These evenings are starting to go by too fast. After beginning the first game, it seems to be only a flash before we are playing our last filler of the night (usually For Sale) and a foreboding few hours of sleep and a full day of work are before me. I almost find myself fretting about the evening being over even before it starts in some weird twisted way. It's kind of like going on vacation and being distracted the entire time because you know it will be over eventually. Is this the downard spiral a typyical board gaming addict inevitably descends into? :D

This was an unusual one to start the evening out with. We usually begin with something light, quick, and interactive as people are arriving. But tonight, Larry, Tim, Nate, and I shut everyone else out and began with this heavier AP prone game. Larry was the only one who had played before and it showed. He owned the game after the first round as the rest of us hadn't grasped how to maximize efficiency on our turns until the second round and by then it was impossible to catch him.

I'd like to play this again. I set myself up for total disaster. Visually the AP seemed due to the graphics somehow. This game was far deeper than I expected. I thought it was going to be a brisk Kramer game, but there was some serious decisions in this one.

That's because the new graphics make this board hard to read (impossible if you are on the opposite side of the board, i.e. it's upside down to you).

Craig, Steve, and Wade went for this one next to us and were just as quiet and anti-social in their game as we were in ours. I think it was Craig's first game and he picked up quickly and won soundly.

Anyone else have an early brown patron stategy end up in such a resounding victory?

Fortunately, the third group which consisted of Beth, Smilie, Mrs. Smilie, Joe, and Shannon added some balance as they vociferously engaged in this game in the other room. Shannon demonstrated her knack for Viking civilization and dominated the game, but afterwards it was discovered she had accidentally played with an extra piece giving her an unfair advantage.

Yeah, she actually said that after the cops came, she was unmasked, and we all had some scooby snacks.

Well, I'll be calling him/her that now. Although I think Lil' Smilie has a better ring to it.

Well, this isn't actually what was played, but instead a yet unnamed homebrew with a Mayan theme. This was the first of two homebrews created by newcomer Nate that were played. Allan, Nate, and Wade played this one and Allan edged Nate, the designer, by one point while Wade brought up the rear.

He needs to add this to the Geek. This game is pretty cool, and feels just about done. It's a good sign when I'm thinking about it a few days later. We serious gamers didn't quite get that the theme is kind of tongue in cheek as you play rituals to change the Mayan calender and mess with people's harvests. It's pretty unique and I think many, many euro gamers will love it.

It looked really, really cool, and I hope that someday I'll get a chance to be in on it.
