Finnish Players' Picks 2007

Another year, another round of voting. The Finnish Players' Picks highlights the best games of the year. Every game is eligible, even the old ones, as long as people vote for games they have actually played during the year. Each voter gets seven votes and must vote for at least five games. 36 votes. After two years on spot two, Puerto Rico is back on the top.

29 votes. Best score for Power Grid so far. The game has enjoyed steady popularity for four years now: it's safe to say Finnish gamers love the game.

29 votes. More than doubled the votes from last year. The Finnish edition won the Finnish Game of the Year award recently. Well done, but I think Thurn und Taxis will drop a bit next year.

Board Game: Caylus

26 votes. Last year's number one couldn't hold the throne. While people like the game, it doesn't have the staying power of Puerto Rico - new games have come to take over.

Board Game: Imperial

19 votes. Best new game on the list. Finnish gamers like Imperial a lot, it's been talked about quite a bit on the Finnish Board Game Society forums.

18 votes. Carcassonne was the winner few years ago, but has lost votes a lot. The expansions have eaten some, and people are moving on to new games. Also, I think we've had more serious gamers and less casual gamers voting for the last two years.

Board Game: Samurai

18 votes. The Finnish edition has kept Samurai floating, the game has enjoyed steady popularity for three years now.

17 votes. I'm rather surprised Alhambra got a bit of a boost in the voting. I suppose the good availability and the Game of the Year award it got two years ago still help it.

17 votes. The biggest surprise! Princes of Florence has received some votes each year, but this year it got a huge boost. The last time the game was this popular was four years ago. I wonder why...

16 votes. Another old favourite with a new boost - the game was on a downward slope, but not anymore.

14 votes. Catan is slowly going down. It did get a small nudge up from last year, but I think the trend is still going down. Still, I expect the game to hold some steady popularity.

14 votes. Going down, but this one is dragged down by its children: all Ticket to Ride expansions and spinoffs got a total of 29 votes.

13 votes. A bit of a sleeper, not talked about a lot, but has a nice, steady support from voters.

Board Game: Shogun

13 votes. Wallenstein has enjoyed very steady popularity, but now Shogun came and with support from Wallenstein fans, collected a rather nice number of votes. It'll be interesting to see if Wallenstein will disappear (it got six votes this year; before it had a steady 10-vote support).

12 votes. A classic, certainly not hindered by a Finnish edition.

10 votes. Another new game on the list. I expect Yspahan to do fairly well next year as well.

9 votes. Surprisingly few votes. Perhaps the game is too expensive or just too new? It hasn't been available all the time, either. I'd say next year it'll get more votes.

9 votes. Railroad Tycoon keeps on trucking, with the same number of votes as last year.

8 votes. This one seems to be on rise, helped by the Finnish edition.
