Well it being only 4 weeks now till the 2nd UK Games Expo I thought UK Geeks might care to see what new games are going to be brought by the companies for you to try out. A number of these have their official release at UK Games Expo.

It is great to see the vast majority of the UK board game companies represented this year and I am looking forward to the chance to meet the designers and see the games I have been talking to them about for some months.

For more info on Expo (31st May and 1st June in Birmingham) go to:

Surprised Stare

From the publisher:

"In the Celestial Empire of the Ming Dynasty the leading families vie with one another for political power and influence over the Imperial government. They do not compete by brazen force of arms, but within the confines of Confucian philosophy. Subtle influence is wielded, gifts are given and received, setting up a network of relationships that will lead one family to dominate the government under a benign Emperor. Players of Confucius participate in this discreet and delicate struggle for power. As well as influencing the three principal ministries of government, leadership of the great exploration and trading fleets will bring renown to the one who heads them, and glory attends the general leading invasions of foreign lands."

I was able to playtest Confucius in the special sessions Surprised Stare organised at Essen last year. Lots of choices and options and I think it will need a few plays to work out a clear Strategy.

Ragnar Brothers

From the publisher:

"Monastery is a tile laying game in which players construct different parts of a medieval monastery. The work is done by the monks of a player. The monks may move from tile to tile and in addition to building work they can also study, toil or pray. In the ‘icon’ game monks can also make use of the special properties of some of the tiles.

The tiles vary in value ranging from 1 point field and path tiles to 5 point Chapter House and Library. The higher the value of tile the more monks are needed to build it. Players can build independently, but often they are required to work collaboratively.

The game spreads over two days of monastic life, with turns being allocated as time for study and toil or for services in the abbey. At each service a new abbot is elected and apart from going first in the turn the abbot also has some significant powers.

In order to win the game players must collect the letters of the abbey’s motto ‘Libera Nos Quaesumus Ab Omnibus Malis Amen’. The letters become progressively more expensive and players must decide whether to buy letters or recruit extra monks.

Points at game end are also awarded for the ‘blessings’ which players can collect throughout the game."

I have played this now once with a demo copy. Atractive looking game and interesting theme again with lots of choices to make.

Wattsalpoag (USA)

From the Publisher:

"You secretly assign your pickers and planters to the different orchards. Then everyone executes their actions. The people later in the round may get cut out of the fruit picking.
Next each person in order has a chance to send their fruits to the fair to win prizes (vp) or hire another worker.
After that who ever has the most fruit in each of the four types wins a special ability. The ability you can win with each fruit can change at the end of the turn. When there are only a certain number of prizes left the game ends and you add up your prizes and remaining fruit to see who wins.

Despite the name, no food fighting involved."

Wattsalpoag are coming over from the US to demo this new game of theirs.

Ludorum games

From the Publisher:

"Ice Flow is a strategic family game, interesting enough for gamers, as there are many tactical decisions to take.

Players race their explorers across the Bering Strait from Alaska to Siberia - riding ice floes, dodging polar bears, and collecting useful items on the way. The winner is the first player to arrive in Siberia with his three explorers intact."

I had a short look at this game at Essen as they were showing off the game still in its early stages. There is a preview article i did here:

Warfrog

From the Publisher :

"Tinners' Trail is set in nineteenth century Cornwall. You are mining for copper and tin, attempting to sell when the prices are high. To reduce the cost of mining you can place developments, such as ports, adits, and trains. Once you have made your money you invest it in industries outside of Cornwall, which gains you victory points. The earlier you invest the better the return."

I have played a demo version of this new Warfrog game. It has an intriuging Time track for actions that make choice of action interesting.

7. Board Game: Athene [Average Rating:6.83 Unranked]

JKLM

From the Publisher:

"With the unspeakable events of Troy behind them, the Greek Captains steer their ships for home. But Athene will not let these acts go unanswered and marshals the storm clouds as they have never been marshaled before, and nor will they be again. As the storm rises, and the currents take a greater and greater hold of your ship, can you steer your way home, or will you be swept into an inescapable whirlpool, or off the edge of the world?

Athene is a game for 3-6 players. The game is played on a grid of tiles. The tiles start off as calm seas, and players play cards to control the movement of their ship. But as the game progresses, the tiles are turned over to reveal the currents, and the players have less and less control of where their ship goes. The longer a ship stays at sea, the more valour the captain will earn, but ultimately you have to get home before the seas become unsurvivable and your ship is lost."

I have not seen this game yet although the little video on the JKLM site looks good. A demo of this will be available at Expo.

JKLM Games

From the Publisher

In Huang Di, you play a master builder chosen by the Emperor (Qin Shi Huang) to help construct one of the greatest man-made structures in the world... The Great Wall of China. Your goal is to become the most distinguished master builder in China with the help of your taskmasters, workers and Qin Shi Huang himself!

In the game, all players use identical decks of role cards in which to plot their actions such as purchasing workers, building, collecting money from the treasury, etc. In addition to scoring points for having built the majority of blocks on each level of the wall, players can also boost their income by completing favors for the Emperor.

This game won the first ever ProtoSlam competition held by Cambridge Games Factory in August 2006 and is the first published game by designer, Bryan Johnson.

Identity Crisis (Ible Dibble Industries)

Below the displayed word on the category card are ten clues about the identity of the person, object, place or animal which the player has to learn in order to work out their identity. The ten facts are in ascending order of detail. i.e. facts numbered 1 to 5 tend to be more obscure than higher numbered facts, with facts numbered 9 and 10 being more explicit about the person, place, object or animal.

To learn a fact, each player throws a ten sided die and moves their marker clockwise around the board in the hope of landing on a square which will either allow them to ask a question about their identity or will result in the other players reading aloud to them, a numbered clue about themselves from the card.

The board consists of different types of squares with different instructions that players follow after landing on them
