I spend way too much time on BGG. Knowing this to be true, I decided to actually do something productive and useful for my fellow Geeks while I'm here rather than continue to passively overload on information. (My wife questions my use of and definition of the words "productive" and "useful" in regards to sitting in front of a screen for several hours, but, alas, BGG has made such a wretch of me).

Having made that decision, I knew that I was interested in what sort of year 2008 is going to be. I can only imagine that my fellow Geeks are also interested.

This list is an attempt to list every game in one single geeklist that is found with a 2008 release date in the BGG database. That means that this list does not include games like the English reprint of Agricola, for example. If someone else wants to add any of these reprints at the end of my list, you may feel free to do so. Also, I'd love to see added any games that should have come out in 2007 and are listed as such in the database, but really won't be out until 2008.

Please, enjoy.

Warning: This list is full of wargames. I'm not sure why it is that so many wargames have been listed in the database for 2008, but they are the majority of games that could be found at this present date. I'm only a dabbler in wargames and in no way am I trying to speak authoritatively about these games. Please, add any comments that you wish. It was surprising to me that there weren't many Euro games listed. Anyone want to explain to me why not?

I think it's fair to say that this will only appeal to hardcore "board wargame enthusiasts."

Adam Starkweather has really done a good job pimping the games in the International Games Series. This should do really well, especially amongst wargamers.

"The Civil War in the Far West: The New Mexico Campaign, 1862 (NMC), is a two-player, low-to-intermediate complexity simulation of the Confederate invasion of the US southwest. It's primarily a strategic-level design, but it also contains operational undertones. The Confederate player is generally on the offensive, but the situation also calls for the Union player to make counterattacks." -http://www.decisiongames.com/html/issue_252.html

It's nice to see games exploring lesser-known frontiers. There's not a chance that I'll pick this game up (or most of the wargames on this list, for that matter), but I do respect the attempt to tackle a new subject.

"The train game based...in Ancient Egypt?!?"

I played a protoype of this early this summer and can only say that it's a fun game. These were my comments here on the Geek immediately after playing:

"It seems like I'm a bit too late, but I'm agreeing with Sue and a few of the above posters. The special abilities relate to the identities almost perfectly. And, like many have pointed out, the game is an inside joke. I just played a demo of the game over the weekend (thank you Ken) and I want to strongly state that I am in favor of keeping the designers. The game is derivative (in a good way) and an homage to a few great games that have come before it. It's a good game that could stand on its own, but I think that keeping the designer cards in is a good way to tip your hat (with a wink of the eye, of course) in appreciation. Sort of slyly acknowledging your debt. If you're going to have railroads in ancient Egypt, I think you ought to have game designers there instead of gods. It's the only way the theme makes sense!

Love the fruits."
