These are the games I bought and brought home from Essen in 2007 - after spending Thursday and Friday days at the fair. I decided I would leave the extremely busy Saturday and Sunday to people with more patience than myself!

As you can perhaps tell from the obligatory pile-of-games picture, it was a bit of a challenge to stick to BA's weight restrictions: strictly 1 piece of checked luggage and 1 piece of hand luggage each. Fortunately, my wife was there too so we just managed to squeeze it in...:

For each game, I've included my current impression - this may be after playing it a few times, after watching it being played, after having the rules explained, or just after listening to the buzz. Either way, it's temporary and will probably evolve as I get to know the games better...

I have also created a companion list with games I looked at, played, or wanted - but didn't buy, and why.

The latest addition to Project GIPF, replacing TAMSK. TZAAR is simply fantastic: easy to learn, and so hard to master. A very worthy new conclusion to the project, and one I'll enjoy playing again and again I am sure.

This is the special 1000-copy-Essen-pre-release version.

We played this once in my group, and it was ok, but not brilliant. The main complaint is that there is too little social interaction required - it all just goes round and round until the end.

Not quite what I had hoped for, I must admit. Probably a 6.

I bought this one in spite of myself: The theme is great, and I really hope it's good too - the 20 minutes I spent playing it is too little to tell, although I fear it may be too convoluted and fairly unbalanced.

I am not impressed with the fact that the box is huge and largely empty. Don't these people know how precious suitcase-space is?

This one was worth the wait; it didn't arrive until late Thursday and poor Miss Canada was stuck at the booth with no game to show.

I have played it twice already and it's very good: No dice rolls or cards, and not as formulaic as Puerto Rico. A hit with everyone so far.

The scoring system in this new Extreme version is simpler than in the original - and you no longer need to do a frantic scramble to get there.

I think that's good, as the main action of course is in the puzzles, not in grabbing the right gems

It's very simple. Each player gets to grab animals (cards) out of the bag for as long as she likes, but loses all of the ones from the current turn if a duplicate is drawn. Whenever a card is drawn that matches the top card of another players' stacks, those top cards are added to the active player's current hand.

In the simplest version, the player with the most animal cards at the end wins.

In the slightly more complex version, the basic score is added to another system where the animals are scored based on majority: the animals all occur with different frequency, and the player with the most of a particular kind scores for that kind. For example, there are 3 elephants so the player with most elephants scores 3 points. There are most monkeys - 10 - so it's worth having most of those.

The Cheeky Monkey rule allows you to substitute a monkey card for the top card of any player. This can be beneficial because the monkey card is so frequent, so it's a way to reduce the risk of a duplicate if you draw again - but of course gives the opponent one of the potentially valuable monkeys. The best is to do the swap, then draw another monkey and get the original one(s) back again

Fun, and short. The kids like it too.

I owe Die Saule der Erde too. Actually there is text on the events and "spell" cards. The board also contains some. However you tend to forget the board text after the first game.

As for the text cards I reprinted and sleeved them because I did not like the idea that they were all the same size anyway. However the japanese format card won't fit in the box,

It started in our Killer Bunnies circle: you couldn't use traditional means (die roll, RPS, youngest, etc.) to decide who goes first. It had to be something irrelevant a la
Who was the last person to throw up?
Who can first produce a marble?
Who can name the capital of Guyana?

Now we use it for all our games. Sometimes it takes a minute or even two just to decide who goes first, but we feel it's worth the fun factor.

Sure beats high card.

Again, part of a deal. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm a sucker for anything European

Another small game that I picked up at the booth next to where they were demonstrating Moai, which I thought I was going to get. Opinion amongst people that played it varied though, and instead I ended up picking this one - it looks like it is both small and fun, with no luck element.

There is luck involved. It comes from when you draw the tiles from your own pile. It is a very good game, IMHO.

Brass seems conspicuously absent from many Essen purchase geek lists so far. Based on the styles of game you purchase I'm surprised to not see it in your haul. Any particular insights you can shed on that one?

I tried it - as you say, the game ought to be right up my street. As I explain on this list of games I didn't buy, I didn't think it would suit me or the people I play with...

Pity!
