For the purposes of this list, a tabletop miniatures game is one that is (intended to be) played with miniature models, not counters or abstract "meeples", and that regulates distances by measurement, without any form of grid (hex etc) or area or point movement.

Please add games to make this list as complete as possible. However, no expansions please, nor multiple editions of the same game.

(Games that are playable with or without a grid are OK, but please add a note about this when submitting a game to the list or I may delete it as a grid-only game added mistakenly.)

Due to a bug in the code for the sorting methodology, this is actually the Highest Ranked Game that meets your criteria.

Maybe you could add something in the description to each of the entries above like this:

UNRANKED - See below for #1 Game

I know others have posted Bug reports to Aldie, but I'm sure he has a pretty full plate already.

I understand why this is number 1, since it is what Warhammer should have been (mechanics and gameplay). However, I have never understood the 'cheaper than WH' argument, since you get only 3-5 miniatures for the price of a GW boxed set.

(Yes, I know it's plastic.. but you can't even play the game with just one Warmachine starter.)

Why can't this be #1? Really interesting and intuitive rules, awesome miniatures and amazing fluff, cool steampunk influenced fantasy genre...
This game is a really great game.
I, however, do not thnk it is steampunk. It is heavily influenced by steampunk, but, due to the setting, is a lot more like fantasy. Full metal fantasy, that is.

Game usually played on a hex map, but the Rules Cyclopedia also presents rules to play the game as a pure miniature game, using the hex-counts in movements/range as inches, and each 1/6 turn costing one movement point.

There where also rules for how LOS and different scenery affected what part of the mech could be hit, IIRC.

So this variant qualifies as a proper miniature game.

I never understood why games played on uniformly demarcated maps with models were not considered "miniatures games" anyway.

If I hex grid my table, it just makes it easier to measure movement

I agree with you, SJBenoist. As long as you're moving miniatures and fighting and the rules have real depth, it's a miniatures game.

This game is a never-ending one. You can go on from the skirmish battle to the huge space conflicts around a planet. And you can tie everything together!

I am a huge fan of Battletech even if in the last years new rules have created a little of confusion. At infantry level the game is a real mess, but it seems many players are going to stop at the mechanized (Battlemechs and tanks) level, so this is not a major problem.

(Our Mordheim campaign of many years ago died from boredom with just about every game degenerating to a big melee. This game could use a better "missions" system.)

It can be played on its own or against Warmachine, so hard to work out if it is an expansion or a stand alone. The mechanics are similar but with a few key changes.

It is regarded by many as probably a touch superior to its brother due to them being able to fix a few of the flaws in balance (game wise and army composition). Only rated lower here due to less people rating it.

Hordes, as it was developed at about the same time, is really a counterpart. The important thing is that it is a totally different game.
Yes, it has similar and sometimes identical mechanics to Warmachine, but the fundamental game is different. Warmachine places an importance on resource management; where do you allocate focus? Hordes places an importance on risk management; how far can I push my warbeasts before they try to kill me?
It might not seem like a giant difference, but it really is. It's as big a difference as running out of gasoline and pushing your car until it explodes.

Cancon (Canberra) & MOAB (Sydney) both have big competitions. At Canberra Gamers there may be up to four tables (of 12 or 14) all playing FoW on any given evening.

More than a few German Civil War battles as well....

Note that there is a stock setting, with minimal information.

The setting recieves more detail in the supplements Full Thrust Fleet Book: Volume 1 (Warships of the Major Powers: 2183) and Full Thrust Fleet Book: Volume 2 (The Xeno Files).

The setting is shared with Dirtside II and Stargrunt II.

I rated it a '5' because from all my playings the winner was the player who rolled initiative the most consistently. All the clever maneuvering meant nothing if you get blown up before you can move.

I find that a great many 40K players have indeed taken "poles" in their respective "local areas." Ahem.

