Now, I've yet to create a GeekList that really strikes a chord here on BGG... and that is ok. However, I have a BGG goal this summer. So here I go again.

In my enthusiastic, though short, experience in the board gaming world, I have come to love many things about board games, but for many games I come to really enjoy certain specific mechanics or aspects. Now, I am not talking about generic mechanics, i.e. "I like auction games." I am talking about specific game mechanics that really make players say, "Now that is pretty cool...."

So I'm going to start a list, by no means all encompassing, of specific gaming mechanics that really stand out to me. I encourage all BGGers to add their items and tell why they enjoy said mechanic.

Edit: WOW! surprise I just want to say a big THANKS to all the contributors and comments added to this GeekList! This has truly been a lot of fun watching one of my first GeekLists really take off! ONE BIG thumbsup FOR ALL OF YOU!

The trigger mechanism is verrrry cool.

Instead of rolling dice (in combat, for instance), a player determines a random outcome by flipping the top card of his deck and reading the two little dice printed in one of the bottom corners.
In most cases you just read your result, apply it and keep playing.
But sometimes the dice are surrounded by a red border (that indicates a trigger) and a word (that shows just what sort of trigger it is: Time, Jammed, Sniper or Event).

Each of the four possible triggers does something special (and usually bursting with fun and tension) to the game, but what's important here is the way a specific die roll -- say, 9 -- can do nothing on one turn, and become a trigger on the next (if the second roll of 9 says "Trigger" whereas the first one didn't).

You can't do that with a CRT, unless you use dice of different colors and a list of cases and exceptions. The trigger system in Combat Commander just works wonders.

Pre-Programed Actions.

Most strategy games require you to plan ahead, but RoboRally is one of the few that locks you into that plan for the next five "turns".

If you set up your registers correctly your plan will pay off and your robot will end up exactly where you want it to be.

On the other hand, if you miscalculated and/or another robot knocks you off your path, you may have to endure an entire round of watching your robot bounce aimlessly off a wall. Or worse, you might have to watch in horror as it strolls carelessly along into a pit of doom...

Mechanic: Look at your cards, then make those features happen on the board.

This mechanic is what first attracted me to Masons and still keeps me playing.

Essentially, you have a hand of cards displaying different features. In the middle of the table, you have a board that represents a community building project. If you can get the features on your cards to appear on the board in a valuable way, you can earn a lot of points during scoring rounds.

The board is always changing as everyone builds components, attempting to get their own card features to happen on the board. And to make it even better, there is a great "help the loser" mechanic for getting rid of a bad hand of cards.

I haven't seen this mechanic implemented anywhere else. Thanks, Mr. Colovini!

I really like the combat mechanism in Silent Death. You roll three dice to see if you hit your target (the first two dice depend on the weapon, the third dice is based off your gunnery skill). If you hit you then use some of all of the dice roll to determine damage.

I like the use of better dice for more skilled crew instead of a die roll modifier. Damage determination is also quick since you don't need to roll another set of dice.

I love the luckless Combat system in Dune.

In a nutshell, a battle occurs if two players have troops in the same region. Each player will secretly decide how many of their troops to commit to battle. The player who chooses the highest number totally wipes out all of the other player's troops. However, each troop that the winning player committed to battle will also die. Thus, each player tries to figure out what is the fewest number of guys they can commit to beat the other player, but have a sufficient force left to defend the territory next turn, collect spice, etc.

Toss in Leaders and Treachery cards, not to mention special faction-only combat powers, and you get the most innovative combat system in any game, ever.

There were several mechanisms which I thought was cool when Catan first came out:

The one that stood out the most was Random Board Setup. I loved trying to pick that best spot for my settlements. Surprisingly, this has not been copied by that many other games.

I also thought the order of selection of the settlements to be quite nice (1-2-3-4-4-3-2-1).

I also like the Earn Resources even when it is not your turn mechanic.

For those of you who don't know (if there are any), there is a small bell included in the game, that helps you keep the track of the turn rounds, and also you are obliged to ring it when a turn ends (because a mass is called at that time and all the monks attend it).
Also, you can get a penance if you forget to move it, which is evil angry

The tower. How cool is that? You basically throw your and your opponents cubes into a tower, which has two levels inside of it, with a lot of big holes. Some cubes stay in the tower and can fall out of it, and that means for example, that the local farmers are going to help the defender against the agressor! Simple, yet how effective!
