These are the games coming out in 2008 I'm most anxiously awaiting to become available.

Why am I "jones'n" for these games? It may be the prototype photos in the database, the manufacturers description from their website or the fact that a game is finally getting a makeover/reprint after so long out of print.

What else should I be keeping on my radar?
Do you have a favorite or two that you will buy the instant it becomes available?
Is there some reason you will or won't buy a game on this list?

Add the games on YOUR radar and share why you want it so bad.

This is the inspiration for this list. I came across this company again and went to their website to watch some of the video tutorials on "making" their spaceships for the upcoming game Wormhole. Think Pirates of the Spanish Main in space with ships you cut out and put together.

Oh, one more thing... there looks to be an actual GAME here too!

I'm excited about this too, but it's gonna cost me more than $17. $60 for ink, unless I decide to get a color laser printer: that's a few hundred. Or I suppose I can get it printed at Kinko's for $1 a page (if I can convince them I have permission to print the material--I hope World Works includes that language in their pdfs?). Add construction time, and this is at least as much opportunity cost as a booster box of Pirates.

It's good value for money, but not that good...

I can get a whole set of ink cartridges (1 dbl black, 5 color) for my HP inkjet printer for about $35 (and get 8 AA batteries and a pack of 50 4x6 photopaper FREE from Office Max) and that will easily print up over a hundred color sheets at best quality. I don't know how many ship types are included, but I'm thinking I'll use AT MOST 1 ink cartridge set.

I'm still seeing this game as a total bargain.

I'm part of the beta team on this one. And I can assure you that the only comparison to the Pirates(CSG) game is that :

1. It is easily accessible
2. You build your own ships

There is a quite a good balance of fast moving and easy cinematic & tactically challenging game here. I hope you take the opportunity to try it out yourself, especially if you are space combat fan.

Hope to see some of you on the WWG_Wormhole forums!

Just LOOK at all those counters and pieces and components! The theme is something that has yet to be done and the little buzz I've heard about this gives me hope that this will be as good of a game as it looks.

David,

Yup, it's been tightened up. The majority of changes focused on minimizing the random elements so as to make your decisions more meaningful. A shorter variant has been added as well. The core of the game is unchanged; those who played it at BGG.con 07 played the final version, more or less, not including minor wording adjustments and card tweaks.

As for the posts asking about 2008... I can see with a good degree of certainty that it will be out this year. Mike Doyle has been moving forward with the art and I am hoping he will be done soon. I am not going to offer up promises of dates - and VG won't be either - but from what I can tell with respect to the progress behind the scenes, 08 is a good guesstimate. Let's put it this way... I'm going to BGG.con 08 and I sure as heck hope I'll be bringing a few of these bad boys with me.

Oliver

btw everyone - thanks for all of your compliments on my original art. I appreciate it as I really only dabble in graphic design; my wife is the real graphics genius in the family. Nonetheless, I'm a Leo, so enjoy the ego stroking. Heh.

2nd edit - also, forgot to mention. As far as I know, the above-linked box art is the final design. The 'techy' text might be changed to less specific stuff (it's currently HTML) but other than that, it's final.

A few lucky BBG'ers played this at BBG.con and the hype started in earnest at that time. The thing is, the hype looks well deserved for this one. I've yet to see anything negative about it and those that are praising it's virtues are far from what I would consider "fanboys".

I'm on a pre-order list already.

I played it once, so it's too early for conclusions, but I wasn't very impressed to be honest.

The system is good and well thought of, but it didn't have the "wow" factor for me.

Need to play it more to see if that feeling stays though.

So when you got the "plays games with wife" microbadge, it wasn't board games you were talkin' about, but hide-and-go-seek, eh?

Played a 'basic' game last week, but we're playing with the full complement of bits tonight. I'm hell of looking forward to it!

I have the original Avalon Hill version and found it to be very fun and entertaining with 2 or 3 people. More than that and the potential to drag on increases dramatically. This version is supposed to streamline play and simplify many of the more tedious aspects of the original version.

Due out very soon and I hope to pick one up at KublaCon.

I fear I'll get a little beating for not sharing your enthusiasm about this game as I am being an owner of the AH-version. I never really liked the game for several reasons though having played it numerous times (some friends of mine love the pirate-theme). But a new edition has the potential to cure some flaws of the AH-version like

- unplayable without player-aids; the numerous important charts were distributed over the whole rulebook and

- the components (like in many of Ah-games, which I am fond of nontheless) did not support the theme very well.

But I fear my main complaint about it will remain:
It was a cumbersome complex dicefest that blocked the view at the attractive pirate theme.
So maybe testing it if it fits your taste would be a good idea.
Hope you enjoy the game - more than I did

Being very briefly involved in the playtest of the new version I got a feel for the new version. It isn't as clunky as the old version. They went from the hex map to a sea zone style of board. They stylised the artwork more and it looks really sharp. I liked the origional but do agree it is a bit of a bear to play. The new version is much smoother and wont dissapoint.

So far, in three attempts, GMT has not successfully handled ANY of my preorders.

