Discussion Thread is Here!

The original Chain of Generosity is here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/23326/ This list is a continuation.

The Chain has been, and continues to be, an enormous success. Thank you to all the people who've kept it going for over two years!

Boardgamegeek is a wonderful place. The friendly, helpful, generous users here make this one of the best online communities. I want to contribute to that spirit, so I have created the BGG Chain of Generosity.

Here's how the BGG Chain of Generosity (The Chain) works:

Step 1: I will seed the list with a giveaway game. Anyone who wants that game can leave a comment to that effect. After 2 days (on Friday) I will randomly choose (using the random integer generator at random.org) a recipient for the game, and geekmail them to set up shipping to their house.

Step 2: The recipient of the game will then choose a game from their collection (probably from their trade list) and post it as an item here for more people (or maybe the same people) to comment on and enter. After about 2 days (this can vary) they will do a drawing, and a that person will win the game.

Step 3: The new recipient repeats step 2.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

RULES:

1. You must comment to the item in question indicating you wish to be in the drawing to recieve it in order to be eligible to win.

2. If you win one, you MUST post a game of your own to give away in this fashion. If you don't like that idea, don't play.

3. In the unlikely event that no offers are made on your game by 48 hours after posting, try a different game in its place.

4. If you wish to start a second (or third, or fourth) chain, post an item to the geeklist and put "SEED" in bold in the description. For those later in the chain, identify which chain your game belongs to.

5. Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates in his entry that the recipient will and under what grounds (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where recipient pays shipping agree to do so.

Pretty simple rules, eh?

Other Considerations:

The game you post should be one that most of the BGG community might want to have. Ideally, one on your trade list. The dual-purpose of this list is to spread goodwill and give unliked games a good home.

You can win multiple times. Just keep in mind each time you win a game you'll be giving another one away.

With the Chain's 2-year anniversary approaching in July, I thought it was high time I added chain myself. Although I started this whole mess, I've only been responsible for one of our nearly TWENTY chains so far: The Original Chain.

So, for my new chain, I thought I'd put the Generosity back in the Chain of Generosity. Presenting:

The "Share the Love" Chain

Rules for the Share the Love Chain:

1. The person posting a Share the Love chain item must offer 2 packages. Each package must contain at least one game, but may contain multiple games or a game and other items.

2. One package is pre-designated the "Chain" Item. The second package is the "Giveaway" item. When the winner is drawn, 2 drawings are made.

The first drawing is the entrant who gets the "Chain" package, and will post the next item in the chain. The second drawing entrant gets the "Giveaway" package. The winner of the Giveaway package does not post a chain item: They simply get their giveaway package for free!

3. All entrants have an equal chance of being selected for either item. An entrant may be asked only to be drawn for the Chain item, but may not ask to be entered only for the "Giveaway" package.

4. No entrant may win both the Chain and Giveaway package, unless they are the only entrant.

5. Entrants must indicate their interest by commenting "I'm in" or similar. Thumbs do NOT count as valid entries.

6. If the Share the Love chain makes it back around to me, I have the option of closing it off for good.

7. Because microbadges are only awarded to users who have given a game away, winners of "Giveaway" packages will not recieve microbadges (though if you already have one, I won't take it away )

Item ONE of the Share the Love chain:

Chain Item: Ticket to Ride

Giveaway Item: Dead Man's Treasure

Drawing occurs Tuesday, 4/28/2009.

GROUCH CHAIN

Well, it's hard to be grouchy about winning two chains in one day, but that does mean that I have to now give away TWO games! GRRRRR?

In any case, this offering with be the fun but never-hits-the-table Buy Low, Sell High, by the good Dr. Knizia. Easy to be grouchy about the subject matter, that's for sure. I played it once when I bought it a year ago; it's in wonderful condition.

The grouch chain has no rules or limitations as far as I know. Just leave a comment if you're interested. I will pick a winner one week from today, at approximately noon on Tuesday, April 28. A lack of interest will prompt me to post either an additional game, or a completely new one, and I will move the draw date accordingly. We will see...

HOT or NOT?

It's time for another of Isaiah's patented Tanga Grab Bags!

