations.

I really wanted more from this game, the art is great, and the unique cards made for an interesting game mechanic.. Throw this in the "When will we make the M:TG topper?" pile at Wizards of the Coast.

I love this game. This would be kind of a fun beer and pretzels card game no matter what theme you used with it. In this case however they did a really nice job of incorporating the Cthulhu theme into the game and keep it tongue in cheek at the same time.

The game includes things like the tires man was not meant to mount which you can put on the car man was not meant to drive. Game strategy can include human sacrifice and having a zombie as the car's driver.

Investigators move around the board on an outside track trying to raise their prime requisites and gain equipment to fight eldritch threats popping up on a map of the United States in the middle of the board. Player who kills the most monsters wins - unless the monsters win in which case he gets eaten first. Not a bad game, but some of the equipment cards give an unwieldy amount of money (can you spell "broken"?)