I wish Rackham would put out as much ridiculous fluff detailing as GW. AT-43 looks to me like a very promising, not in-your-face, not sometimes-pseudo-comical, not (pardon) British-feeling setting, which puts it above 40K in my eyes.
If the minis had as robust a range as 40K, with, you know, dozens of tank configurations per army and what have you, and those were consistent with the superior quality of the individual soldier sculpts, then it would at least be on the path to dethroning WH40K. As it is, I think not.

But it should by all means be given the Nobel Peace Prize for having potential for greatness...

Warhammer goes 10mm. Unlike its bigger brother, it places a lot of emphasis on command-and-control. Basically, a unit only moves if a commander passes an order test to move it, but as long as he keeps passing the test a commander can move a unit repeatedly.

In my opinion, the best thing GW has done. This is a top-down miniatures ruleset, with the focus on the problems and strategy of C&C, rather than a ground-up ruleset (which would start with a fixed ground and time scale, and figure the rules based on that).

Had never heard of this until Origins this year. It's got some great mechanisms and the miniatures are top-notch. There are also a lot of them: 7 factions each with a lot of units.

On the downside it's more expensive than many other games, but so worth it.

I have been a wargamer for 15 years now.
Played: 40k, necromunda, mordheim, warmahordes, battletech, warhammer fantasy, malifaux, heavy gear.

Infinity for me is simply... The best miniature game ever made, the feel you get for playing this game is cinematic, even the most common soldier can become an epic hero with a chinese sci-fi kung-fu mega heroic action and change the course of battle. The ARO (automatic response order) is the best rule feature ever made, with this, you never stop playing, is always your turn and make the game closer to reality than any other, and on top of all this, without question, the best looking minis in the market!
What else do you need?

The game come from Spain and is growing slow, but is growing and i think is going to be on the top 5 in a couple of years, we`ll see.

Then download the free rules and proxy the models. If you like the game, at least the money won't be wasted. And the minis only seem expensive, the price is comparable to other metal minis (e.g. GW) and you can always get them used

Confrontation: The Age of the Rag'Narok merges this with Rag'narok for a larger scale game. I'm not sure how the relationship between these three should be categorized; should I add separate entries for each?

I wouldn't, since they're all Confrontation.

There has been, however, a huge loss of support when this went plastic in my area.

ALSO;

I have in my posession a huge collection of Confrontation miniatures, but never played the game. The symbols on the cards (and my lack of proper French) have always stopped me from actually playing this.

I'm quite sure that Confrontation ranks so highly because this game has the best miniatures (I've ever seen for a commercial fig game).

You can download all the cards in french from the Rackham site now that they stopped the old metal confrontation.

Confrontation: The Age of the Rag'Narok (plastic pre-painted version) is not the same game as the discontinued Confrontation (metal high quality sculpts), it is set in the same world but other rules.

Anyway if you buy metal minis, the rules are easely to obtain in English, I'm surprised you have them only in french, and the cards, well those are free to get now on the site.

Different Games.

Confrontation: The Age of the Rag'Narok is completely different from the previous Rackham games and has more in common with AT-43 than with the other Confrontation games.

Confrontation (Skirmish) and Rag'narok (Mass Battles) are similar, but are both stand alone games and, while being built on the same foundation, have different rules for certain things.

Confrontation - Dogs of War (Warband) is the odd one out.
Technically it is labeled as an expansion to Confrontation and you need the Confrontation rulebook in addition to the Dogs of War rulebook to play it, but its relationship to Confrontation is more like that between Mordheim: City of the Damned and Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

I have added Rag'narok and C:TAotR as separate entries. The later shows up as unranked as it's flagged as an expansion, which appears to be wrong.

It's good, but not as good as the previous edition, Epic 40,000.

This is a generic fast-play fantasy skirmish game. I'd like to try it someday. (Edit: Have now; see comment below.)

I would strongly encourage anyone who have a few minis about to try this out! Fast, fun and cheap! Also, with the "official" stats generator, you can generate stats for any of your miniatures.

I finally got an opportunity to try it at GothCon 2010, and I thought it was pretty good. Fast play and the rules are mostly intuitive. The chaos factor is high, but if you get screwed completely by the dice you probably have time to attempt revenge straightaway.