The Grab Bag consists of the following THREE games, absolutely new and in original shrink wrap:

- Battle of the Bands: Encore Edition
- Battle of the Bands: Backstage Pass
- Saga

I got extra copies of these games when they were on Tanga, hoping to sell them for a slight profit. That hasn't happened, so now you can have them for free! I enjoy all of these games -- BotB in particular is a great girlfriend game that travels very well to restaurants and the like.

Remember, if you're interested, you have to put in your thumbs! As soon as I get six thumbs, I will pick a winner and ship! If there's little or no interest I will sweeten the pot...

Edit #1: One thumb in 48 business hours means that I have to sweeten the pot. So I'm offering a selection of DVDs. All are in great condition; starred items are in shrinkwrap.

SELECT THREE:
OT: Our Town*
Pirates of the Caribbean 1 (2 Disk Collector's Edition)
Edward Scissorhands (10th Anniversary Edition)
Rain Man (Special Edition)
Moulin Rouge (Single Disk Edition)
Spider-Man 1 (Widescreen 2-Disk Special Edition)*

Edit #2 (final): Paying it forward and adding the Uberplay copy of Relationship Tightrope from the last entry in the chain, as I already have one myself. So that's four games plus three DVDs of your choice!

According to the rules, this is the final addition. So if you've been holding out and waiting to see the final entry before throwing your thumb in, now's the time to jump (or not). New ending time is Tuesday evening at 8pm EST.

Good luck!

The Origins of Hot or Not http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/24780/item/744765#item...

Rules:

1. The first item offered must be a game that is still in shrink, or at the very most, opened, and sparsely played (if at all) and in "like new" condition.

2. The game offered has 48 business hours to get at least 6 thumbs. If it does not get 6 thumbs then the person who offered the game must add something to the mix. If you are forced to add something to sweeten the pot, it does not have to be another game, it can be anything - GeekGold, dice, a DVD, anything at all. This must be done every 24 business hours until you get 6 thumbs OR 3 items are offered.

3. If the first game offered should get 6 thumbs before 48 business hours have gone by, the person offering the game can close their offer and draw at that time. This is to prevent people from holding out for sweeteners and giving the offer a sense of urgency. If you wait too long, you might miss out!

4. The Chain will continue until UndeadViking wins another game, and wants to end the chain. This means it will be a "closed chain" of generosity. However, UndeadViking has several games he plans on offering, so he hopes to keep this going for some time, as long as interest continues.

5. Remember, if you want to throw your name into the hat, you have to give the geeklist entry a thumbs up. Responses of "I'm in!" and the like will NOT put you in the running for the game.

This copy of Sorry! Sliders is opened but played only a couple of times and is in perfect condition.

LET'S MAKE A DEAL !!!

Sorry for the delay, but here are the next offerings for this chain and I have decided to up the ante for being late. I will give everyone five choices, but don't bother checking my game collection cause they're not there. Many of the games offered are rated above 7.0 and ranked in the top 300. Let's have some fun !!!

Have you ever watched Let's Make A Deal? Well, that's what this chain is all about.

You have a choice of five curtains. The first four are games and the fifth is the wildcard.

CURTAIN #1 - Hint: Three card games that will fit any crowd. (NEW)

****************************** OR ******************************

CURTAIN #2 - Hint: Build your territory, but beware of opponents' raids. (NEW)

****************************** OR ******************************

CURTAIN #3 - Hint: A showdown of grand proportions. (NEW)

****************************** OR ******************************

CURTAIN #4 - Hint: Fast and furious battle in space (NEW)

****************************** OR ******************************

CURTAIN #5 - Hint: Small collection of dvds, cds, and video games. (NEW)

RULES

You do not need to email me with which one you want. Just say: "I'm in" and which curtain you want, #1, #2, #3, #4 or #5.

No other hints, nothing else to do but win something and then post one like this or something else a bit more creative. All of the opportunities, the curtains, need to be a game if you do the same type of thing.

Edit: It has been suggested to me to include further terms. If you win this chain, please either keep the chain going with at least 2 games and a consolation prize or all of them games. If you'd like to change the terms and do something else, please make sure there is at least one game and a wild card. This way we can play a while longer.

I'll let this run until 11:00pm this Saturday 4/25. Sorry for the short deadline, but I'll be out of town for three weeks beginning next Monday.

