I know this is a board game site, but there are enough card games on here too. I also know that there have been lists made of card games, but all of them seem to involve custom decks. Nothing wrong with that, but what can people play if they only have a 'standard' deck of 52 (13 cards x 4 suits), plus potentially 2 jokers?

Note: I've played with a dutch deck and a french deck before too. Italian deck I saw was different; might've had more or less cards or suits - I only remember the 'cups' suit.

This list is meant for games needing the cards ONLY (and maybe a scorepad); no extras! Therefore, cribbage & rummoli & sequence & Canyon (for example) are excluded.

Not all of the games are on BGG, nor are there pictures associated with all - it is, after all, just a deck of cards! Therefore, I've improvised, and used names and/or pictures which are not really for the game indicated in the comments.

Please add any I've missed!
--------------------------
May 29/04 - Good point made about cribbage really being just a card game with scorepad. I guess I was just originally shooting for a complete list of free, public-domain card games; maybe I wasn't clear enough, but it's still a solid list.

WAR! (not on BGG)
I've got a set of cards at home with soldiers on them, but have played this WAY more often with just a standard deck.

This game is a series of 1-card battles, with winner take all. In the event of a tie, roll out a few more hidden cards each, and then battle again!

It's usually a 2-player game, but I've played it with 3, and perhaps even 4. Just decide before the game if high-card beats a lower-ranked battle or not; I've played either way.

Old Maid. I've played with variant decks too; one was called Donkey. 2-6 players.

It's the basic idea of having one card in the deck that you do NOT want to have when the hand is done.

Go fish! 2-6 players.

Ask 1 player around the table for a card you need to make a pair (or all 4, depending on the predetermined rules). If you got what you asked for, then you get to go again. If not, then you'll be told to 'go fish', at which point you pick a random card from the remainder of the deck.

The person with the most pairs or sets at the end of the game wins.

Cheat! 3-7 players.
Similar to Crazy Eights, if I recall, in that you are trying to get rid of all your cards first. However, you can play multiple cards that match (pairs, triples, etc.), and the twist here is that you are ALLOWED to cheat, by adding extra cards to what you SAY you are playing. If you are caught, though, then you have to pick up ALL the cards played so far. (I might have this game wrong; feel free to correct me!)

CRAZY Eights. 3-7 players.
I learned this one before Uno, but they are VERY similar.

Eights are wild, and may be played at any time, with the person playing the eight deciding what the new suit will be. Fours and/or jacks are skip-a-turns, and twos and/or aces are pickup-2 or -1 more cards. Queen of spades can be a pickup-4/5.

Solitaire.
There are MANY, MANY variants of solitaire, including multi-player. Some of the ones I've seen are: Klondike, Pyramid, King's Corners. FreeCell, a popular, free game with Windows software, is a solitaire game, in my opinion.

The basic idea is to match up the cards is some manner, following some set of rules, to include the entire deck in the matches.

The game with the 'president'. 4 players, but I've played with 5.

Every seat around the table has a name and rank, and the goal is to get to the top (or to avoid being in the derogatory bottom spot, where you have to rake in EVERY trick AND deal all the cards AND give away your best ones). Often called 'climbing' games, where to play on the trick, you must play higher-ranking cards or sets.

Dilbert's Corporate Shuffle, the Great Dalmuti, Karriere Poker, and Frank's Zoo all seem to be custom-decked examples of this game.

Screw your neighbour / Oh Hell. I've heard other names too. Works with 3 thru 7 players.

In these games, you are dealt a gradually increasing/decreasing # of cards, and you must bid how many tricks you *think* you can take.

Wizard and Rage are examples, in my opinion, although both are custom-decks with custom rules too. But gameplay itself matches this description.

7-4-1 with 4 players; 9-5-2 with only 3 players.

This is a trick-taking game, where the players have their bids dictated to them (hence, the game name) depending on where they are seated. Take as many tricks as you can!

Euchre. I've played variants with 2, 3, or 6, but this is typically a 4-player, partnership game.

Uses only a subset of the deck; for 4 players, 9,10,J,Q,K,A.

House rules for: order your partner, having a 'natural' (left-bower doesn't count) to pick it up, scoring with 2s & 3s versus 5s, no ace/no face/no trump, etc.

Bid how many tricks you can get, and then work as a team to get your combined bid, preferably while foiling your opponents from doing the same. Spades are ALWAYS trump.

Poker. MANY variants exist for this betting game - Texas Hold'em, 5 card draw, 5 or 7 card stud, dealer's choice, etc. Works best with 4 or more players; probably up to about 8.

Non-professional games may include some type of wild cards, so 5-of-a-kind is possible, and beats all else. Otherwise, royal flush, 4-of-a-kind, straight flush, etc. See game link for specific order/rank of hands.

Tichu (custom cards) is a cross between poker, climbing games, and partnership games.
