This is the 2008 version of the Thrift Find of the Week, where the weeks "best" thrift find is chosen, to be honored by all thrifting geeks.

Here's last year's list
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/18611

And the 2006 list:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/13367

Criteria for selection include:
Uniquness of the find.
Coolness of the find.
Pure eBay value of the find.
Whatever other whacked-out reasons the judges decide to use...

If you disagree with the judges decision, please don't hesitate to add your comments, and the judges will arbitrarily make their decisions anyway. laugh

And the new thrifting year gets underway. Another year having our thrfting life sucked out of us by the irritant squad. But such treasures!!!

Quite a few really nice finds this first week of 2008. Lets start with a nice War and Peace, canceling Axis & Allies, and KRULL! A Prize Property, a Ticket To Ride and a Supremacy - unplayed! Who'd a thunk it? newboy1721 nearly snagged the first prize of the new year, but was nipped out by his own find of Vinci, this week's Thrift Find of the Week!!!

The first full week of 2008 starts off with a bang! First page: Bamboleo, Circus Maximus, Trias, and Cartagena! Then we get a Bus, a Gibsons Civ, my Kingmaker and a near winner in Aladdin's Dragons. But this should be called, "The Week of Martin", as despite his lack of a win, he did snag a Tikal, a Hotels, and a Fortress America! Other notables included Here Come the Rebels, cancelling Lord of the Rings Risk trilogy editions, and a nice Epic Duels find. In the end though fellonmyhead's find of this Heartland Trefoil classic takes home the statue.

Wow, an incredible week. Quality finds just too numerous to mention. Just look through the lists and the number of 25+ Thumbed games! Crazy! Past favorites are getting dwarfed in the thumbing...

So it really came down to just a few games in the final voting. The druid judges were pushing strongly for Waldschattenspiel, the AoS purist judges had kicked out Railroad Tycoon, and you have the WTFactor with Louis XIV and AgoT, but it really comes down to Sky Galleons of Mars or Waldschattenspiel and look at Sky Galleons...It's got LAZERSPEWPEW

Drez takes home the prize this week, in a virtual dead heat with Der Das' find of Waldschattenspiel

Another tough week for the judges, but not quite as tough a set of choices as the past few weeks. Notable finds included several Survive! finds, one unpunched, cancelling Hotels, a Gibson's Civ, an Eagle American Civil War, a Schotten-Totten and a Frank's Zoo, a More Cosmic Encounter, an AH Britannia, Metropolis, a Wings of War, and a Zertz. But this week's winner is edosan for his find of Talisman, Talisman City, and Talisman Dungeon. Take your pick of which one is the best...

Finally, a week that isn't quite so difficult for the judges. Now there were quite a few nice finds this week, but nothing like the past few. First off, right off the top we have a butterbox Monad, a 1776, and an Epic Duels. Multiple Bazaars and Ticket to Rides and HeroQuests, and a nifty Pole Position find, along with a deluxe AH Acquire, and a Samurai Swords. A Maka Bana find was made, which nearly took the prize, but this week's winner was Chris Clarke for his find of Advanced Civ, and his quick thinking when he found the nearly empty Civ box...

What an incredible week of finds! Right from the top we get a Space Crusade and a Dogfight. SdJ winner Villa Paletti makes an appearance, as does a nice haul from Ken with an A&A Europe, a Smithsonian Battle of the Bulge, and a Buffy. Epic Duels made a strong claim, as did a nice dual find of Fortress America and the rarer Broadsides and Boarding Parties. But in the end, the long reigning king of thrift finds, Dark Tower, wins it for artfuldodge2 Ken, who may now no longer ever, ever complain about a bad thrifting week again.

Quite an interesting week this week, with lots of old favorites showing up, many of them strangely, still in Shrink. Things like 3M Acquire's and Kingmakers and the like. Lots of Survive!'s this week, a Khet, a Bootleggers, a Ricochet Robot and Robots, another Broadsides & Boarding Parties, a Duel of Ages and a Betrayal at House on the Hill. But then you get to the rarefied air of an El Grande, a Cleoparta, and dual Civs. But this week, you have to give it up for the land to the north, and Bwetdude's week, where he pulled down not only this week's winner, but also an Empire in Arms (+$140) and a Hotels (+$50). And it's Space Hulk! Space Hulk rocks...

Another solid week. We've got the Canadians whipping through the GIPF series, a Betrayal, a Gamemaster Conquest of the Empire, a huge haul of quality stuff by atimrogers, a nice haul including Wildlife for $5 from adangerousmuse, and a '99 Acquire from our King. A find of RAF and herman's Union Pacific find also received consideration. Add yes, what is the deal with The Denbury Resources Oil Game.

pmboos brings home the statue after many unsuccessful attmepts!!!

