My wife and I managed to ensnare a couple of my college buddies to become our board game night partners. They were just recently married (Dec 2007). And as a wedding present, we decided to forgo the traditional wedding present and give them a bunch of games, especially 2-player games that they could enjoy themselves as a couple (on their honeymoon).

And here's the list of the ones we chose and some reasons why.

Feel free to add others that you think 1) are foundations to a game collection and 2) equally good for 2-player and multiplayer.

There were a few honorable mentions that didn't make it (Frank's Zoo - which they already owned) and Mama Mia (which I just forgot about when I did the online ordering).

In the eternal battle of Ameritrash vs Eurotrash?
Eurotrash.

In the eternal battle of Carc vs. Settlers?
Carcassonne, any day and twice on Sunday.

Since I saw this as gift as a foundation for their game collection, this was almost a must-have on the list.

Was tempted to get them the big-box, but didn't want to overwhelm them.

My wife and I actually played San Juan before we played Puerto Rico. And we like San Juan a bit more - faster and simpler play. We tried Puerto Rico with Chris and Jessica, but they thought it was too heavy. Since Puerto Rico is #1 on the geek, we felt we couldn't leave it out. Thus, we went for Puerto Rico lite.

It was either Thurn & Taxis or TTR. And we went with Thurn and Taxis.

My reasoning was thus: TTR seems to be a lot more common and easy to find in "normal", non-gaming stores. And so if Jessica and Chris were so inclined, they could go out and pick up a TTR variant a lot more easily than a Thurn and Taxis.

Plus, this is one of my wife's favorites to play. And we thought they would enjoy this game both as a 2-player as well as when they had company.

Basic reasoning: It was cheap to buy them together as a package. And provides opportunity for variety if T&T original gets stale.

A great two-player game with pretty bits mixed with plenty of strategy. Portable and enjoyable.

I hope they brought this one for their honeymoon trip.

I know this is blasphemous, but I don't LOVE or even really LIKE this game, and neither does my wife, but since it is always one of the first, if not THE first game mentioned when people talk about 2 player games for couples.

I actually prefer Hera and Zeus, Jambo, and Odin's Ravens to this one. I am regretting it a bit, but I figured I'd go with popular consensus.

Like Balloon Cup, however, it is portable.

A nice easy to learn game that they can use to ensnare other unsuspecting friends.

Maybe you youngsters are different now-a-days. Back in my time, there was only ONE 2-player thing I was interested in during my honeymoon! IIRC, that SHOULD keep them busy the whole time.

Can I find the rules for that game somewhere? We keep making mistakes.
