I was introduced to the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer by the Board Game of the same name, and not the television show. Oddly enough, this was even before I was much of a Board Game Geek.
Several friends and I had just wrapped up a session of a Marvel Heroes RPG (which we still haven't finished to this day!) and we were invited to stay and play some boardgames. First we played Fury of Dracula. (The original - at that point there was no reprint) Which was great. Then our host pulled out Buffy the Vampire Slayer (US). Our host stood strong under a few minutes of intense mockery and insisted that we give it a shot. Of the four of us playing, only she had played it before, or even watched an episode of the show.

We played it three times.

She sent my roommate and I home with the first season.
Early the next morning we knocked on her door, begging for season two.

Over the next two years, my roommate and I watched every single episode of Buffy's seven season run, as well as all five seasons of Angel and the sole season of Firefly. But Buffy will always be my favourite of Joss Whedon's creations.

Without further ado: My Top Ten Episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Note: Episode text from http://www.buffyguide.com
Another Note: I can't reccomend the board game enough - Just don't play the UK version. It's not at all the same game and not worth spitting on. The US version is really fun.

Weird . . . I've been rewatching season 7 the past week and I just finished the episode before this one. "Dirty Girls" was on my schedule tonight.

Sorry Nathan! I should have put some kind of "May Contain Spoilers!" notice up at the top!

Hopefully your experience is not ruined!

Tough to not see spoilers given the show has been off the air for years now... Also, there's this film called The Crying Game and... Oh, never mind :)

BTW, not sure I will EVER re-watch season seven, and I'm almost a fan-boy (maybe that's why lol), except maybe the final episode...

SPOILER!!!!!!

Xander's reaction to Anya's demise... uh, okay... were they feuding off set or what?

Okay, I can't resist adding a few comments of my own, as my Buffy/Worlds of Whedon experience has been somewhat similar to yours. I just finished re-watching season seven...again, so Buffyville is pretty fresh in my mind right now. Random thoughts follow...

The end of this episode is awesome, and I certainly didn't see it coming. Giles reading the caption is precious.
Oh, and one can't forget "We need to make a door." "You can do that?"

Buffy as the helpless wimp was a bit too something, I thought, but the Willow/Oz stuff was great, and I kind of liked how they referenced Xander's experiences later.

One of my favourite things about this show is how everythings matters!
Seemingly inconsequential things from the earlier seasons will pop up again and again over the course of the series - like Xander's military "experience."

(Also one of my favourite cards in the game!)

And wasn't this one the first to reference Giles' past as Ripper?

One of my faves too.

Hated this episode, but not in a bad way, if you get my meaning. Well done, but not an episode I would point to as something I really enjoyed. I will say, I thought the end of the previous episode was note-perfect.

I still maintain (as does my wife) that possibly the most tragic character in the series (after Angel, Buffy, Anya, etc. hehe) is Miss Calendar.

Trivia: Willow was supposed to be visited by a vision of Tara. Amber Benson refused, not wanting to upset the viewers with an "evil" Tara.

Goddamn I hate Amber Benson for that. This episode would have gone from good -> incredible if she'd been there.

I felt that season 7 was pretty weak, but this episode was definitely one of the few standouts. Really well-written, manipulative dialogue... and the intro music went a long way to set the tone for the show.

I have to agree that this could have been so much better if Amber Benson had returned.

Don't feel it, know it. Season 7 was weak. As was season 6 (thank goodness for the musical though). The steady progression from "let's kick evil butt" to "I'm so angsty I can't stand myself" was not nearly as entertaining for me.

This explains the apparent contradiction between the "Season 7 (and 6) sucked" meme and the "Top 10" episodes from Season 7 (and 6). Your complaint is not about the writing, it's about the story arc. When the focus shifts away from the story arc, the quality writing shines through.

Chosen (s7ep22)

Buffy comes up with a plan: The gang makes an attack on the First's army, aided by Willow, who performs a powerful spell to imbue all of the Potentials with Slayer powers. Meanwhile, wearing the amulet that Angel brought, Spike becomes the decisive factor in the victory, and Sunnydale is eradicated. Buffy and the gang look back on what's left of Sunnydale, deciding what to do next...

Loved it the first time, but some facets bothered me later. Given what that amulet seemed to do, it made Buffy's plan seem entirely unnecessary. I try to justify it by telling myself her action was necessary as a delaying tactic to give the amulet time, but even then I have to admit that she didn't know what the amulet did so her plan had nothing to do with delaying. Enough niggling, plot holes aside, it was a great end to the series.

Damnit. Again! Ok, I'm going to stop reading this list. I'd assumed that there wouldn't be any noteable episodes in season seven because they have mostly sucked so far. I guess I was wrong.

My problem with Chosen is that when it get right down to it, the plan Buffy came up mirorrs the one the Japanese had in 1941. "We'll attack a superior enemy and fight it until something happens." Buffy's writers were kinder than those the Japanese had to deal with.

I recently polled my closest Buffy watching friends (6, including myself) and Hush ended up being tied for 3rd best episode overall.
The Body was number 2, and Once More with Feeling number 1.

This is the only Joss episode that I didn't like, in part because it's a let-down at the end of the season. After a few watches, I have begun to appreciate the quirkiness of it, but not enough to consider it a "Top 10" episode.

I think this is a great choice for #2. It's not just a dream sequence, it's an exploration of the characters' inner thoughts, provided in more detail than anywhere else in the series.

We watched all these in order from Netflix.

Funny thing is, I had never heard of this episode until the night we watched it and we were thrilled. Finding it for the first time right when it makes sense in the storyline was great. Later on we watched the additional stuff that told us that they had several episodes to build up the storyline.

I rather likes the music. Tara (Amber Benson) sings very well, and I loved the music with Sweet (Hinton Battle). I would love to find more music by either of them, or even similar music to the style Sweet used.

Any ideas where to find a similar character of music?

Contrary to popular belief that Joss pulled this particular rabbit of the hat first, the first of this type of genre/musical show that I am aware of is The Bitter Suite ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bitter_Suite), which was an episode of Xena that also featured the cast suddenly singing while going through a big crisis (in this case, Xena was actually trying to kill her sidekick in a bout of grief over her dead son). This ep aired almost 4 years before OMWF.

MUSICAL SPOILERS:

Speaking of spoilers, I watched this from the perspective of only having seen up to season (I think it was) four as I didn't watch the show first-run until season six so I was catching up with reruns.

My wife and I are staring at the screen:

Willow is Gay? HUH? Of course I saw this coming right back from season one when she was all over Xander and then later with Dr. Evil's son. It was so obvious she was over compensating and... never mind, write it off as TV-stuff.

Buffy and Spike WTF? This one was also obvious given he was a mass murderer and killer of former slayers so it's obvious she would be attracted to... yah, uh huh. :p

I was fortunate enough to be involved in a stage production of this episode. A buddy of mine, who was finishing up his degree, decided to do the entire thing on stage at the university Black Box. I played Giles, and my daughter played Dawn. I even did a "Previously" recording to catch the non-fanboy audience members up to speed. It went very well, and was a blast to do. Every day we would just look at each other and say, "Hey, we're in Buffy!" Then we'd giggle like schoolgirls.

It's nice to know a lot of other people like Dopplegangland as much as I do. I also love the end of the second season. I also think season 7 was a good evolution, and think Dirty Girls was a great episode. Caleb is one of the best, if not the best, Buffy bad guy.

"Lie to Me" is awesome. That and "I Only Have Eyes For You" would be 1-2 on my top 10 list.

Season 7 is weak relative to the first six, and an especial letdown after the greatness of Season 6, but still better than most anything else that was on TV at the time.
