I've seen the microbadge which is perfect for me... The trouble is, I'm new to BGG so I don't have enough bag

to buy a microbadge yet. As I type I have exactly 0.00

available to spend.

Ever the optimist, I looked into the ways to earn some bag

I'm trying to earn enough GeekGold to buy myself the "Microbadger" microbadge. It would be nice to get a bit of spare gold so I can share some wealth with others.

I just need to find some crafty ways to acheive this.

I can write some fantastic reviews and session reports. According to the guide, this could earn me lots of gold. But what could a 38th review of Puerto Rico really add?

Maybe a simple review, like maybe, "I hate Puerto Rico" will work for you. It'd probably bring the closet PR haters out of the closet. You may not actually get any gold, but you'll probably get plenty of thumbs. Maybe, then, you could do a screen capture of the thumbs and submit it as a photo to score a gold or two. After several years of Geeking, I'm almost at the Avatar Level myself. :-)

I've seen some piddly session reports, but if you can *add* a strategy or test a variant, it's valuable.

Likewise, negative reviews and reviews on un-reviewed games are definitely welcome.

I sympathize with your problem Rich, although I'm glad to see you got your microbadge! I'm not really a writer, and don't own enough games to take pictures of them (although I suppose I could snap a couple of the few that I do have...), so I'm not sure where I'm going to get enough GG for my coveted microbadge (a ST:TNG communicator). I may have to auction off some of my limited supply of moolah, but where's the fun in that?

Step 3: The artistic method:

I can take some fantastic photos and submit them to earn the gold. Only two problems here. 1) I'm a lousy photographer so the Mods will (justifiably) reject everything I submit. 2) I don't currently have a digital camera.

What other ways are there to earn GeekGold?

You should consider photos. At least one of your games, Associations: The Game of Quick Connections, only has one photo and it's sideways. You can easily submit at least 3 photos and will get accepted as long as they aren't blurry.

Off course, that not having a digital camera issue can get in the way. Have you thought about doing sketches of some of the games... sort of like a courtroom artist?

I submitted an image of the box the right way round - guess which of my four images was the only one rejected...

Reason: The image was badly cropped or not rotated.
Reason: The image was sideways or upside down.

Okay, it was a bit blurry too. I'm going to retake the picture tomorrow when it's daylight. Then resubmit it pointing out which way is up.

I'd probably stand a chance if I had any real computer skills. (I only figured out Windows media player last week!) So I'll wait for Amazon to deliver my copy of Computing for Dummies before I try this.

You know, I actually did have the opportunity to steal some GeekGold at BGG.con. Derk handed me four 100

codes when I was running a Werewolf Game. I gave 2 to the Wolves who won, and then the other 2 to a player who manages the Werewolf Database Cassandra. When you play enough games on the forum there, the WW community rallies to get you an Avatar. Now, there will be 200

available to help that cause.

But it was SOOOO tempting to keep them.

Geeklist games and images don't actually have to match. You can enter the game ID and then enter whatever Image ID you want. (e.g. You can look up whatever image you want first and copy the ID, then enter the game you want, then paste in the ID.)

You could moderate pictures, sessions and reviews. This seems like a fairly consistent method of acquiring GG.

Look at the top bar on any page... click on "misc", then click on "geekmod" in the sub menu. Then click on the category you wish to mod, probably best to start with "images". Then correctly guess whether the image will be rejected or acepted by an unspecified majority of other modders, and if it is noy an image, award the author a certain amount of gg depending on the quality of submission.

Then watch the hundredths of gg roll on in!

After working hard at modding, reviews, session reports, etc. I got tired of waiting for my bag

to fill up with

. So, I posted an auction in the Bazaar for $7.77 via paypal. It netted me 48

, which was enough to get me over the top. Exchange rates seem to hover around 6-8

You can also get some

by adding ebay auctions to games.

Just pick a game, you find not overpopular (all auctions will be added yet) and not unpopular (no auctions at all and if some, noone will click 'em), preferably some, you like yourself, and slide it's page right down to where ebay auctions are. Click Add link and do your best to find a lot of it.

Was doing this for quite some time before I found out GeekModding, now I mod more, than I ebay, but still I do both. Hopefully, I'll get my Avatar before Christmas.

You've just illustrated one of BGG's biggest problems. Your only viable alternatives are to submit Puerto Rico's 38th review or to take lousy pictures. Thank you for having the restraint not to.

Agreed. I have been active on this site for over 1.5 years and have done plenty of posts and tried to be generally helpful, but am still only halfways to my avatar. This is since I insist of only adding information where information is lacking, and not doing the 38th review of Puerto Rico etc. Most, if not all, of my games were bought on recommendations from the geek and the games I have are therefore the most popular and the most reviewed, pictured etc. I am seriously thinking about buying unknown and possibly not-so-great games just to have something to write about so I can get my avatar. But should I chance my hard earned money just to be able to buy a picture? Still undecided there. Guess I could uncover some hidden gem, which is probably part of the reason behind the geekgold system: to add new and interesting info.

Still, I think they should lower the cost of avatars to 20, that is hard enough.

Edit: I realize that was a rant, but I had to get it out of my system. I feel much better now.

Edit2: Three very kind people have donated geekgold to me, thank you so much! I am now above 20 GG, just a few more reviews/session reports and I am there.

OK, a fair point - though many games could use more useful, well thought out material. Badgerman lists quite a few games that he ownsd which don't have much (if any) material, including several reviewless ones. There are one or two in your collection as well (Knightmare Chess 2 for example). Even a review pointing out the massive flaws in a game can be useful - perhaps especially so. Unless you're trying to sell it of course!

I am perhaps fortunate in having accumulated a large number of games over the years and so have a stock of unreviewed and forgotten games I could write about. Though my wife may not agree that this is a good thing, she seems to feel that one could keep clothes and other such fripperies in cupboards!
