Minor nit, but my friend and I played the original several dozen times. Then he moved, and most of his games were in storage and he couldn't find this one so he bought another copy. It was exactly the same except the nationalist had gone from black to green. They're Fascists for God's sake, they're supposed to be black.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Most of you wouldn't be caught dead playing this one anyway. But I've always been a fan. I played the heck out of this game as a kid, and while it's certainly a simple, shallow, luck driven game for adults, it's still a wonderful game to play with children.

Remembering how much I'd loved it as a child, I bought a newer copy recently to play with my niece, and danged if they didn't throw me for a loop with the new board layout. Holy cow!

The version I remember playing was very symmetrical. You could easily tell at a glance where all the pieces are and how the game is going.

This newer version however is like trying to race through a neon bright Escher painting.

Honestly, the basic layout of the board isn't really that removed from the older version. There still seems to be the same number of spaces, and they follow the same basic trail. It's just that the slightly off-center board covered in such bright, garish colors is so very, very hard on my poor, old eyes and age addled adult brain. I expect to occasionally get an Escher headache when playing RoboRally, but not when playing a game intended for 6 year olds and up. Please, Milton Bradley, won't you consider the grown-ups? cry

I'll say it: The 3 different versions of scoring fFarms annoy me. And Rio Grande, blessed souls that they are, have printed a number of different mutant rule sets. And, to make things interesting, the Barn included in the "Abbey & Mayor" uses a new mongoloid aberrant method. Oy.

I like version 1. Sue me. Near as I can tell, version 2 was a complete mistake, and version 3 makes green spaces act all too similar to yellow spaces. meh.

Cities pay points to whoever is giving them the most resources. (And, fFor the barn, we simply score the barn as if carries the weight of 2 meeples towards the scoring of a city)

But I guess, uhm, I'm probably in the minority, here on the geek.

AH design is certainly more flashy than the old ones, but the "cool" bits make it impossible to use some of the powers. Which is probably why AH version includes only twenty. When my friend told me she played this piece of yuk (she hadn't played my Mayfair before), I told her she hadn't really played CE at all.

Don't ask me for dates, but in the game I used to play as a kid, you need to conquer provinces.
In a late 80ies edition here in Germany, they changed the wording to "liberate" provices... I guess that's more PC, isn't it?
Well, it just felt the same if you crushed your best friend's armies.

In the first edition, the names of the cards are printed down the left side, so if you fan your hand, you can see the words. This is important because if anyone says one of those words, you get to interrupt.

They took that away in the new edition, for reasons unknown.

Also, the symbols are in the corners of the old edition, easy to spot. This makes it hard to play Interrupt cards, which rely on the symbols. See below:

If you were hanging out for the redo of the Classic 'Empires' by DG, they seemed intent on changing the best aspects of the original game...the 1st edition map was a brilliant meshing of form & function which at a glance showed the areas language, religion, social state etc. The new edition introduced an area map....what gives?

Never, I mean, NEVER, you want the new version of Abacus, shown scandalously even as the representative image, but you want THIS edition on the left from 1986 (still available at ebay):

Why? I tell you:
The original edition consists 281 dice for 57 different games. Got that?

The new one consists 166 dice and the rules for 6 games.

Adel is a great game. We played it so much in college that you can only read the cards if you already know them by heart. Some in our group managed to find the "By Hook or By Crook" version. Then they go issue a new version entitled "You'd be Embarrassed to Own This" and they add a sixth player when five is the only valid number of players for this game.

Smess is a chess-like game. It's primary distinction is that each space has one to eight pointers on it, and you can only move a piece in the direction of a pointer.

There are three types of pieces. The Brain is the equivalent of the King in Chess (lose him and you lose the game), and moves one space like a King, though restricted by the terrain. You get seven Ninnies, which also move one space like the Brain. And you have four Numskulls, which are the powerful pieces which move any distance, like the Chess Queen, though again, restricted by the pointers on the space it stands on.

It's actually a very good game--better than Chess IMNAAHO--but it has a marketing problem. The cartoony graphics, the silly plastic pieces, the silly names, and of course the subtitle "The Ninny's Chess" proudly written on the box and board give the impression this is a silly children's game.

So Parker Brothers decided to retheme the game so it looks like an adult game. The dignified, adult name is All the King's Men. The Brain became the King (of course), the Ninnies became Archers, the Numskulls became Knights, and the cartoony pointers became simple arrows, like this:

In the process, two of the squares were changed (can you spot it?), and I don't know whether that change is accidental or deliberate, nor whether it makes the game better or worse. However, a few days ago, I stumbled across a year old message from Moshe Callen, saying he liked the game but the end game is broken. I haven't played this in 35 years, but I didn't remember the end game being broken. I thought it was plausible though unlikely that the minor board change had made it impossible to trap someone, but that was not the case. After trading a few messages with Moshe and Paul Schulzetenberg, I realized that they were talking about it being impossible to trap the King with a King and Archer, and an Archer is a Ninny. It has been 35 years, but I know what to do in that circumstance. You march your Ninny/Archer down the board to one of your opponent's Numskull/Knight starting squares and promote him to Numskull/Knight.

But in the retheme Parker Brothers left out the promotion rule!

I bought this version of Zooloretto for 5 euro's at a flea market last month. Was very happy with it. Until I saw the artwork and compared it with the artwork of the original version as shown here on BGG. Now I want to cry. First of all the box: It is very white and shows all kind of animals that are not in the game. And the pictures of the animals are probably Clip-Art taken from the internet. The board and animals inside are worse. The original art is alive, cute, consistent and gives a great overall picture. The art in this Burgers' Zoo version is dead, boring and just plain ugly. It's really a shame. I can't imagine why they made it differ so much from the original.

In the 30th Anniversary edition Stronghold got rid of the Dolphins and the Dive die (both of which aren't in the original Survive!, but are in Escape from Atlantis). If they're going to leave out the part that makes it Escape from Atlantis, they should just call it Survive!

Hopefully they'll offer them as an expansion in the future...

GOSU 2: Tactics

The only thing that seems remotely interesting in this new version is the emphasis on "linking". Everything else, in my opinion, is a horrible spit in the face of the people who enjoyed Gosu.

It is incompatible with Gosu: Kamakor and any other expansions that may have eventually came along. I imagine that no more expansions will ever be released, or if they are, they'll be for Gosu 2 (which will cause a whole new type of confusion).

There are rules in Gosu 2 that are similar to card effects in Gosu, primarily because Gosu 2 lacks an element of eloquence that was sacrificed in order to make the game seem more complex than it actually is. What this did do, it seems, is make learning the game more difficult while actually (aside from what I said about linking) making the game a lot strategic.

It just seems to me that everything I liked about Gosu was stripped away, and one element that I really like was added. I'm pretty sure that the part that I like could have been added in an expansion without murdering the game that I enjoy.

The new (Kickstarter via Game Salute) version screwed up the art so badly—not just in style, but in a way that materially affects gameplay—that the designer printed stickers at his own expense to distribute with the game, so that backers could “fix” the game pieces.

And then there's crappy electronic timer.

Read some of the details here.