When it's over and a winner is announced, I'll also reveal what's behind the other curtains. Good luck to all !!!

The name taken out of my Carcassonne bag says it's JonnyRotten (jgilmour).

The Abstract Chain

Thanks to Peter for the game and for starting this new chain. Let's see if we can keep it alive. So join in to keep this from simply becoming an elaborate trade between two people who live 20 minutes from each other.

Blokus Duo - Missing the 1 square purple tile. I've heard Educational Insights is good about replacing pieces. But I haven't put it to the test yet.

----- -----

1. The first item offered must be an "abstract game" (Category =Abstract Strategy on BGG).
2. No Public Domain Abstacts allowed (Chess, Checkers..etc)
3. The game must be complete and in good playable shape.
4. The Chain Contiunes until I win back a game.

Pick Me

This is item number: EIGHT in the Pick Me chain.

Here's how the "Pick Me" chain works: I put up an item and if you'd like to get it you have to get me to pick you. You do this by leaving a comment for the item, describing the item(s) you're willing to offer up as next in the chain. It doesn't have to be a game, it just has to be creative and/or cool. I will pick what I think is the coolest item. People can help me decide what's coolest by thumbing the item they like the most. However, I am free to ignore public opinion.

If I pick you, you list your item, and give people some time to leave comments, then you pick what you think is the coolest item from the comments left for your entry in the chain.

This process is repeated at 10 times. The 10th item listed is the FINAL item in the chain. The rules for winning the 10th item are special. Leave a comment that is thoughtful, inspiring, witty, or strange indicating why you should get the 10th item. The public will vote on who should get the 10th with their thumbs. Do NOT thumb your own comment. You can only thumb 1 comment. You can change your vote up to the deadline. The person who is listing the 10th item decides any ties.

My offer is the total personalization package:

1) I will search the winner's wishlist and select a game just for them to order and have shipped direct to them.

2) I will personalize one of my TGIF polls just for them (using their favorite types of games or something along those lines.)

3) I will give the user 15geekgold so that they can purchase a new microbadge or save up for an avatar or geekbadge.

Note: I will pick when I feel like it meeple (But no later than May 8th.)

Edit: Man, there's a whole lot to love in those entries and I'm afraid my offer isn't good enough to live up to some of these subsequent offers. After a lot of careful deliberation and weighing out of the merits of each offer, I just can't get past the generous option from UndeadViking. So I think I'll declare him the winner.

Share the Love(in') Chain!

Since me and Erik "Shared the Lovin'" I'm bind to share some of it with You guys
i hope You don't mind some manly love...

Any-way...Here are the rules!

--------------

But I wouldn't say no to some extra thumbs

And here are the sad games that will soon leave me and go somewhere far-far away kingdom...

Item TWO in the Lovin' chain...

The Chain item:

Warcraft: The Boardgame

And also expansion for this one because without the main game I have nothing to do with it...

They come in one box (I hope it's not a problem) and are supplied with my own genius (well, almost!) storage solution. Here it is... It took quite a effort to make them and I'm rather fond of them.

(Don't mind the bottle)

The box is a bit worn out and one corner was crushed by the transportation company before I got it but I've managed to fix it with transparent tape. The storage boxes are made of the only material that I had last year - beer boxes. That was before I became a father...

The sidekick (or giveaway item):

Turbo Taxi

I also add something special in this sidekick to balance the offerings. Something to do with my trade...

Feeling lucky?

As it's gonna be a rather tough weekend for me (something to do with a lot of alcohol) so I'm gonna pick the lucky winner somewhere in the beginning of the next week.

New Geek Chain Item

Cannes: Stars, Scripts and Screens by Splotter. New in shrink.

Drawing will be in about a week.

[edit 5/3] Well, Peter, it looks like you are the only Splotter fan. I haven't played this, but my GeekBuddies rated it over '7'. Surprised there is so little interest. This should make the random drawing pretty simple.

[edit 5/7] Well, it's been a week, so I'll fire up the random number generator and see who wins this game. Do you feel the tension?

Well! It looks like the winner is PETER LOOP!

I was surprised there was so little interest in this game. It's not a bad game and it's new, in shrink.

Peter, I'll be getting this in the mail to you soon.