For this particular game, they've already screwed up my order twice.
(Once by doubling my order, then by deleting the order altogether when I tried to correct that error.) I've had it on order for more than a year now, but to their records it looks like I just got on the list a month ago.

I just hope mine COMES!

Very little word on this one yet but the description in the database is enough to make me want one:

Reins of Power is a huge board game of contemporary or near-future geopolitics, superpower diplomacy, and global conflict. Each player takes on the role of the head-of-state of a world power, from the US to the European Union, and attempts to steer this power to global supremacy. Each player also takes on the role of another player?s domestic political opposition and attempts to thwart that player?s every move. Execute regime change in Third World countries, combat terrorism, and project your power with carrier battle-groups. Expect lots of plastic figures, including carriers, submarines, tanks, and mushroom clouds, lots of cards, dice, markers, and other great components.

It sounds like a totally inproved and expanded version of Supremacy. I'm in.

I'm pretty sure I heard a rumor it's being M-rated and theme-tweaked into taking control of global economies by controlling the drug trade. The new name is Veins of Powder.

Actually I'm fairly sure the production hell of this title is caused by the dev team playing around with the name a million times....

This could be awesome - of course it could suck like that yellow vacuum on those infomercials too, but I'm hoping for the former not the latter.

"Age of Conan is going to be a massive board game where two or more players will lead the nations of the ?Hyborian Age?, the fantasy world created by Robert E. Howard, employing weapons, wealth or magic to achieve hegemony over the others. Developed by the same design team of the best-seller War of the Ring (Francesco Nepitello, Marco Maggi and Roberto Di Meglio), Age of Conan is planned to be released in late 2007 and will feature hundreds of beautiful plastic miniatures, a large full colour map of Hyboria, and top-level components."

I love Howard, I love Conan, and I have no problems with FFG, they make great games for RPG fans to slide on into without much problem... they don't always please other gamers though. This is easily my most anticipated game for 2008. Where's Solomon Kane or Bran Mak Morn? I'd buy those too... and, yeah, some of us did like Marvel Heroes. Weird game but our group had a blast with it.

Hmmm... Chariot racing is always good. This sounds like it will have militaristic, economic, political and entertainment aspects to the game. From the BGG description this should be out already. Anyone heard otherwise?

Well to start off with the bad news: there is no chariot racing in the game, and any militaristic, economic, political and entertainment aspects are very abstracted, i.e. different colored factions of which you collect cards. The good news however is that the game is already out (well, ok, the German version ) and it is still quite a good game that I at least am usually happy to play!

Whaaa aatt?! I see a Chariot RIGHT THERE! There's even two Roman Dudes in the driver's seat! That's just wrong - what the hell are those chariots there for? If there is no chariot racing - there SHOULD be! Sounds like I'm gonna have to make my own variant now...

The chariot will be auctioned; it protects the winner from being taken over in the next round. He puts it on one faction he controls to protect them. This is all. I have no clue why are there actually two chariots in the game. The guys you see are not part of the game, so this image must be categorized "creative".
Looking at the games you love, this set collection game will be too dry for you.

I'm not so sure Dan. I would put myself in a similar category of game preference to manowarplayer and I thought Tribune was a lot of fun. On paper it sounds very Euro and dry, however in action there's a lot going on. Player interaction is abundant and interesting. The multiple objectives necessary to win mean that no two players have to go after the same resources. The potential for screwage is also high. And finally the theme fits. While playing you do feel like the head of a Roman noble family jockying for influence.

I encourage every geek that likes good games to at least give Tribune a try. Now if only FFG would publish the damn thing...

Of course it's kind of lottery when I say that a player I don't know will love or hate a given game... so yes, even myself can't be sure if manowar will like it or not. I just found the probability was high enough to "warn" him or at least to set expectations lower.
Tribun is not a bad game but has the typical downsides AT-Lovers will criticise on this Euro.

I actually like both types of games.

To me the only quality that matters is if it's fun. I like the heavily themed American games that FFG and DOW puts out and I also like the Eurogames with interesting game mechanics and features that are unique. I no longer wear my AT badge due to the silliness that whole "debate" sparked.

I play a game to have fun.

Fantasy Flight's version is due this summer/fall. I'm really anticipating this one as Cosmic Encounter is one of my favorite games of all time. I loved Mayfair's version with it's organized rules (despite it's flaws) and tons of options that I could add or ignore as desired. Fantasy Flight is also known for outstanding components and artwork and my hope is that they deliver thei own "Mayfair Version" of the game, but with completely awesome components.

My fear is that they release their version of the "Hasbro Abomination" and it sucks as bad as that one did.

I am greatly anticipating this game as well, for a number of reasons. First, it will simply be yet another version for my collection (muhahhahaha). I'm hopeful that this will be an edition I am likely to take out to play as my own home made version (which, if I say so myself, is pretty damn excellent). I'm reallly hoping it breathes new life into CE in general. Anyway, I am sure the content on The Warp will still be applicable, and perhaps some folks will have new, crazy expansions of their own to add.

Bring them on.

The board tiles in the latest printing of the main game match those in the expansion. Only those from the first print run of LNOE are darker than the others.

