Decorating Advice - Game Board Maps

I've been looking a way to decorate my room and turn it into an official Gaming Den. My girlfriend had the great idea of using boards from board games to decorate the walls - specifically ones with maps.

So help me out! I need an excuse to buy more games to find games with beautiful boards as maps. I'll then find a way to mount them so that the games are still playable - so gameplay is also important.

Thanks!

Well, I'll go first. Not sure what kind of maps you're looking for, but Portobello Market definitely contains one of my favorite boards. Full of details (Westminster Abbey looks awesome), and great quality overall. The game itself is merely "good" in my opinion, but it's quick fun anyway and the board is just a pleasure to look at! :)

A very pretty board! I'll be investigating this game, I haven't even heard of it before. I would preffer more nation-wide scale maps, but I'm not picky. :)

Sort of an example and a counter-example. This board *looks* fantastic, but there are some big empty areas on it (i.e. the ocean) that could have been used for something. Also the board art sometimes obscures the scoring track, which is kind of annoying.

But it terms of pure aesthetics (and I'll have to admit there's something indulgent about a giant board with a ton of empty space), it's pretty awesome.

No need to settle for just one box, you could decorate the whole wall with these tiles. AND you could change the layout again and again, and maybe write some subliminal messages with roads.

At *some* point, girlfriend permitting, I'm going to paint my bathroom in Carcassonne tiles. :) The main problem is that the tiles would be a huge hassle to actually play with.

My thought behind the room is to go, "Hey, that's a pretty board!" "Yes, its part of game abc. Would you like to play?"

Come on now, I want to decorate my room, not stay up late at night, drooling, and wishing my friends would play more wargames. ;)

Noted.

I'd rather not have too many war games, simply because they won't be played. I also need to make sure they are still aquirable for a decent price. :)

I would love to own this game regardless, but I've been hesitating to pull the trigger based on its OOP price.

This one is not part of the game, but a user map that you could get printed...

Printing the map is very doable, but I think it would cut back on the fun of having game boards on the walls.

This is not a good photo, but I've always thought some nice clean hex wargame maps such as A-H Waterloo or A-H Stalingrad would look nice on walls, particularly behind glass in frames.

How are you planning on displaying the game boards on the wall, but still be able to play on them?

Although one could bolt or nail or glue pictures to a wall, there also exist certain clever techniques of hanging pictures on a wall in such a way that they may be removed (perhaps to lay them horizontally on a gaming table, hypothetically speaking) and later rehung at the same place on the wall. A consultation with an expert at a framing shop or hardware store may help.

A good question, and still being debated. The first idea was to attach hooks on the top of the boards, but I don't want to damage the boards, and I also want to make sure they lie flat.

Another idea is to have a top and bottom edge on the wall with a lip, so that the gameboard could slide in and out easily.
we are going to Velcro the boards to a thin board or poster board then hang THAT on the wall. Our den is being decorated with board games as well - mainly vintage games that we don't ever play (such as monopoly, scrabble, etc).
