For anyone thats never done a Math Trade, I highly recommend you try it. Its a really neat way to trade games. The possibilities are nearly endless and you never know what you'll end up with.

Luckily for those of us that enjoy Math Trade's, there's a couple brilliant tools that make everything easier for the moderators and the traders. Trade Maximizer is used by the moderator to actually run the trade. This brilliant tool created by Chris Okasaki (cokasaki) is what actually matches up the trades and makes the event happen. For those of us that are merely traders, we have an equally useful tool that not only makes our lives easier, but also those of the moderators. Jeff M (JeffyJeff) has created the On Line Want List Generator (OLWLG) that allows traders to very simply create want lists for the Math Trades.

As good as Jeff's tool is, its not easy to use for new users. This list is designed to help people make the most of this great tool, inluding how to use duplicate protection. I hope this list helps as many people as Jeff and Chris's creations have.

**WARNING*** There are big picture files in this Geeklist. Give it a moment to load properly.

After clicking on the Math Trad you want, you will be taken to a screen that looks like this:

This is the list of all entries in the trade, including your own. Every item that is in the trade Geeklist will be visible here, along with all the text that goes with it. Games that are highlighted in blue are games that you own. Games highlighted with yellow are on your Wishlist. Games Highlighted with green are on your Want in Trade list.

The green arrows open a new window that links to the BGG page for that game. On the right, you will see numbers which are for Rank, Rating, and Bayesian Rating, followed by the user that submitted the created the entry.

Just under the green arrows is a little "Add" button. When you click this button....

... this box appears!

In this box, you will see the words "Which of your games would you trade for XXXXXXX?". In this case, the game in question is Hansa. Under that, you will see all of the entries you have made in the Trade Geeklist. Simply put a checkmark next to the games you would be willing to trade for that particular game.

There is a box for Optional Value. This is for Math Trades that use Priorities. The higher the value means the more you want that particular item. So if its something you really want, put in a high number and make sure that every other entry you check off has a lower number. This will tell Trade Maximizer that you really want this game and that it should try to find a trade for this game before any others you want.

After you set the checks and the value, click Save and the Add button will turn into a little green checkmark. After you have done this for every entry you're interested in, you can click on "Click here to edit your wants" at either the top or bottom of the page.

Now that you've gone through Step 3 and selected which games you want, and which games you're willing to trade for them, its time for Step 4.

When you get into Step 4, you get to see everything you've selected in Step 3, plus everything you've entered that you're willing to trade for those games. The item is listed on the left with the name of the person trading it in green. To the right of that, there is one column for each game you're trading. If you've selected to trade a game for one of the entries on the left, there will be a check in the corresponding box. For example, on the first item in the picture below, I'm willing to trade either Goa or Hill 218 for that item. If I didn't want to trade one of those games, I could just remove the checkmark.

At this point, you can enter a value if you haven't already done so, and you can fine-tune which games your willing to trade by adding or removing checkmards in the boxes to the right. If you make any changes, make sure that you click on Confirm Changes on the bottom of the page.

Duplicate Protection

Most Math Trades now take advantage of a fabulous feature called Duplicate Protection. This allows users to make sure that they don't get more than 1 of any particular game. This is fully configurable by the trader, so if they want multiple copies, they can set it up for that to possibly happen.

In order to use Duplicate Protection, you must click on the blue menu option that says Duplicate Protection on the Step 4 & 5 page. You will then be taken to this page:

There are 2 sections on this page. Section 1 allows you to creat your own dummy item to be used for dupe protection. To do this, enter an alphanumeric identifier and a short description. The identifier should be something thats easy to remember.

In the second section, the OLWLG will create the dummy items for you, based on the games you've chosen as wants. Any games that are duplicates will show up in this list. You will see a blank checkbox, the game name, followed by an identifier, and then a total count of how many of that game you have selected as wanted. If you want to make these selection into dummy items, you need to put a check in each of the checkboxes. At the bottom of the list is a box which says "Check here to auto add corresponding game items to the pseudo items". This means you will then be able to add items to the dummy item through Step 3 instead of going back to this page. When you're done, click Submit.

Duplicate Protection Part 2

After creating dummy items, you'll be taken back to the Step 4 & 5 page, but the table displaying your wants will look different. You'll see extra columns along the top with green writing, and some of the rows will be red. These green columns are your dummy items and the red indicates that those rows have problems.

To fix these errors, you need to remove the checkmarks from any of the black columns in the red rows. In the picture above, I should remove the checkmarks from the Goa and Hill 218 columns for all the red rows. Once you've got all the checks removed from the black columns in the red rows, click "Confirm Changes" at the bottom of the page.

Duplicate Protection Part 3

Once you've gotten rid of all the red rows, you'll see some rows that now appear as grey and others that appear as green:

Grey rows signify that this item is part of a dummy item. In this row, the name of the game on the left should correspond to the green name of the column containing its checkmark. In this example, if you look up or down the list, you will see that the checkmark in the Railroad Dice row also corresponds to the green column of the same name.

The green rows are the actual dummy items. In these rows, you will choose which of your games you're willing to trade for that item. The dummy of Alhambra contains both items, but Trade Maximizer will only let me trade for one. So in the green row, you put a check in any of the black columns that you're willing to trade for it. If I only was willing to trade Alhambra for Hill 218, I would only put a checkmark in the Hill 218 column.

Again, after making all your changes, make sure you click on "Confirm Changes" at the bottom of the page.

When you've sorted out your Wants and you've got them in the order you want them in, click on the green bar that says "Official Format" at the top or bottom of the screen. When you do, you'll be taken to a page that looks like this:

All you have to do is copy all the text between the colored menu bars and paste it into a Geekmail to the person who is moderating the trade. Sometimes there is an option to use the OLWLG to send the list to the moderator, but this particular trade didn't have the option. I will add it the next chance I get.

Once you send off your Want Lists, you're done! You just have to wait for Trade Maximizer to work its magic and hope you get what you're looking for.