I don't notice a difference in the cards.

My friend spoke to Zev on this one it may be released this year but not sure.

One of the new innovations is for the options available to the character of all choices, so you can insult everyone and sees what it earns you.

Additional paragraphs have been added from what I was told. Yes I want this especially if it spruced up from the original but how much am I willing to pay? Agri is at 70$ this might be up there if the pieces are at the same level.

Ambitious dates, though I become concerned when the blurb talks about "the period". The title sounds more Islamic than Christian, and "Godless" would fit better with 1135, and 1453, not to mention the 14th century. Memoir 44 has no machineguns, Combat Commander has no vehicles, so a lack of God would seem to follow the current trend. Lack of horses would too. Make it a nice and simple MMP game.

Ra: The Dice Game

I've been eagerly awaiting a database entry since I first read about this in a Valerie Putman column many moons ago. Ra isn't one of my favorite games but I think a dice-based spinoff has a lot of potential, and I'm guessing that the custom dice (c'mon, it's gotta have custom dice with pyramids and suns and stuff on them) will look extremely cool.

Indeed he did. So even if he hadn't designed Battleships Express, Pickomino, Exxtra, Risk Express and the Ra dice game, you'd still have to acknowledge the fact that he knows a thing or two about dice games.

Traded for the Warfrog version recently because I didn't think I'd see the VG version in my lifetime... however, knowing my luck, my doing so will probably help the rest of you see a VG version of this sooner rather than later. Also traded for Big City and Extrablatt... so trading for those 3 games will probably really help VG's pre-order numbers, heh.

Same here, I finally gave up and just bought a copy. It cost me $75 but that is probably close to what I would have to pay if I pre-ordered from Valley Games after shipping. I am glad I got the Warfrog version anyways, it will match the rest of my Warfrog stuff very nicely That being said "if" VG ever does reprint this I will pick up a copy.

I'm not sure whether this counts since it was released just this week, but I've been doing the Homer Simpson dance of impatience ever since it was announced last fall. Descent with shorter scenarios, outdoor adventures, avatars for the overlord, and a campaign mode for the heroes? Any one of those would have had me drooling, and this expansion is supposed to contain all that and more!

My order has to travel from one edge of the country to the other, since it's coming from Boards and Bits, so I won't see this until the end of next week at the absolute earliest. Ooohhh!

I've been very leary of getting into this game. With the release of this, I might get dragged in. I love Warhammer Quest. But, the play time of descent has been a turn off. Plus, I really like the between scenerio aspect of WQ. I hope this pulls all of Descent together. Or should I say I fear that it will.

I stumbled across this game in a forgotten geeklist. Oh how I hope it gets released. It looks so good and has a unique (sort of) theme. This game seems quite 'underbuzzed' but that's probably due to the lack of news from the publisher.

It's a great idea for a minis game.

That is one nice looking set-up!

To me this is the biggest appeal of a miniatures game - awesome scenery and fantastic miniatures to give the gameplay a unique and immersive feeling. A nice 3-d set-up can make even the most mundane of settings suddenly be interesting and exciting (not that that's what's happening here.)

Unfortunately that's not what comes in the box which seems to be cardboard cut-outs and stands (although miniatures are available). This picture
, of what seems to be an exhibit or show, gives an idea of the board. The game sounds fun from the rules though.

The publishers have decided to not include the miniatures in the starter box. Instead, it includes 20 character cutouts with description cards and a modular playing board. The miniatures can be purchased seperately, but at this time there are only two or three available. Still, I ordered it as a close quarters combat game, not a miniatures game and hope to playtest it this weekend.

No tongue biting required nor any indication of ineptitude. I just thought it was funny that there were two lesser Valley Games titles ("in the top 10") that preceded it (okay, maybe Supernova is not 'lesser known').

A solitaire game from Dan Verssen, who has designed many well known games, particularly solitaire titles, for other game companies (Hornet Leader, Modern Naval Battles, the 'Lightning' series, Naval Battles, and Road Kill, among others). This game will be published by his own company which appeared to previously be a DTP game company. A follow-up in the Field Commander series has just been announced: Alexander the Great.

I just ordered this one from wargamedepot.com. Are Dan's other solo games as simple to play as this one is?

In case you have missed it, take a look at http://www.gamepack.nl/gamepack/nuern-2008-index.html where they showcase many of the Nürnberg releases. Great work by the Gamepack guys, and a lot of really nice looking games there.

Are you trying to mess up my game buying moratorium Scott?! This list can only mean trouble.

Does it count if all I really want to buy is reprints? Those shouldn't count against my moratorium since they're not new games laugh

I just had to share Tom. playing Boardgames is like having a crack cocaine habit - some "friend" introduces you to them (the 1st one is free) and the next thing you know, your hanging out on BGG for the next fix.

I can only be held responsible for the 1st 8 or so too!

First off, why you taking my name in vein?

I'm not Jones'n for any game, just all of them. Why be picky?

But, seriously. There are so many fun games coming out (or getting delayed) that I'm letting them 'flow over me'. Kinda getting things as they come out and having time to think about the future.