GROUCH CHAIN

The Grouch Chain is back again with a brand new copy of Hispaniola!
Thanks to Isaiah Tanenbaum that I won two chains concurrently.

This is my very 1st Chain of Generosity offering so kindly pardon me if I make any mistake.

As most geeks who participate in the Chain of Generosity reside in the USA, I have decided to order the game directly from one of the online retailer. Postage in USA will be borne by me. Will also pay the first USD 10 for international postage if the winner is from other country.

Note - if this game happens to be out of stock at the time of ordering, I will be glad to replace with any game of similar value.

Rules:
The Grouch Chain has no rules or limitations as far as I know. Just leave a comment if you're interested. I will randomly select a geek on Friday 8th May 09.

Remember, if you want to throw your name into the hat, you have to give this geeklist entry a Thumb Up. Responses of "I'm in!" and the likes will NOT put you in the running for the game.

So act fast......and the next lucky geek could be YOU!

HOT or NOT?

Thanks to Isaiah Tanenbaum that I won two chains concurrently.

This is my 2nd Chain of Generosity offering so kindly pardon me if I make any mistake.

As most geeks who participate in the Chain of Generosity reside in the USA, I have decided to order the game directly from one of the online retailer so that it will reach you guys faster. Postage in USA will be borne by me. Will also pay the first USD 10 for international postage if the winner is from other country.

The HOT or NOT Chain is back again with -

A copy of Ming Dynasty German Edition

Note - if any game happens to be out of stock at the time of ordering, I will be glad to replace with another game of similar value.

Remember, if you're interested, you have to put in your thumbs! As soon as I get six thumbs, I will pick a winner and a geekmail will be on its way! If there's lack of interest I will either sweeten the pot or change to a new game offering...

Hey! it's time for the...

Cheap Chain!!!

OK - so it doesn't come much cheaper than this, for me at least.

I am offering up Zombies!!! (1st edition) since I own a copy of second edition and see no need for this one.

Also - I will offer up my 1st edition copies of...

I will be completely honest, and mention that the base game is missing some of the "shotgun heroes" that you use as the player markers, but the giant handful of a gajillion zombies is still contained in the box. Resourceful gamers should be able to find some suitable, if not better, representations for their players instead.

I will let this run for a week or so before I let Rilyn draw a name out a hat.

ARRRHH!!!! BRAINZ!!!!

Well I dont think anyone else is interested in this one, so I will just declare Peter the winner so we can get some fresh blood moving in here.

Congrats Pete! GM sent!

Original Chain

Sorry about the hold up. I've been unwell as of late and it's caused me to fall behind getting stuff done.

That said, I'm offering a duo of games.

The first is Beowulf: The Movie Board Game

Mint in Shrink
This is a great game, based on the Knizia game Kingdoms.

The second is The Yeti Slalom

This one's only been played a few times.
A light, amusing little racing game.

I will pick someone using Random.org on Sunday, May 17th.

EDIT: Well, looks like my first offer has been rather underwhelming, so I'm going to add a copy of Coloretto
. This copy is still in shrink.

I know I had offered OGRE/GEV as a third game, but have taken it down and changed it to Coloretto so I can ship OGRE to a deserving soldier. Again, I apologize for the change.

Alright...After forgetting to roll before bed, I woke up this morning and got it done. Assigning each "IN" person the numbers:

1) StatSig
2) noddingoff
3) matrixrenegade

Random.org has determined that the lucky winner is 3, matrixrenegade!

Sending you a Geekmail now to get address. Thanks for playing all!

Pick Me

First off, let me thank Ben for picking my offering!

This is item number: NINE in the Pick Me chain.

For my offering, as you probably already know, I am offering up a quasi mystery box of Geekitude. You will know what at least one of the games you are getting, the rest of the box will be a grab bag. Here is my original offer...

*PLEASE see important edit pertaining to my copy of Agricola below*

Well here is my offer that may be edited later to attempt to outshine the others that will come.

I will once again offer up some homemade hippy jewelry that will be designed for the next winner personally and made by yours truly. Some samples are here but I can pretty much make anything you like.

Also, since I think you should get a game, I will be offering up an IN SHRINK, never played, copy of -

This is the first printing which will INCLUDE the Z-Man deck.

