Lord of the rings, Star wars, Harry potter - all of these began as simply a story before they became icons of mainstream entertainment. Here you will find a collection of web comics which have that same potential. If you add any to the list, please make sure that they fit into the following criteria:

1) They are well developed and consistently updated
2) They maintain a rating of PG-13 or better (no nudity, extreme crude humor, or excessive language, etc)
3) They tell a story worth reading (character evolution, etc)
4) They are comparable in quality to other forms of mainstream entertainment

Any thumbs given to this list will help others to find these very geek worthy sites and will be donated to laudable causes on the geek within 48 hours.

8-Bit Theater is still one of my favorites.
http://www.nuklearpower.com/

This was the first web comic I started reading before adding Least I could DO and Looking For Group which are already mentioned in this thread.

The exploits of the original Final Fantasy gang have been going on now for years and is near the end but it is still a great read.

Sluggy Freelance by Pete Abrams.

The first webcomic I started reading and still the first one I read every day and look forward too. How do I sum up 10+ years of goofy adventures, inventions, hyper active ferrets, homicidal mini-lops, aliens, vampires, demons, etc. His story arcs have been getting longer, but he still brings the funny. Every time you think you have things figured out, he throws a screw ball.

Garfield is one of the world's most popular comic strips, though it seems to be one that people love or hate. In this comic, Garfield has been removed and we only get to see the sad, lonely life of Jon Arbuckle. The result is much funnier than the original.

Piled Higher and Deeper
http://www.phdcomics.com/
Jorge Cham

A too-true look into the lives of science grad students.

For instance:

http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=221
http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=222
http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=223

May be weakest on the character development criterion, since if the characters ever actually graduated it would end the comic--but of course their never graduating is part of the joke.

Kiskaloo
http://www.chrissandersart.com/www/blog.php
Chris Sanders

Mr. Sanders' style will be immediately recognizable; he's worked for Disney for years, and Lilo and Stitch was his baby. Kiskaloo is a new strip, it just started this year and there aren't many up, yet. It's your opportunity to get in on the ground floor!

He's just starting to settle into the comic strip format, so the pacing and story are still nascent, but the craft is second-to-none, with wonderful line work and atrractive hand lettering.

I may be in a minority, here, but I can't dig a strip that doesn't display a modicum of skill in classic draftsmanship and lettering. I hate, hate, HATE computer fonts in comics. In typical panel composition, word balloons take up half the space, and when you use a computer font, you're relegating half the panel to dead pixels.

Clearly, there are varying degrees of hate that the practice engenders in me. Some creators have clearly taken pains to select an appropriate font, and they integrate it into their art well, and I appreciate the effort. As well, for strips like Order of the Stick that are created solely from vector shapes, or are rendered in an 8-bit style like Diesel Sweeties, or are fumetti, like several examples above, a computer font makes perfect sense. But nothing wrecks a well-rendered, well-written strip like a horrid computer font. Unless you're creating a '50s E.C. comic--which you're not!--take the time to learn how to letter, or get a letterer to collaborate with you.

A tip of the hat to Ozy & Millie, The Whiteboard, xkcd, Cat and Girl, and Toothpaste For Dinner, for honoring the traditions and conventions of the medium. They're the only strips on this list that hand-letter.

Little Dee. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet. Heck, I even have a microbadge for it.

Little Dee is a lost little girl who never speaks. She's adopted by a bear, a dog, and a vulture (who steals the scenes he's in), all of whom do talk. Periodically they try to find her parents, but so far have had no luck.

Personalities are well developed, plots are usually one to two weeks long, but sometimes longer, and are enjoyable to follow. Two books have been published so far, collecting the first few years - these are highly recommended.

While occasionally a bit too cute, the author realizes this and is quick to bring Vachel (the vulture) into scenes. Vachel is one of the better sarcastic characters in comics today - always a pleasure to read.

I must say, though, that as I type this, the recent library sequence did nothing for me, probably because I don't follow rap at all. But overall, this is a great strip I look forward to reading six days a week. And yes, I've contributed to the cartoonist's tip jar, putting my money where my mouth is.

Here's a sample strip:

This one is actually a published offline comic, whose issues are later published online by the author, if i understand correctly.
I'll let the author decribe it:
Quote:
Ps238: Superheroes eventually want to start families, and so the need arose for a public school for their ultra-powerful kids. Ps238 was founded to help them train and learn what it means to wield unearthly power… except for Tyler. His parents are among the most powerful superheroes the planet has, yet he seems destined to be disappointingly normal. Sent to ps238 in the hopes that he’s a late bloomer, his adventures (and those of his classmates) have thrilled readers the world over.
