My Essen 2007 takeaway

These are the games I bought and brought home from Essen in 2007 - after spending Thursday and Friday days at the fair. I decided I would leave the extremely busy Saturday and Sunday to people with more patience than myself!
As you can perhaps tell from the obligatory pile-of-games picture, it was a bit of a challenge to stick to BA's weight restrictions: strictly 1 piece of checked luggage and 1 piece of hand luggage each. Fortunately, my wife was there too so we just managed to squeeze it in...:
For each game, I've included my current impression - this may be after playing it a few times, after watching it being played, after having the rules explained, or just after listening to the buzz. Either way, it's temporary and will probably evolve as I get to know the games better...
I have also created a companion list with games I looked at, played, or wanted - but didn't buy, and why.

The latest addition to Project GIPF, replacing TAMSK. TZAAR is simply fantastic: easy to learn, and so hard to master. A very worthy new conclusion to the project, and one I'll enjoy playing again and again I am sure.
This is the special 1000-copy-Essen-pre-release version.

I picked this up in spite of the fact that it's a card game: everyone I spoke to said it was fantastic. I hope they are right: I have yet to even open the box!

This game had a huge buzz about it, and looks interesting. I had the rules explained and it seems good, I wanted it. It has two maps (Hamburg on one side and Londinium on the other), and I look forward to playing it very much.

I bought this one in spite of myself: The theme is great, and I really hope it's good too - the 20 minutes I spent playing it is too little to tell, although I fear it may be too convoluted and fairly unbalanced.
I am not impressed with the fact that the box is huge and largely empty. Don't these people know how precious suitcase-space is?

The only game I pre-ordered, this looks like a gem. Small box, and interesting rules!

This one was worth the wait; it didn't arrive until late Thursday and poor Miss Canada was stuck at the booth with no game to show.
I have played it twice already and it's very good: No dice rolls or cards, and not as formulaic as Puerto Rico. A hit with everyone so far.

A nice little filler. I played it once and thought it looked pretty and was good fun - not to mention the reasonable box size, of course.

Fantastic little game, with two difficulty levels. Plays very well, and is a good laugh.

I picked this one up purely based on the buzz: Everyone was playing it, and most people looked like they enjoyed it a lot. Lots of pieces!

This should be a fun game for the family, with enough in it that the adults don't get too bored.

Last year's bestseller from Czech Games, I bought this because I liked the theme, it was very popular last year, and their new title was completely sold out.

Lovely game with interesting mechanics. I watched lots of people play this and look forward to it myself.

Picked this up after a test game as it was surprisingly good fun - will go down well with the family. It was Spiel des Jahres in 2005.

Again a game from a couple of years ago, but lots of people talked about it - and as the box isn't too big and I found it for just 10 Euros, it was just too tempting...

This game just looks great, and as players said it also was really good, I picked up a copy. Huge box, though - hopefully worth it!

An old classic, I've always wanted this but never quite got round to buying it. For 17 Euros, I just couldn't resist, even though the box is huuge!

Cute, short card game with cat in the theme. Just had to do it.

Cute gimmick: A game that allows you to quickly (and in an amusing fashion) choose a start player for another game

I like Werewolf. How could I resist an Ultimate version? And really small, too!

I fell for the sales guy's pitch on this one. I have no idea whether it's good, just that the title is embarrassing.

I bought this extension to AoS as well as the new Europe and Mississippi Steamboat ones. They certainly don't take up much space per $$$ - hopefully they add a lot to the game...

Lots of people still talk about this game, and as it was 8 Euro and very small, I picked up a copy. The rules are in German only, but it still looks like it'll be fun

Another small game that I picked up at the booth next to where they were demonstrating Moai, which I thought I was going to get. Opinion amongst people that played it varied though, and instead I ended up picking this one - it looks like it is both small and fun, with no luck element.

I tried it - as you say, the game ought to be right up my street. As I explain on this list of games I didn't buy, I didn't think it would suit me or the people I play with...
Pity!