*important edit* After getting a couple of GM's, I have this addendum. Due to the inherent worth of this game as far as trading or Ebaying goes, I will be preferential to entrants belonging to people that do not own a copy of Agricola already. I would much rather this game go to someone who will crack it open and give it the love it deserves after being neglected by me instead of going to someone who will immediatly turn around and put it up for sale/trade. If this makes some of you want to take back your thumbs, or for Ben to pick someone else's offer, I completely understand.

If that weren't enough, I will also include a bag of unopened animeeples.

Finally, I will dig around my collection and find a small handful of geeky items to throw into the box that I will be sending to the lucky winner. This will include at least TWO MORE GAMES that don't get played out of my collection. Think of it as a semi-mystery box, as you will know about half of what you are getting. Also, these are not going to be crappy little card games that you get in Tanga Trash (though I might throw some of those in too). These will be honest to goodness decent games that are highly regarded by the community.

Good luck to all the entrants!

**Edit** - If Agricola isn't your thing, you will be able to choose ONE of the following games instead:

In Shrink

In Shrink

Played once - box has dented corner but otherwise perfect condition

In Shrink

You will still get the mystery box of course. Note: none of these games will be in the mystery box if you choose Agricola...or will they?

*edit* make sure you look at my important edit pertaining to my copy of Agricola

There you go - you get a game of your choice, some hippy jewelry, and some other geeky stuff. When you post your entry, feel free to specify which game you want, or if you want to leave me in the dark, that's fine too.

I will let this run a week or so before I pick. Notice - I will be asking my 22 month old daughter Rilyn's opinion about the offers as well, not that she really cares about anything unless it has cookies, juice, or fruit snacks involved.

Good luck to everyone who enters - make sure you knock my socks off.

**EDIT**

Well I guess it is time to pick a winner - and I want everyone to know this was not easy in the slightest. I appreciate all of your offers, but I finally had to make a choice, and I chose:

The Abstract Chain

This chain is for folks that enjoy giving abstract games to others.
Previous offers include:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/24780/item/916228#item...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/24780/item/923107#item...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/24780/item/928390#item...

Like the original Generosity Chain, this chain has some fairly simple rules:

Step 1: The originator of the this chain (and each subsequent winner) offers to give away a game that is officially categorized as an "Abstract Strategy" game (you can use the BGG search engine to find games that meet that criteria) and posts the date (typically a couple days or so) that the drawing will be held in the item description. (Sweeteners may also be added if desired). No Public Domain Abstacts allowed (Chess, Checkers..etc) and the game must be complete and in good playable shape.

Step 2A: Anybody that would like to receive the offered game (for free) adds a comment to the Geeklist item offered indicating a desire to receive the game. Pithy text may be added to the comment entry but is not required. You may also click the thumbs up button on the offered item if you think it is worthy and you are into the whole thumbing thing (but this is also not required).
Step 2B: If nobody expresses an interest in the item offered by the established deadline, the offerer should start over with Step 1 using a different game.

Step 3: On the date established, the current offerer will choose a winner of the offered item using a random picking process.

Step 4: The name of the winner is posted at the bottom of the description of the offer, the offerer (now called the sender) also sends a GeekMail to the winner notifying him, and initiates a one-sided Trade Offer using the BGG trade system.

Step 5: The sender ships the game to the winner.

Step 6. The winner becomes the new offerer and steps 1-6 are repeated.
Note: This means that anybody that wins must now give away a game of their own. If you don't like that idea, please don't play.
Special Note on Shipping: Sender pays shipping, unless he indicates upfront in his offer that the recipient will be required to pay and under what terms (International shipping, etc). Anyone signing up to receive an item where the description states that the recipient pays shipping is agreeing to do so by adding a comment.

If you have a question about the eligibility of a specific game or other specific question, the originator of the chain,

Pick any one of the following games:

Camden

Cover Up

DaVinci's Challenge Card Game

Hive

Miscellaneous Game Accessory One "stash" of Icehouse Pyramids (my choice of color)

Mastermind

Octi

Outwit

Quads

The Very Clever Pipe Game

Tiles (PnP)

Blokus Duo

Tri-Ominos

Per the rules, all of the potential offers are complete and in good playable shape. However, many of them have box dings and might show some wear. Clearly, these are not investor grade condition.

