So I'm Red/Green color blind and there are games that I just cant play. There color dependent and use colors that look exactly the same. So I know there are other geeklists that show what game dont play well for color blind people. But i havent seen one for alternative to that game that have the same feel. So here is an attempt at that.

Please add to this list. I love playing games and the more i can play the better.

The Poster-Child game for the most unfriendly color blind game.

I am color blind and I had to ask my friend Doug on every turn "What color is this piece?"

Unplayable...I will never play again.

I bet bet this one must be agony. I had already been wondering why the producer had chosen such a set of colors for the horses. I'd have liked to have seen numbers embossed on them. So my suggestion for an alternative is to ink some numbers on the backs of the riders. And if you can't see the number on one of them, then that one is black !!

The problem was they decided to make all seven horses real horse colors (no orange, no pink), but since they are molded out of plastic they are all monochrome. They ended up with a black horse a white horse and five brown horses. Worse, the horses are plastic but the spots on the board where the cards sit are printed paper and the shades of brown just don't match. Piant numbers on them, paint one purple, or do something to your set to make the colors distinguishable.

As a hobbist designer, I need some advice from your side of life so that I can be sensitive to your needs when designing my games. I'm working on a commodities based trading game. I'm using colored cubes. So far I've got:

Red
Green
Silver
Yellow
Brown
Purple

My gut tells me that this game would be unplayable as is for a CB person, and that I should toss the red and green commodity colors and use black and white instead.

I'm still in the design stage, so changing colors is only a minor inconvenience.

My ultimate goal would be that a color blind person could play this game without hesitation due to color choice issues on my part.

Respectfully.

thank you for the geeklist.

one of my first rules of purchase. if i can't see the game pieces.....i don't care how good the game is, it does not get bought.
if they don't want to take the time to pick colors so i can play, then i don't need to spend my money on their game.

stay well,

jj

Thank you for thinking through the accessibility of your design for those with color vision deficiency. I have several posts on accessible design pointers when considering users who are colorblind. Just go http://colorvision.typepad.com and click on the category cloud tag for "accessibility."

VisiCheck is a good tool. I list several others among the posts in the blog.

Your color choices so far for the cubes are good. I recommend you make the brown, green and red as distinct from each other as possible. One in twelve of your male users will have a hard time distinguishing them. Black and white as choices would be a really good design move.