A week that seemed to be a bit lacking for standout finds. Started off with a bang with a Kingmaker in the #1 spot, and had a Daytona 500, a Rail Baron, die Oster Insel, and my personal favorite find, Du Balai. Cancelling Moods lead to a similar fate as Survive!, and then there was the Pirate's Cove. If one of the judges didn't hold such a grudge against Pirate's Cove for ruining a great game, it might have been the winner. But instead, the nod went to the WitheredHand, who pulled down a huge haul, capped off with this highly regarded AH gem. (Love the Avatar BTW)

An amazing week, with a tough nailbiter finish. Among the quality finds this week were a late AH Diplomacy, Rogue Trooper, and Pax Britannica. Fortress America and Cashflow 101 show up, along with Age of Mythology, Starfire and Blood Bowl. Stalingrad Pocket was insane, as were Colonial Diplomacy and Axis and Allies Revised.

And speaking of insane how about:

Or how about Goa? Goa? Really?

But in the end, the judges gave this week's award to Furunkulus for his find of Krieg und Frieden, which no doubt sat in Funagain's warehouse in nearby Ashland...

Wow, what a week. First page alone we have a King Oil, a Conquest of the Empire with a Supremacy + Expansions tucked inside, and my personal vote for FotW, a 1st edition FFG Through The Desert. Other notable finds included Warcraft, a wooden Rumis, Blue & Grey, and RA! Not to be outdone by an insane Shogun find, (missing a counter though...). Pure eBay value would probably give the win to the Russian Civil War find , but in the end the judges went back to that old AT classic, Dune. Congrats to marlinus64 for the win!

What a week. One of the most difficult on the judges in a while. Let's see what we've got here. Canceling Cashflows, Samurai Swords and more HeroQuests than you can shake an unbroken Gargoyle wing at. Carc and Carc H&G. A wicked haul of Two SdJ winners, a virgin thrifter finding an in shrink San Juan. A Ticket to Ride, an AH/HAsbro Acquire, an in shrink! Daytona 500, and yet another King Oil. How about a 50th Anniversary Risk, or LOTR:TC, Blackbeard or Zertz? Or an old AH U-Boat?
But in the end, Paul called the shot with ledous' find of El Grande.

It's good to be king

Rather a disappointing week. No real stand out finds, but it seemingly was the week of "very odd and whacked out" finds. Such finds included Avalam Bitaka, a very highly regarded abstract Ramses, Oil, the Great Adventure!, the Mysteries of Peking, etc. Quality finds included an Axis and Allies, an Expedition, an old AH Samurai, Doug's mini-haul of AH/VG goodness, topped off by Ambush!. In the end though, it came down to Darth's brother Tom's haul of both Ivanhoe AND RoboRally, vs. a garage sale Torres find, vs. this week's winner, none other than Granite Fall's own berserkley, for his find of Metro in the puzzles section of the Goodwill! Wish I didn't hate this game with a passion though...

How about Euros? Wyatt Earp or Evo? Monster Wargame? like World in Flames? Old and Unusual? Yacht Race? How cool is that!

Lunar Rails? Sweet. Talisman? Not again. But as this week's winner jpdarby was the one who found that, he shouldn't be too upset.

A couple of notable finds, a couple of great hauls, all in all a big week of 12 pages of thrifty finds to sort through. Here Come The Rebels started things off, followed up closely with a pre-Hasborg History of the World. Mr Nobody got the first haul going with a slew of AH classics as well as one of GROGnads favorites! Sweet Merciful God...

I snagged a Modern Art, a Carc: The Castle showed up. Multiple Moods and Blokuses were found. A King Oil, Ace of Aces, a smokin' Supremacy and GROGs found an Epic Duels. Deemac then had an incredible haul of nice older wargames.

In the end it came down to two finds though, belial1134's find of Magic Realm or mrivera's find of a Gibson's Britannia, and since that came along with a job offer, we'll give him the FOTW.

Has the Barnes and Nobles dump began? We shall see. I'll be happy if Pillars of the Earth becomes thrift fodder, that's for sure. Some interesting finds this week. How about multiple Daytona 500s? Or a HeroQuest expansion pack that is ch-CHING!? Paul found Ingenious and Ken found Deflexion. Magic Realm and a Jedko Russian campaign bring up the old school flag, and Du Balai and Dampfross have the foreign side of things covered. But the always awesome combo of Euro-game goodness chock full of eXtreme space doll bits that is Starfarers for $1.09 gives the win to phragged.

Wow, this was a really difficult week for the judges, with a handful of really great finds. Right from the start we have a solid wargame haul topped off with 1776 and Stonewall Jackson's Way, followed almost immediately with a Khet (pew pew). An eBait find of Full House also rolled in soon after that. Three count em three Civs were found, and there was a double find of Talisman, (same person, but still). Three Bloki hit the list, as did two Fireball Islands, and the American Heritage Beach got Hit as well. Tikal, Pirate's Cove, Odin's Ravens, and Alladdin's Dragons represented for the Euro side, and RoboRally 1st Ed + Armed and Dnagerous weighed in on the Ameritrash side, (and oh yes, less QQ plzkthnxby).

But in the end, it came down to two finds north of the border, newboy1721's find of Dune, and woocash's find of Mykerinos, with woocash winning on the tiebreaker!