This offer will have a small variation to the standard Abstract Chain rules. If you would like to receive one of the games being offered, then when you post your comment expressing your interest, you MUST specify your top choice from the list of games offered.

I will cover the complete cost to ship to USA addresses and will cover the first $10 to ship to non-USA addresses from zip 50325. Payment (via Western Union wire, Amazon GC, or Paypal (but not a creditcard-funded Paypal payment) for any shipping charge due must be received prior to the item being shipped.

I will pick a winner the evening of 5/16. Good luck and have fun.

1. (gilby123)
2. (Howitzer_120mm)
3. (grison)
4. (namnad510) [technically did not comply with the rules, but I included him in the drawing anyway]

Its time for the crazy demon idol to get passed along to someone else, along with a box full of goodies via the MYSTERY BOX CHAIN.

WARNING:
This is for residents of U.S. only. Why? Because everyone winning this chain will get a PRIORITY MAIL FLAT RATE BOX (though it has become the LARGE FLAT RATE BOX lately) stuffed full of games and/or gaming accessories and/or other stuff.

RULES:
1. The giver must put more than one game into the box.

2. The giver is also required to give one hint concerning one game in the box.

3. GM me with your guess as to what game I am hinting at. If you are correct, you will receive one extra entry in the drawing.

4. If you win, you are expected to post the contents of your box in the following geeklist: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34124

The Hint:
A classic card game, that is loved by some and hated by others.

I have called upon the mystical god of randomness and he has handed me the name for the winner of the Mystery box. The name that has appeared to me is:
matrixrenegade

LET'S MAKE A DEAL !!!

Sorry it took so long to get this up here, work has taken over my life, but now its time for LETS MAKE A DEAL!!!

Have you ever watched Let's Make A Deal? Well, that's what this chain is all about.

You have a choice of three curtains. The first will be revealed, the other two will be mystery prizes.

The revealed prize is going to be cold hard cash... errr.. rather a gift card at any online vendor of your choice, as long as they have the option to deliver the gift card electronically

Then we have Curtain Number 1

A game of tile placement and territory building

Next we have Curtain Number 2

A part of one of the classic series that helped lead to the boom in board games.

Then finally behind Curtain Number 3!

A Newer Collectible card game with some interesting deck building mechanics. You will recieve enough for several players or a variety of decks.

RULES

You do not need to email me with which one you want. Just say: "I'm in" and which curtain you want, #1, #2, #3, or the revealed prize. Some are worth more, some are worth less, all are awesome things you will get one way or the other if you are the winner of this chain!

I have called upon the mystical god of randomness and he has handed me the name for the winner of the Let's make a deal chain. The name that has appeared to me is:
Lil Red Head, who chose door #2 which is a copy of Carcassonne. Hope it is well enjoyed!
Geekmail is on the way! Congratulations, and sorry again to everyone for the wait.

Share the Love(in') Chain!

Ove Hillep has shared the love with me, so its time for me to share it with one of you lucky geeks!

Any-way...Here are the rules!

--------------

But I wouldn't say no to some extra thumbs

And here are the items!

Item THREE in the "Share the Lovin'" chain...

The Chain item:

A mystery box stuffed with gifts and games especially for you! I will stalk around BGG and stuff a box with things I feel that you like like. There will be at LEAST 1 new game in there. THe rest of the box will have to remain a mystery.

The sidekick (or giveaway item):

A bunch of unopened booster packs for Epic TCG, enough for several players and a combination of decks.

Feeling lucky?

I have called upon the mystical god of randomness and he has handed me the name for the winners of the Share the love chain. The names that have appeared to me are:
The main item winner is - almo1705
The giveaway winner is - shelflife3000

Cheap Chain!!!

Thanks to UndeadViking for Cheap (or Cheep) of the dead

Now I offer up a Cheap Maze/Tile game - 4th Corner
A designed and published by BGG member By Mark Salzwedel

This is an interesting tile laying maze game - and it is a design by one of our own - a significant step up from DiY

Claims to be the only board game to receive the Top Toy 2008 award from Toy Directory Monthly!

Plays 2-8 in 20 minutes

I'll pick in about a week.
