It's that time of year again when the editors at GAMES Magazine put together their list of the 100 best games of the year! I've collected the games here, in a similar format to Drew's lists from previous years.

Enjoy!

Interesting choice for game of the year. Though goverened by more luck than I care for, this does seem a lot more of a "gamers game" than Games typically picks.

I commented on this when Pillars won the DSP, but I will say it again. It is a good game. I enjoy playing it. I am not convinced that it is the best game released in the time-frame.

This being said, I'm not upset with Pillars of the Earth winning awards - The Games 100 Game of the Year will hopefully force Mayfair's hand on the expansions (that and the recent publication of a sequel to the novel that inspired the game should help sales, too...).

Over the years, the Games 100 Game of the Year has usually been a solid game, even if it has not been the game I would have personally chosen. I wish Pillars a better fate than last year's winner, which was already being dumped by its publisher by the time the magazine was published!

I suppose on that score it's already had a better fate than last year's winner.

But yes, I am happy to see it win. Now if only we can get Oprah to give a copy to everyone in the studio audience! meeple

I was jonesing for a copy of this for a long time, since I saw some favorable comparisons between this and Age of Steam. I managed to track down a copy, and played it the first chance I got, with 3 other people new to the game.

THREE HOURS LATER, the game ended. I was struck with how much randomness the game had, and how it dictated the routes you received and the goods you delivered. A three hour game is fine, and randomness is fine, but together, it's a recipe for disaster.

I traded it after I realized that the bulk of the lowest ratings came from other Age of Steam nuts.

Not sure what went wrong with your game, Isaac, but I consider this one of the best games from last year (and it would have been a much better choice than Khronos). Our games have been a bit long, but they've still only taken a little longer than two hours--three hours is hard to figure. Played with four (the sweet spot IMO) and it should play in under two hours easy. I also don't think there's much randomness there; at least, there's lots of ways of getting around it. It just isn't a comment I've heard too much about Canal Mania. Oh well, too bad.

I received this last Christmas, and have played it quite a bit. I like it enough, but it seems to suffer a bit from the same problem Scrabble does: Once two players are evenly matched, the game comes down to the luck of the draw. I do like the deduction element to the game, though.

I really enjoy Coloretto, and will play it almost any time, but Zooloretto seems to make the game unnecessarily complicated. I prefer the simplicity of Coloretto.

I thought I'd like Zooloretto better than Coloretto especially since I have young kids who like to play games. But Zooloretto takes too long to set up and put away for a game that is basically a souped up Coloretto - shuffling those little tiles is a pain. I much prefer Coloretto and wish I had spent that $30-$40 on another game.

I find the game enjoyable and the slight changes and theme addition have made Zooloretto a better game, in my estimation. This is not to say that Coloretto is a bad game, but there is more depth and range of play in Zooloretto than in Coloretto.

I would agree, and specifically, I think the inclusion of useful options for non-scoring animals in Zooloretto dampen down the "screw your neighbor" aspect of Coloretto strategy, which I felt was a bit too strong.

I'm with you. Coloretto is very fast, fun, surprisingly deep, and has an elegant simplicity. Zooloretto isn't a bad game, but I'm looking for something different from a $40, nearly-an-hour game than I am from a $10, 15-minute game.

Exactly. While Zooloretto may be a better all around game, I think that Coloretto is much better at what it's trying to do - it's a great filler with a lot of tough decisions. As a full game, Zooloretto is good, but not great. It's also a lot more forgiving, which reduces the tension quite a bit.

I just wanted to point out that this sort of tension is what makes Coloretto such a fun game for me. This may very well be the reason why I prefer the card game over the board game.
