I find that I rarely have time to devote to digesting 45 page rulebooks at this point, and as a result most of my gaming time these days goes to low complexity games, and preferably ones with manageable play times. I assume I'm not the only one in this boat, so I thought I'd put together a list of games that fit the bill. (It should be notes that I have cut my teeth on ASL/3R/insert Victory Games product here, so complexity probably means something a little different to me than to someone who is new to the hobby. But still, most of these are very easy to figure out.)

Still perhaps my favorite of the American Heritage (Smithsonian) series, this game is quick to play, with only a single 8-1/2" x 14" sheet of paper as the Basic rules. I'll play this game in a heartbeat.

Back in the day, before Target Arnhem, this was THE freebie wargame worth playing.

I bought, and have enjoyed, The Great Patriotic War simply because of how much fun I've had playing Battle for Moscow.

This has got to be the most clear-cut example of what you're describing. I just played this recently for the first time and it was EXCELLENT! Not too many rules, limited options for movements/actions/attacks (I mean that in a good way - helps minimize "analysis paralysis" and down time between turns). Great bits, great production quality, great simulation!

I have too many favorites to pick just one, but I'll add this one as representative since it's brand new and it easily ranks up there with my other favorites.

I'd rate this on par with the simpler SCS games for complexity (about a 3 or 3.5 out of 10). Simpler than many of the others on this list, yet somewhat larger at the same time.

The large number of units might be enough to scare off a newcomer... until they realize just how quickly and simply the system plays, and how quickly the units start to disappear from the map (especially the Russian ones)!

My wife is not a fan of complex games, and she loved this one. She has requested it more than once since we put it back on the shelf after playing two back to back games. I foresee it hitting the table at home a third time again in the near future. I plan on playing this one with my wargaming buddies soon as well.

My friends and I certainly played the heck out of this quadrigame, so it might deserve a spot on the list. The Quatre Bras game is particularly well suited for newbies, as it starts with very few units and builds very manageably as reinforcements enter (it's also pretty well-balanced).

Remember this one? It doesn't have a rulebook. No, it has one gigantic sheet that you unfold that has the rules on it. It is actually a terrible way to do the rules, as the constant folding and unfolding tears the creases of the paper.

This is a very simple game, quick to play, and fun.

For me the ultimate in Low Complexity War games is The Blue & Gray Quad Game from SPI.

Two I repeat Two pages of rules for the game itself along with 1 page of distinct rules for the Quad game that you are playing. Not many pieces (Probably 100 or so). No tedious Supply records to keep. Short playing time (probably an hour or at most two hours). Mostly balanced (at least each side can attain their individual victory conditions - they are different for each side but possible for either) and overall fun to play when you do not have a weekend to devote to setting up and playing a wargame. Not for players who like exact simulations. Much more for people who want the general feel of the battle.

I'm surprised this wasn't on here already, and it is a bit towards the heavier side, but if there's room for EE and M'44, then surely there's room for Tide of Iron. The rules around op fire and a couple of other things can get a bit complicated, but the fact that Universal Head's reference condenses it into 5 pages shows that it's not inordinately complex.

Highly versatile and loads of tactical decision-making, crammed into one box.

i brought this game to Winter Offensive last week. Demoing it for the next Target Arnhem type game (not sure it will be free but mainstreamed in some way)...

It was a big hit. It was played maybe 30-40 times at the con (an ASL con BTW). Rules at about 4 pages now but that can be trimmed (probably at 3 when done). 45-60 minute play time and very tense.

Fun game.

Wargames do not get less much less complex than this one. However, even with the simple game play the lessons one can learn about the need to move and shoot at the right time in this short (less than one hour) game translate well to larger games. I used Quebec 1759 as a “gateway to wargaming” for my oldest child and it has worked so far.
