Players take on different roles (scientist, medic, researcher, dispatcher, operations expert) to discover the cures for 4 deadly diseases spreading the earth. If disease spreads uncontrolled, the players all lose. If they find the cures, they win.

The board shows earth with some big population centres. On each turn a player can use 4 actions to travel, cure, discover and build. Cards are used for this, but the deck also contains Epidemics...

Just got it on Friday. Read the rules Sunday. The rules were very clearly written with well-thoughtout examples of some of the more "complex" issues of play. Great example of what all rule sets should look like. If this is the level of rules writting we can expect from Z-man, I'll definitely be buying more of their products in the future.

2 to 4 players build a new civilization together. Time isn't very important, if you only do a few things, you will be early in the turns but perhaps you have done too little. Everything is about production, if you produce goods you can buy with them more buildings or produce more goods. Or you reach new advancements for your victory.

Zev is releasing this with all new graphics for the cover and components.

I like this cover posted in the games' gallery:

But ZMan has posted a rather cartoony, goofy cover on their Sneak Peek page

Where did the wagon cover come from? Eggertspiele? And any chance we can revert to it instead of the current sneak peek? Or will Eggertspiele and ZMan have two different print runs/covers?

Sadly, the covered wagon cover is not being used, according to an Eggertspiel decision, so Z-Man must follow along. The original artist is a really nice guy and I liked the covered wagon cover, so I am sad they are not using the covered wagon cover!

****Part of Peter's decision is that the cover looked too close to the recently released game, Oregon.

Well now!

I've developed a habit of snapping up the original editions of Japanese games that sometimes appear in my FLGS - because no way will they ever be published in English... right?

I need a new hobby.

Seriously, it's great to see that Z-Man's line of Japanese games continues strong. I love showing off my Grimpeur and Japon Brand copies, but to have games like R-Eco or Carthage available to the wider public is just brilliant.

This is a superb game. Right up there with R-Eco in terms of something great from the Land of the Rising Sun. If I have any grip, its that the Carthage theme is a bit silly. This would have more appeal if set in Asia. The traders of Osaka has more novelty value than another damn game set in the ancient Mediterranean.

In Agricola, you're a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you'll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rugrats?

Die Macher and Wallenstein are both ranked higher than Agricola. Wallenstein was never published in English, and Die Macher was in the top 10 for years before it was recently published in English.

Yes... It really is quite dubious that a new German game, currently only available in German from Germany (of all places) should be rated (and perhaps appreciated) a bit more by a bunch of Germans, who can play the game without paste-ups and a dictionary... it must be a conspiracy!

No, Agricola really is a very good game. Once the English edition is out, it might actually get a few more nines and tens.

Played it for the first time tonight. Not a bad game but nothing super. The problem is the game is designed as an 8 player game but with 8 players there's so much downtime. This really hurts the game because it's suppose to be a filler game.

I love the concept of a boardgame version of Werewolf. Would have liked to have seen this concept in a deeper game though as I think it has so much potential.

A fast game where players blind bid for dynasty cards such as warriors, nobles, bureaucrats, peasants, and merchants. You must balance your claims to score well at the end. There are special cards gotten from having the most in a category to give you a special bonus: the Palace, for example, let's you see all bids before placing yours, or the Heir, which allows you to claim one unclaimed dynasty card.

I playtested this at Essen and told Zev to immediately pick it up. It's a filler-length game (think 30 minutes or so) that's considerably replayable and has more depth to it than first meets the eye. That's why I think it has that "oomph"; I'm always conscious of the whole "length:depth" ratio of games, so this one was clearly a winner (to me).

This is a negotiation game in the truest sense of the word. In it, players acquire ownership of sections of city blocks then place tiles, representing businesses, onto the block-sections. At the end of each turn, each tile you've laid gives you some sort of payout, but completed businesses (formed of three to six connected tiles of the same type) pay quite a bit better. All these resources are dealt to the players randomly, however, so players must trade to get matching businesses and adjacent locations.

Players are chefs preparing all sorts of sushi recipes using recipe cards. Ingredient tiles are drawn and placed on a board: when a recipe is completed it scores points. If the recipe is completed in the same order as listed on the recipe card, it is scored with style - you get one or more Wasabi cubes as a bonus to your score. There are some special cards that allow you to perform different actions to spice up the game.

Pretty game with a lot of pieces. As best I could tell, the point of the game was to assemble sushi rolls based off of specific ingredients.

An abstract game where players try to get their king to the middle of the board. Each player has 13 other blocks that can be promoted 1, 2, or 3 times, thus increasing their movement capability. A "magnet", a black pawn, is placed on a gridded point and affects all of a player's pieces on lines radiating out from that point, moving them closer to the magnet. You can capture other pieces in this way, removing them from the board. The king cannot be promoted so don't promote all your other pieces or you will give away your king's location.

I playtested this one a while back. I'm not sure whether it has changed since we played, but I hope it's ok to talk about it. The game is essentially an abstract with hidden information. The centerpiece of the game is not actually the magnet, but a clever movement mechanic, where you can promote a piece to increase its movement range, but only to its natural limit, which is visible only to you. You are trying to capture your opponent's King, which cannot be promoted. So, there's lots of room for bluffing and deduction, and it makes for some neat positional play. The magnet, I believe, has the potential to let you pull off some multi-piece combos, but other than that, we didn't grasp how to harness it in our one playing. I'm not a huge fan of abstracts but I liked the design ideas in this one. It's simple to pick up but I suspect it could be rather deep.

Start Player solves this problem: Just turn over a card and you’ll know who the start player is. Maybe it’s as simple as the tallest player, or the player with the most unbuttoned buttons.
