Want a copy of a Flamethrower? Here's a DIY Guide

I don't know if it is some kind of late onset dyslexia or just too much Combat Commander: Europe recently, but when I read the title to http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/31264 "Want a copy of Flowerpower? Here's a DIY Guide", I somehow read it as a list to make a flamethrower.

Man, was I disappointed. Although an excellent presentation of an equally excellent home project by Steve the Stormseeker, the little domino-like pieces with flowers on them were far from the manly-man images I had mistakenly thought I would see.

But freshly inspired, I set out to create my own DIY project.....

my very own flamethrower, BGG style.

Okay, first you need the tanks. These are the cylinders that hold the petrol (flammable liquid) and the pressurized gas. I chose to just go with two, though the old school US military flamethrowers used three - two for petrol and one for nitrogen gas that propelled the petrol.

You can make these quite easily with the handy new Bang the Bullet cases. Simply open up the case, pop out the card holding insert,

and reassemble.

Next, you need the frame for the backpack.

For this you need the board from Tumbling Dice.

Flip it over with the backside up and the low level landings toward the top. Lay the Bang Bullets on the exposed back of the board.

Now you need to mount the Bullet cylinders to the frame. This is easily accomplished by first cutting the Hamsterrolle in half as shown:

Now screw the half circle to the frame. The Bullets magically snuggle right into the gaps of the Hamsterrolle black braces (fences) and are held firmly in place.

With the cylinders secured, now you complete the backpack assembly by attaching the straps.

Remove the suspenders from your Ants in the Pants game and staple them to the back of the Tumbling Dice board, running the suspenders up through the gaps between the lower landings and then looping back down around to back side. This should form nice shoulder straps for the backpack (though you may want to paint them as pink is not commonly seen on flame throwers).

5. Snifty Snakes [Average Rating:6.64 Unranked]

Now you need a flexible tube to deliver the petrol to the nozzle. Again, BGG readily supplies the needed parts.

Take a Snifty Snake (the green one works well as you can get cool Army green without the need to paint) and cut off the hose just below the nose and then cut off the snake head at the other end.

You might be saying, "why can't I just grab my snake and shoot the hot fluid directly out from it". Well, as you can see from this close up

the snake's mouth is a pretty irregular orifice. Without good symmetry, the petrol could spray out in unpredictable patterns - not good when you set it afire.

Up next, you need to assemble the gun tube. You can do this by connecting tees from Pipeline in a straight line (again, using the green ones saves the need for painting).

For this step you need to drill out the 'insertion' ends of the tees to allow the liquid to flow. The drop legs of the tees handily act as grips for the gun tube. Be sure to put these plugs

in the drop legs though or you'll end up shooting petrol down your pant legs (I found that out by mistake).

At the end of the gun tube, you need a nozzle. This can be found in your Pop-o-matic Trouble game (what a great dice randomizer - so much more effective than dice towers - I wonder why you don't see them at ASL tournaments?) Anyway, just pop one of the pieces (green) into the end of your tube and you are set.

And finally, you need something to ignite the petrol.

For old school flame throwers, you need a pilot light. This is simply accomplished using the candle from Waldschattenspiel.

For a newer style flame throwers, you need an electronic ignition. You can do this by taking the Taboo buzzer

apart and removing the speaker. Then position the wires that went to the speaker in such a way that they shorten out against each other when the buzzer button is pushed.
