This past weekend I got some people together at my place for a full day of gaming. Much fun was had by all, and as is my wont, decided to put together a GeekList commemorating the occasion.

Donna showed up a little early thanks to public transportation actually running efficiently for once, so we got out Mr. Jack until some other people showed up. I won this one by using Goodley to separate Miss Stealthy (Jack) on turn 3 and then escaping with her on the first move of turn 4.

Adam arrived near the end of Mr. Jack, and we started to set up Clans, but when Jeffery got there, we switched to this instead. This was a tightly-fought game, with some attempts at making territory stymied by the cramped board. Donna managed to make a twelve point territory (around an oasis!!!), but Jeffery pulled out the win. I believe the final scores were:

Jeffery 60
Donna 58
Matt 55
Adam 50.

TtD nicely achieved our goal of killing half an hour or so until James showed up, at which point we got this out. With 5 players, profession cards were scarce and Recruiting cards were fought for hard. Most of us completed 5 works, and in the final tally, James edged me by a point with his two prestige cards.

Donna, Adam, and James went to get lunch, so Jeffery and I set up Railroad Tycoon and then played 3 games of this. I got beaten in a close game once and then trounced soundly twice. The second game I at least had this tremendous trade engine (I was selling a novelty good off the pirate world for 10 cards!!) but I devoted too many cards to the engine and not enough to, you know...scoring points. I'll figure this game out sooner or later.

Luckily, my dining room table was just big enough to hold the board, but we had to set up a second table to hold the cards and such. James and I set up in the Northeast. I had from about Boston to Baltimore, though James eventually built extra links up to Philly and New York and then had everything south. Adam took the southeast, Donna grabbed the Wheeling-Memphis area, and Jeffery started by building Toronto-Detroit to grab the Service Bounty to Toronto that came up in the opening card draw, then went west to Chicago. I jumped out to an early lead by somehow grabbing all of the starting bonus cards. I later jumped down and built from Atlanta to New Orleans to grab the Mobile service bounty, and James jumped out to the Chicago area, but for the most part, we just built outward from our starting areas - there were almost no deliveries along shared routes. I think the Railroad Executives went cheap this game - start player those turns went for 2,000 and 3,000, I think. Hotels played a big role - Adam was getting 5 and 6 points in a single delivery with the help of his Charleston hotel. James was making some 7-point deliveries by the end, digging into my lead pretty fast. I avenged my loss in PoF by edging James by a point with my Tycoon card. Sweet sweet justice. :) Another very close game - all of us were within about 10 points at the end.

Jon got off of work and came by near the end of RRT, and this was about the only thing we had for 6 players that fit in the necessary timeframe. James ended up winning, but that relatively unimportant. I think what really matters are the fond memories we all have of the horses from this game - Fleet Counter, Garbage Butt, and ah yes...sweet sweet Bushes. Of course, memories are all we have left of them, because they've long since been shipped off to the glue factory after their horrible performances in these races. But I can still hear Bushes' plaintive cry... "Why won't you love me, Donna?"

Jeffery had to go then, so we were back down to 5 and got out Power Grid. We used the Germany map, without the brown region I think - the one in the northeast. We spread ourselves out nicely - me in the north, Adam in the west, Donna in the east, James in...um...those two central cities with no connection fee between them, and Jon in the south. I was happy with my position early, grabbing the size 4 nuke plant (the only nuke plant in the game at the time), but I could never quite pull the trigger on the auctions for the higher capacity plants. Jon had similar problems. Adam and James both had good capacity at the end, but I think maybe paid a little bit too much for it, allowing Donna to make a big push for 15 cities at the end and win.

Adam and Donna needed to go after Power Grid, leaving me, James, and Jon. We opted for PR (and pizza.) Jon went heavily into indigo and shipped a ton, having somewhere around 30 VP chips by the end, IIRC. James and I went for diversification and factories. I got a harbor and earned some good points off of it, and edged James out to get to the Guild Hall first, leading me to the win.

WE FINALLY PLAYED HERMAGOR!!!!! 'nuff said. Well, almost - Jon won, about 20 bucks in front of me and James. I haven't played this much (clearly) so I can't offer much in the way of analysis, other than that I like the idea of least cash on hand determining start player. Turn order in the market phase seems too important to make quasi-random.

Just found this list.

It was a very fun day. All of these games were very enjoyable. It was great to play some of these classics with a different set people than I normally play with. I learned many new strategies from the ones I normally play with. Thanks again Matt for hosting.
