Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

artfuldodge2 had just put up this game. Unopened starter set. Throw your hat in the ring!

If this doesn't work out, we'll put up another game here to give away.

Pit, lightly used, but complete. Could never get two people to play with me, and has sat on a shelf. A solid 6.5 rating, and favorite since 1904.

Party game extravaganza. Complete and fun, as far as party games go.

Also included is Guesstures , an awesome charades-turned-to-11 game.

And to top it off, one of the best games for quick thinkers I've ever seen; 24. No, not the game with Jack Bauer. In this, a card is drawn with four numbers. The quickest to figure out how to find 24 gets the point. It sounds a little dry, but it turns out to be a blast.

And all this can be yours for the fabulous price of FREE. Yes, you read that right.

I'll ship out using media mail. If you want it shipped any quicker, I just ask for the difference between the shipping costs.

I offer the brazilian edition of Reiner Knizia's Samurai. It has a totally diferent art from the american/european edition, but it is the same game. The rules are in portuguese, but you can find the rules in various different languages just here on the BGG. The game itself is (almost) language independent, for exception to the players aid.

So far we have 12 participants:
1 - Radib Wookie
2 - davido
3 - r0xjo0
4 - gmcash
5 - blahmcblah
6 - HRune
7 - quozl
8 - Marky_marc
9 - troken
10 - ghcstr
11 - Merkles Boner
12 - Salamon

I will give untill today at might (23:00 in Brazil, 19:00 CST) to some last minute entrance, then I will draw someone.

Sorry for the delay on the drawing. The number generated at random.org was 10, so ghcstr is the winner, I will contact him right now. Thanks for everybody.

Well it looks like I'm up next. To keep this thing going full steam and in the spirit of the season, I offer up Mission Red Planet. I have played the game a couple times and it is fun, just doesn't get enough play time with my group so I want someone else to have it. The game is in great shape and even has extra boards for the planet Mars and the launchpad. I will completely cover shipping to anywhere, but I reserve the right to ship using a slower method to minimize the cost.

To allow the anticipation to build to intolerable levels, I will decide the winner next Friday. laugh Good luck everybody!

Okay, before I announce the winner I need to say something.
I noticed a lot of people hesitantly entering this drawing because they didn't think they had a game that could "match" the one being given away. I want to discourage this mentality because I don't think it is consistent with what this chain is trying to accomplish. The chain is one of generosity. If every winner tries to match (or exceed) the quality of the previous offering, this might as well be called the Randomized Trade Chain. To me, generosity is defined contextually based upon whom is doing the giving. What I mean is a person is generous when they give a lot based on what they have to offer. If you don't have a "great" game to offer, just put up whatever you think is good from what you do have. Maybe even consider putting up something that you are initially hesitant to part with. As a psychologist, I know as fact that people tend to overestimate both the intensity and duration of their emotional reactions to events. The practical upshot of which is giving away a game you feel some reservation about giving away won't be nearly as painful as you think for as long as you think. The flip side of this is that the recipient of THIS game is also not going to be as happy for as long as he anticipates either. Now that I've sucked all the joy out of this...

Here is a recap of the entrants:
1-r0xjo0
2-anglotiger
3-unixrevolution
4-larryjuice
5-trojandoc
6-davido
7-twinge
8-Marky_marc
9-IndianaJohn

The winner, courtesy of random.org is #7 twinge! Congratulations!

Hooray! I've only played M:RP once, but it was fun and I look forward to trying it again =)

So, my offering... the classic Carcassonne. Played maybe once and in excellent shape.

Alternatively, the winner may choose to take Conquest of Pangea instead if they would like (Missing one turn reminder card. One raft marker has a crease and one Dominance card is a little scuffed on the back. Box bottom bulges inward a bit on one side; top is fine and has no split corners.)

In case the winner wants to re-gift their prize to a friend for Christmas, I'll end this listing next Wednesday on the 12th to ensure time for shipping.

Hmm, only two entries for this? I guess everyone that wants Carcassonne already has it!

And the coin flip indicates that the winner is...

Wow! I actually won something. Thanks, Erik!

For my offer, I will put up an in-shrink copy of Buy Low Sell High. The game is good, but didn't grab me as much as other Knizia's do, and I can't imagine it would play that well with just 2 here at the house with my wife. If I want to play it with more than 2, I can do so at my mom's house where she has a copy, too.

As a bonus, I'll throw in any two of the following (winner's choice):

Tile Chess - Excellent condition

IZZI solo puzzle - Good condition

Cinq-O - Good condition. Two copies.

Labyrinth: The Card Game - Box is beat-up.

I will end the drawing next Friday (the 11th) and contact the winner that weekend to get shipping information so the games can go out first thing the following Monday.

*I will ship internationally, but I will only pay up to the first $9 (about what it will cost to mail the games in the U.S.) of shipping; the rest will be the winner's responsibility.

All right folks, it is time for some plastic, American gaming goodness!

Now available, for free, is a brand new, sealed copy of Marvel Heroscape!

I will also throw in Abracadabra and Solo if the winner would like them.

We'll give it a week of entering. I'll draw for it at 3pm CST on Thursday, March 13th.

Good luck all, and I'm looking forward to giving this away...and playing Queen's Necklace!

EDIT 3/7/08

Upon consideration, I've decided to add a little more excitement to this one. And recognize that not everyone is into plastic.

The winner will have their choice of Heroscape Marvel: The Conflict Begins

OR

Carcassonne: The Castle

OR

Carcassonne: The Discovery

Same ending as before folks...take you're pick...everything is great fun!

EDIT 3/13/08

In light of the extended downtime here on the Geek today, I have decided to wait on drawing ONE day. I will now be drawing for your choice of one of three great games on:

March 14, 2008 at 3:00 PM CDT

Good luck all!

EDIT 3/14/08

Wow...22 entries. Just goes to show choice is good. Going to random.org for a number between 1-22, and I got...17!

So the winner is Mr_Six!

It sounds like he'll be getting Marvel Heroscape. He'll be next up to post, and I'm geekmailing him now. Congrats, and thanks everyone for the great response!

I'll put up an unopened still shrink wrapped copy of Bang! as the main offering. (I just happened to have an extra one running around.) And to sweeten things a bit I'll also toss in:

Abduction from Eden Studios

and

A deck for Brawl featuring Tess from the ClubFOGLIO edition.

Both of the sweeteners are in like new condition having been opened but only played once.

Due to my work schedule, I'll give you until Thursday March 20th to sign up.

If there aren't any takers by then I'll revise the offer.

Good Luck!

***EDIT***

Well, here we are. Three people interested in Bang! + sweeteners. (which maybe means the sweeteners weren't all that sweetening I guess) Good ol' Random.org tells me that the new owner is now:
