Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

Grognard Chain

Thanks to Stephen Stover I now have myself a copy of Scratch One Flat Top. So, in exchange I will throw up a New in Shrink copy of Tobruk: Tank Battles in North Africa 1942

I will take entries for one week, and will make the drawing in the evening of the 23rd.

Well that was a difficult choice, but I think we have our winner

Mystery Box Chain!

Here is the new entry in the Mystery Box Chain!

Alright, this is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone in this chain is going to get a FLAT RATE PRIORITY MAIL BOX stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff. There are only 2 rules:

1. You must put more than one game into the box.

2. You are also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box. Those who guess the hint get a second entry.

If you win, post what you got in the box and start the next one.

My hint(s):
This game is out of print, loved by some, but hated by more it seems. Riding on the coattails of a much more magical game, this flopping wonder used an existing brand that geeks are known to love as its major selling point.

The winner will be determined via some random method on Friday, February 27th

Don't forget to post what you get to this geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

Edit for Winner!!!

It is Friday (errr actually wee morning hours of saturday, I just woke up and realized I had never pulled a winner!!!) Time to choose!!!
The people with their names in are:
Space Monster (signjc)
Jeremiah Lee (Jeremiah_Lee)
Gordon Yu (Angry Duck)
Lisa Wong (hugz313)

Calling upon the eldritch powers of the old one, and tossing the bones of divination, the powers that be have decided that Space Monster (signjc) is the winner of the Box Of Myster, and all associated curses, runes, and tomes of power!
Be looking for my GM and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I did!

One more quick edit:
I posted the contents of my box to the thread. It starts here:

HOT OR NOT NISB CHAIN!!!

Here are the new standardized rules, blah, blah, blah:

1. The game offered must be unplayed and still in shrink. Alternatively you can offer a game that may be out of its shrink wrap, but still unplayed and unpunched.

2. The game offered has 48 business hours to get at least 6 thumbs. If it does not get 6 thumbs then the person who offered the game must add something to the mix. If you are forced to add something to sweeten the pot, it does not have to be another NISB game, it can be anything - GeekGold, dice, a DVD, anything at all. This must be done every 24 business hours until the offering gets 6 thumbs.

3. If the NISB game offered should get 12 thumbs before 48 business hours have gone by, the person offering the game can close their offer and draw at that time. This is to prevent people from holding out for sweeteners and giving the offer a sense of urgency. If you wait too long, you might miss out!

4. The Chain will continue until I win another game, meaning it will be a "closed chain" of generosity. However, I have several NISB games I plan on offering, so I hope to keep this going for some time, as long as interest continues.

5. Remember, if you want to throw your name into the hat, you have to give the geeklist entry a thumbs up. Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game.

HOTTIE or NOTTIE NSIB Chain

Thanks Dellarana! I look forward to trying out Mr. Jack. My turn!

I'm offering a Z-Man release from last year that didn't get too much press. It's an abstract featuring hidden information, coordinated movement, promotions, and CHUNKY WOOD!

Players control 12 pieces who start out able to move 1 space, but most can be promoted to move further as the game progresses. The maximum move for each piece is hidden information. You win the game by having your king control the center coordinate at the beginning of your turn. You lose by having your king captured. Movement is performed by placing the "magnet" (a large wooden block) on a coordinate and moving friendly pieces along the connected spokes their maximum distance towards the magnet. The game features clever placement and bluffing. Looks like fun. I have a copy for myself, but I haven't played it yet. This week, maybe?

The copy I'm sending you is in shrink, of course.

EDIT: Wow. Do people hate abstracts that much? How about if I add a word game to tempt you with? No? A trivia game? Boy, you people are picky!

Here's an added game (I can't be bothered waiting 48 hours for nobody to show up!) that may incent another bloke or blokette?

Pecking Order

In the shrink.

EDIT #2:

Okay, I've decided not to change my offer, but I will add one more game and if there are no other takers I'll send the lot to UndeadViking who can then revise the rules as he sees fit. I open and punch most of my games as well, even if I'm only reading the rules because that's part of the pleasure of opening a game. I do have some other shrinkwrapped options that I maybe should have started with, but who knew? Once you start listing multiple games, shipping costs become a consideration as well.

So, with that in mind, my third offer will also be on the smaller side. Another 2008 release. I did play this once with my son, but there is nothing to "punch" in the game, so all that's missing is the shrinkwrap! Comes with a board, a boatload of bakelite dice, and a nice hefty drawbag.

Set Cubed

Sorry, folks, if the offers weren't tempting enough. I'll do better next time!

The RULES:

RESULTS

Looks like we got some takers after all!

1 - Undeadviking
2 - Angry Duck
3 - Peter Loop
4 - gdapkus

And the result according to Random.org is....

2 - Angry Duck

A geekmail is on it's way! Thanks everyone.

Pick Me

It's time for a new chain. Here's how it works. I put up an item - in this case a $50 thoughthammer.com gift certificate. If you'd like to get the gift certificate you have to get me to pick you.

Leave a comment to the item describing the item(s) you're willing to offer up as next in the chain. It doesn't have to be a game, it just has to be cool. I will pick what I think is the coolest item next Saturday (March 8th). People can help me decide what's coolest by thumbing the item they like the most. However, I am free to ignore public opinion.

If I pick you, you list your item, and give people some time to leave comments, then you pick what you think is the coolest item from the comments left for your entry in the chain.

This process is repeated at 10 times. The 10th item listed is the FINAL item in the chain. The rules for winning the 10th item are special. Leave a comment that is thoughtful, inspiring, witty, or strange indicating why you should get the 10th item. The public will vote on who should get the 10th with their thumbs. Do NOT thumb your own comment. You can only thumb 1 comment. You can change your vote up to the deadline. The person who is listing the 10th item decides any ties.

[Edit: TO ENCOURAGE OUR INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS TO PARTICIPATE AND MAKE THE CONTEST EVEN COOLER, I'M GOING TO PAYPAL THE WINNER $7 TO DEFRAY THE COST OF SHIPPING - THAT IS ALL - KEEP ROLLING.]

Get your entries in and your thumbs in tonight. If I stay up late tonight I may pick the winner after 12:01 a.m. EST on March 7, 2009. So thumb your favorite offering, make your offer tempting to get thumbs. Good luck and thanks for participating!

This is item number: ONE in the Pick Me chain.

Well, I'm going to give give the people what they want:

Congratulations to our first Pick Me winner Diane Close - Her gorgeous tile drawing bags are sure to be in demand, and the two games she offered are quite appealing --> the former #1 king of games, Puerto Rico, or a copy of a cool hard to find small publisher game, Scripts & Scribes. The people loved it, I loved it, and she got 12 thumbs! Great offer!

Honorable mention to: Undead Viking (yay Battlestar Galactica and hemp jewelry - 8 thumbs) and the thebrainy (10 highly regarded abstract games --- 10!!!! I am overwhelmed at the sheer bulk of gaming goodness!!! Could you honestly have even afforded to ship them out? - 6 thumbs).

Hopefully, we'll see lots more cool offers as the Pick Me Chain continues.

Mystery Box Chain

Through thick and thin, the Mystery Box Chain keeps on rolling! After what seems like ages, I've finally won a Mystery Box, and I have to send something mysterious in return. This is the second mystery box I'm sending out so it's going to be a doozy!

Before you decide if you want in, you should know: I don't rock, I don't get around, and I don't do anything quickly. If that doesn't get you excited, I don't know what will.

Rules:

1. Mystery Box contains two or more games.
2. Mystery Box is non toxic, unless you eat it.
3. Mystery Box can be delivered throughout the U.S. in a flat rate package.
4. Mystery Box was created by a team of packaging engineers who discovered a way to fold dimensions to create extra space.
5. If you win a Mystery Box, you have to tell us what you got here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124/page/3
6. In an Age of Despair, Mystery Box is our last greatest hope.

The next person in the proud lineage of Mystery Box Recipients will be chosen Saturday. [Edit: Not today Saturday, but like next Saturday] [Edit: Yes there's a clue in there] [Edited for more salt]

I have hidden a clue as to one of the mystery games in this post. So far only 1 person has attempted to guess the game. His guess was incorrect. I have UNDERLINED some language you may find helpful, but you must get your guess in soon. I may pick the winner at any time after 12:01 a.m. on Saturday March 7. Therefore, if I stay up late I will pick a winner. If you get your guess in and it's correct your name will be entered twice in the random drawing to determine the Mystery Box winner.

Disclaimer: Results may vary. The contents of the Mystery Box as depicted in the What's in the Box Geeklist may not be typical. Mystery Box is void where not prohibited. You should not taunt Mystery Box or leave young children unattended in the presence of Mystery Box. Some unsettling may occur during shipping. Mystery Box has not been tested on animals, and consequently should not be given to Llamas or Emus and probably Ostriches. Mystery Box is not redeemable for cash, magical beans, or livestock. Mystery box is not angry, it's just a little bit testy.

Pick Me

This is item number: TWO in the Pick Me chain.

Here's how the "Pick Me" chain works: I put up an item and if you'd like to get it you have to get me to pick you. You do this by leaving a comment for the item, describing the item(s) you're willing to offer up as next in the chain. It doesn't have to be a game, it just has to be creative and/or cool. I will pick what I think is the coolest item.

I plan to pick a lucky winner for Pick Me #2 on St. Patrick's Day, Tuesday, March 17th!

Here's what you'll win if I pick you:

I am offering a choice betweeen two games and, in addition, two custom, fully-lined tile-drawing bags, made by me.

Either Puerto Rico with the out-of-print Puerto Rico: Expansion I – New Buildings included, both brand new, punched but unplayed:

Or Biblios, played once, in excellent condition and complete. Out of print, hard to find and very much desired, this is one of the first 50 copies of the game which comes in a box, not the VHS case of the later version.

In addition to one of these two games, you will also win a "Ra" bag:

Bag shown alone and "in action". I'm giving away the new one shown in the left photo.

And I will make a bag of the winner's choice (other than "Ra").

Good luck and thanks for participating!

----------------------------

It’s time to pick a winner! The people have chosen...

A tie!!! Oh no! I’m going to have to play Solomon here, and pick a winner between two very different and very deserving entries: the incredibly creative craftings of Rick Johnston’s (hornss) fimo clay pawns, and Denise’s (Sungarden3) gift certificate plus game journal. What a tough choice indeed! I’m going to have to flip a coin!

I assigned Denise the Queen face on my lucky Canadian Twoonie, and Rick the polar bear face, and flipped... And it’s Queen’s Choice!

Congratulations to our second Pick Me winner -- first time chain entrant Denise (Sungarden3)!

Honorable mentions to: Rick Johnston’s (hornss) gorgeous fimo clay pawns, JonnyRotten’s (jgilmour) very detailed, beautiful dioramas, and Ben Lott’s (Blott) really original, and very tempting, new game plus old game offering. You all made it very hard to choose, and that’s a good thing!

Hopefully, we'll continue to see lots more cool offers as the Pick Me Chain continues. The floor is now yours, Denise!

Mystery Box

WARNING:
This is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone winning this chain will get a PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOX (though it has become the LARGE FLAT RATE BOX lately) stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff.

RULES:
1. The giver must put more than one game into the box.

2. The giver is also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box.

3. GM me with your guess as to what game I am hinting at. If you are correct, you will receive one extra entry in the drawing.

4. If you win, you are expected to post the contents of your box in the following geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

The Hint:
If you've ever wanted to save the townsfolk with your high school sweetheart or burn 'em out with the farmer's daughter, this is your game.

The Deadline:
I will randomly choose a winner on the morning of Saturday March 21st.

Good Luck!

Good Morning! It's time to determine the winner. My clue was rather easy, so most participants (not all!) get a bonus chance to win the mystery box. I'll be using random.org to determine the winner by choosing a number between 1-24

1.atimrogers
2. signjc and 15
3. Timotheus and 16
4. SikkRikk and 17
5. Angry Duck and 18
6. FierceFishSJS and 19
7. Gridiron God and 20
8. Artfuldodge
9. PeterLoop
10.Jgilmour and 21
11.Sungarden3 and 22
12.Subhan
13.hugz313 and 23
14.Eklecman and 24

and the electronically random result is........
#7!
Congratulations Gridiron God. Enjoy the mystery box :-)
BTW, I clicked the 'again' button at random.org just to see who got 'second' place and the # was 24. So close Eklecman! Better luck next time everyone. Also, check the mystery box contents page soon for the contents of the mystery box i received from spacemonster.
Thanks for playing!

GROUCH CHAIN yukangryrobot

OK, well its Friday, and I'm REALLY grouchy soblueyukangry because I stayed up late last night trying to download last week's episode of Battlestar Galactica so I would be caught up for tonight's 1st episode of the big 3 episode series finale. All I have to say is Frakking ITunes Sux!! angryyukangry

Anyway, we are reviving the Grouch Thread because the last time I offered these items the winner never responded. As I recall, we had a pretty good response, so let's try it again.

For offer are a copy of Nottingham NISB + Bang!, which is used but complete. Here is the description from the first time around with all the glitter and fun links, cuz I'm too grumpy to do it again:

Sorry I haven't posted something up here sooner, it's been crazy busy at work (which is enough to make me a grouch, so this chain is fitting).

Up for offering is a copy of Nottingham, a nice game from Uberplay. This game is NIS (one of the good things I actually got from Tanga) and comes from a smoke free home. I'll also throw in a copy of the base game for Bang
- that game has been played, but is in good condition + again, smoke + odor free.

Free shipping in North America, I'll cover the first $8 US anywhere else in the world.

I'll let this run for a week, I'll have my 4 year old roll some dice next Friday the 20th at 7 pm EDT.

Now enter the frakkin contest, and then go away!

Pick Me

This is item number: THREE in the Pick Me chain.

People can help me decide what's coolest by thumbing the item they like the most. However, I am free to ignore public opinion.

If I pick you, you list your item, and give people some time to leave comments, then you pick what you think is the coolest item from the comments left for your entry in the chain.

I plan to pick a lucky winner for Pick Me #3 on Friday, March 27th!

Here's what you'll win if I pick you:

d10-1 A game of your choice from CoolStuffInc.com: I will use the existing credit I have there (I sold them some cards) to purchase a game of the winner’s choosing, up to the value of the credit ($25.00).

d10-2 I will also include a game journal from Genimuse Spielstuff like the one you see below (the winner may choose a different design, if preferred - see website for interior and cover options).

d10-3 To throw another option into the mix -- should the winner have interest in any of the four games I have available for trade, he/she may select one of those instead of the game journal. I will allow other mixing/matching as well. For example, if a game journal (or an item from my trade list) is not desired, I will add an additional $13.00 to the CoolStuffInc.com order.

Good luck and thanks for participating!

----------------------------

The day to pick a winner has arrived...

...and Wow! I am constantly amazed and humbled by the level of creativity and overall generosity of BGGers -- these are truly tempting offers all! Since I can only pick one though, I’ve decided to bow to the will of the people and announce that our third Pick Me winner is:

gdapkus -- for his wonderful custom Dominion wood chip set. Congratulations!

I hardly know where to begin for honorable mentions -- the beautiful woodworking of Futza and DasViktor, the wonderful artistry of hornss’s Pandemic fimo characters and jgilmour’s dioramas, and some seriously generous game offerings!

Everyone has truly embodied the spirit of this chain and I look forward to seeing even more cool items as it continues. Take it away gdapkus!

Let's Make A Deal!

Have you ever watched Let's Make A Deal? Well, there's a new chain and it goes like this:

You have a choice and all three are games.

You can either choose
Curtain #1 which is:
Blokus 3D

Educational Insights edition. New in Shrink.

** OR **
You can choose Curtain #2:

Hint: Two racing games. Only a driving ace will attain glory in these two games.

** OR **
You can choose Curtain #3:

Hint: Two party games. For those who would rather have a drawn out game.

RULES: You do not need to email me with which one you want. Just say
"I'm in" and which curtain you want, #1, #2 or #3.
I am going to leave this open to everyone, not just the US. No other hints, nothing else to do but win a game and then post one like this or something else a bit more creative. All of the opportunities, the curtains, need to be a game if you do the same type of thing.
All three curtains in this one ARE games.
Edit: It has been suggested to me to include further terms. If you win this chain, please either keep the chain going with at least 2 games and a consolation prize or all three of them games. If you'd like to change the terms and do something else, please make sure there is at least one game and a wild card. This way we can play awhile longer.

I'll let this run until Wednesday, March 25th, 8:00pm EST. When it's over and a winner is announced, I'll also reveal what the other two games are. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it!

*** EDIT ***
Wednesday already. Alright, we've got two entries, so I'll just flip a coin. Heads = Eklecman, Tails = Fierce_FishSJS....

And the winner is....

Would You Rather...? and Luck of the Draw

And now, what's behind Curtain #2??

A geekmail is on the way!

*** EDIT #2 ***
I have just been informed by by Eklecman that he will be unable to accept this prize and continue the chain.

HOTTIE or NOTTIE NSIB Chain

Now, here are the new standardized rules, blah, blah, blah:

Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game

************************************************************************
