When my daughter was 13 I don't think she would have liked Vegas Showdown, but now that she's 17 she loves it. I bought this when it was on sale to be a Christmas gift for family members. She also really likes Hollywood Blockbuster and she used to carry No Thanks around in her purse to play with friends at school.
When I was in school, they would have confiscated the cards as "gambling paraphernalia." When we explained why Magic: The Gathering wasn't gambling, they were confiscated for occult references.
This is a great game if you like Stratego. There's a strong element of bluffing involved. I like to pair Sam up with someone besides Frodo, if I think I can get away with it.
This is to me far better than Stratego simply because it involves far less bluffing and more strategy, but the bluffing is still so important. Also the tiny board gives such an intense and claustrophobic feel that makes you always pressed and feeling threatened. One of my top 2-players.
You might also consider Ave Caesar. It's not long, but if you & your friends like a racing game all about getting in each other's way, I think you'd like this.

I agree--although I've only experienced Ave Caesar as Ausgebremst. But I think that 13-year-olds wouldn't mind the shortcomings (as I see them) of Formula De (starting position having a huge effect on outcome, fiddliness). When my eldest was that age, he also loved Carabande (Pitch Car) and that Racing Game in a Tube (DMS?). I think those 'active' games appeal well to teens.
SPEED CIRCUIT by Avalon-Hill was also an excellent race game, as was it's very old predecessor, LE MANS. I enjoyed many races with both those games. WINNER'S CIRCLE is a fun horse racing game where you secretly bet on three horses, two of which are actual bets and the third is a fake bet (to fake out your competitors). Then you try to run the race so that the horses you bet on will win. Good fun.

It was 4 bets when i played winner's circle: 1 double, 2 singles and a bluff bet.
Ticket to Ride: Marklin edition adds a fun extra -- zooming around your tracks picking up passengers for bonus points. The first person to hit stations gets more points.
You might like THE DOWNFALL OF POMPEII. Very easy to learn and fun to play. The first half of the game you move your people pieces into the city of Pompeii, then when the volcano hits, for the second half of the game you try to move as many people out of the city without getting hit by lava from the other players. Of course, you can hit them with lava.
Give STRATEGO a try. Interesting two player game trying to capture the other player's flag on a checkertype board with pieces of varying military ranks and powers that have hidden strength until moved into contact with each other.

We have a copy of Star Wars Stratego around so it's pretty cool having extra chracter powers for us. Cool list and we were just introduced to Nexus Ops so I'll forward this to my twelve-year old son.
I honestly can't understand what is so special when a 13 year old kid writes a Geeklist.
What is special about it to me is that Riley, and you, (and Eric, the Zildjian Ninja) are participating in this community. As far as I know, there are not very many posts done by folks your age. Also, people are responding and making recommendations. People of a wide variety of ages are engaged with one another and communicating. That's special to me.

ok, show us what you got! If you're amused by something you've written, chances are someone here will be amused by it too. You've told us what you don't think has value. Give us something you think does have value. Write a review, or a session report, or make a geeklist. It's all good!

Nor can I see this as a useful list. I just don't think it is, if you wonder if a game is suitable for a 13 year old, you have to think about the person in question, what is he intrested in, what kind of attention spam he has, does he learn the rules easily? And so on... You cant make a list of games that suit 20 year old people, how about for 60 years old? Naturally you CAN make list for games that suit small children, I just dont think it works after you hit 10-12 years of age.
You make some very good points. In the next couple of months, I will be deciding what to buy for my nieces and nephews for xmas, and I will look at this list. You are right about the age thing, though. I cannot blindly buy games from this list because my nephew is the same age. But, I'm 39 and I forget what it was like to be 13 or 14. I will use it along with other lists and recommendations here. Game recommendations are difficult to do, and I'll use whatever information I have to help me.
So, help me out with those reviews and geeklists. I'll need something by the end of November so I have time to order and ship my gifts.
The key thing is that you are enjoying games and interacting with people face to face, and not across a computer network. I believe the best aspect of gaming is the socialization, although playing games like Nexus Ops and Winner's Circle is a lot more rewarding than playing Sorry or Go Fish.
Either way, I am just happy that I have successfully added another gamer to my circle. Spiel On!

Oh, and I never said this list isn't valueable, all I said was that I didn't find it particulary useful. Very different things.
I think you're going to fit in just fine here.