The points system did appear to have a few bugs; in particular, sufficiently poor troops compute out as zero points unless we're missing something.

It is possible to have models worth zero points, but one point is considered the absolute minimum. Also, models worth less than 5 points are considered non-combatants such as prisoners in a special scenario. This is covered in Song of Gold and Darkness

The rules are certainly clearer, but I miss the light troops from DBA and I 'm not entirely happy about how heroic individuals are handled in HOTT.

i'm a fan of HOTT as it's so easy to get into, using 6mm figures you can get up and running for about £15 for 2 players.

The ability to use any figures of your choice lets you get really creative with army bulding.

Also found this really fun using the rules for double sized armies and having 2 generals per side.

The entry says this is "hex-and-counter", which appears to be wrong - the images has it played on square grids or ungridded boards. Perhaps someone who actually knows the game should submit a correction?

ETA: Seems someone has.

One of the standards for ACW gaming. One stand is 150-200 men. In my opinion, it works best for medium sized battles. For the big battles, you need lots of stands, lots of players, lots of time, and a really big table.

Current edition: Warhammer 40,000 (fifth edition)
Previous edition: Warhammer 40,000 (fourth edition)
Original edition: Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

(Why do these editions have separate pages, when 2nd and 3rd don't? Darned if I knew.)

Same thing goes for the recent addition for a separate entry of FFG's cosmic encounter reprint. Doesn't make sense and I suspect there might be commercial interests involved.

Anyway. This (2nd ed) was my first miniature wargame and I must say: we had lots of fun with those extremely unrealistic viking close-combat situations, where two special characters would end up in the middle of the battlefield, locked into melee, for hours, while everything else blew up around them. The fluff is probably the main thing that keeps this going and 2nd ed's cheap hero rules actually did a good job at capturing the story's spirit.

It remains, however, one of the undying cashcows of the GW monopoly and deserves to be hated for it.

Warhammer 40,000 is an atmospheric game of fantasy combats set in a far-distant dark future.

The rules are a bit obtuse. Even so, I was able to figure out the rules accurately with a couple of friends and no one to teach us. It still took a few games to get the hang of it.

The game requires the purchase and construction of little plastic soldiers. If this is not appealing to you, the game will not be either.

Personally, I have built an army of Space Marines over the last two years: For me, Warhammer 40,000 (or simply 40k) is a very relaxing, very enjoyable hobby that encourages artistic experimentation: there's something immensely entertaining about seeing your friends' paint a plastic monstrosity and refer to it as "Gorgator the Destroyer" with a straight face!

Understand that to play 40k requires a bit of cash, a willingness to slog through a rulebook which is, generally, quite friendly, but also fairly thick, and a few friends who are willing to spend their time and money on the same.

You may be surprised at the creativity this game engenders!

If that's not appealing to someone, one might wonder what they're doing reading this geeklist at all!

(Unless, I suppose, they hate plastics specifically, but it ought be possible, if expensive, to play WH40k with all metallics.)

Generic SF system. Focuses on infantry, meant for forces from a few squads up to a company in size.

The sister game Dirtside II handles bigger encounters with an emphasis on vehicles.

These are best infantry rules around. Never found a better system until Force on Force came out this year. Stargrunt II is a groundbreaking game with its elegant mechanics.

The backgound is a real problem anyway, it is not very appealing, but the games is so beautiful you can adapt it to everything. I use Stargrun II rules to fight infantry encounters in the Battletech universe for an exemple, having totally get rid of the Battletroops rules.

This is a great skirmish-level game. All figures are single individuals, with good or bad heroes having great influence on the out come of the battle. Beautiful figures by Game Workshop, but other lines are available.

Which makes one wonder why it's called a "Strategy Battle Game". If any qualifier is called for, surely it's Tactical?

One'd think galley warfare would lend itself well to minis play, but apart from "De Bellis Navalibus", a DBA variant floating about the 'Net, I can't offhand think of any.

(We-ell, Man'O'War has galleys, but it's not really the focus.)