After last week's pretty decent week comes another, pretty decent week. A week of what "might have beens..." A huge box of Sky Galleons minis, but alas, nothing else. An SPI War of the Ring...Cashflow and the 40th Anniversary Risk, with no final mention of completeness...Perhaps the first appearance of Blokus: Trigon of what will become a trend like regular Blokus has become? Talk about a flooded market.

GIPF, alone and unloved in the corner tries to get something going with Buck Rodgers, to no avail.

WitheredHand and Shawn_Solo had insane hauls of AH wargames and FFG and Duel of Ages x2. And Devil's Horsemen? WTeff?
The Samurai took out Sackson and after Machiavelli had a word or two with some of the judges, it was determined that yes, that old saying is true:

"It's good to be the King", or something along those lines...

Multiple Epic Duels finds, about a bazillion Survive finds, and two Which Witch? finds? Ummm. What the...

Meat gets a mention for the line:

"Hey lady! Get your cart out from in front of the games shelf! I'm browsing here!!

Oh, you're putting Citadels on the shelf. All right, continue on then.

A Heroscape Fortress was a sweet find, as were Modern Art, TI 2nd Edition and Hera & Zeus! So it came down to a battle of AT-TITANS, and in the slimmest of non-recorded margins, Jooky takes home the statue sending Shawn back to Gresham's mossier climes.

An incredible first page. Obligatory LOTR find? Check. Ingenious and Escape from Atlantis to go with it? Check. Followed quickly by a Hasbro Acquire and a Khet. Our King snagged a Shadows over Camelot, and there was a Magic Realm and an Ace of Aces. A cashflow was found, as were a classic Conquest of the Empire and an Epic Duels in shrink!

But then you get down to the real meat of the finds. Newboy1721 had an amazing find of HeroQuest, which in and of itself isn't that unusual, but with the Barbarian and Elf Quest packs? OMG. But how about the rarest of the Kosmos two-player line, Erik's find of Flowerpower? Very solid. Very, very, very solid. But the statue this week goes to myhiatus for his find of Acquire. And despite there being the usual tons of Acquire's on the list, this may be the first wooden tiled find that's appeared on these lists, which the judges deemed a worthy recipient of the Find of the Week.

Wow, I get a month and a half behind, and miss all the fun. What a week this was. Page 1, La Citta! Solid. How about an Atlantic Star and a Formula De track to go with that haul? A Sorcerer's Cave, and King EvilTimmy gets a nod for his Carc find, just for the 3 word contest it inspired. Vinci was nice, a 40th Anniversary Risk is always nice, and the Haunted House find got far less respect than it deserved, as that was a crazy find. But for crazy finds, nothing beats seeing that big box FFG plasto-beast sitting on the thrift shelf. Shawn_Solo takes home the Statue!

Another solid week for the thrifters!

Straight off the bat we get a Rumis find, followed closely by a Kingmaker and a Lords of Creation. Ken pulls a nice haul of old AH classics, and then there was a nice pickup of a Buck Rodgers game. Cashflow, Panzer Leader and Ingenious get a mention, as do an Ace of Aces find, an Airships find, and a Betrayal at House on the Hill. But this week's statue goes to schlappy for his find of the giagantic Tumblin-Dice.

Another crazy week. It was the week of Heroscapes, and Star Wars Epic Duels finds. ANd there were some serious heavy hitter finds as well. How about DaJackal's Rail Baron find, or searscho's Fireball Island find? Phragged's find of Runebound with Sands inside? Ken snagged a Cashflow and fellonmyhead grabbed an unpunched World in Flames. But neither a Dark Tower, nor a Zooloretto, nor a wooden-piece Hive are able to take down this super-rare find from Twinge.

This may go down in the annals of thrifting history as one of the most amazing in a long, long time. Let's get started. Page 1.

A-hem.

Star Crusade and WS&IM and HeroQuest w/ Kellar's Keep. Pretty solid.
An Eon Cosmic and a John Carter: Warlord of Mars.
How about a haul of more Talisman games and expansions than you could shake a stick at?
An unpunched Civilization is pretty sweet, as are Fireball Island, and Battle Cry.
statman8 pulled in a nice 3M haul, capped off with a Rail Baron.

Looking at the week as a whole, dang near any of the above-mentioned games could have, (and often have), won the coveted statue. But the judges have spoken, and I for one am happy about that, as this is one of my top 10 (#4), and crappyjacks takes it home with the progenitor of the modern CDG.

An incredibly cool week of finds. We say all the usual staples of the thrift list, (3M Acquires, AH Acquire, Clue MD, Survive, etc.) and a few interesting duplicate finds of Citadels, Swahili?!?, and even Battle Cry. Good solid finds like Thunder Road, Kingmaker, Nacht der Magier, and Ticket to Ride. RoyalOak pulled in a hugeBut then we get to the heavy hitters. Samurai Swords aka Shogun, with a bonus A&A inside! Talsiman! Dark Tower! HeroQuest Master edition. All worthy of selection as the find of the week. But it seems the judges are an erudite bunch, and chose Caliburn's unique find of a Post WWII (1946) edition of Monopoly as this week's winner.
