Calvin - When I was growing up I always thought that my imagination was a little out of control. That is until I started reading Calvin & Hobbes comic strip. The hilarious antics of the most imaginative kid in the world are still my favorite comics to read.

Linus van Pelt - There was something about Linus that always seemed to connect with me. I felt like he was my long-lost brother or something. His wisdom was amazing for his age, and yet the never-ending struggle to keep his blanket played a humorous contrast to that wise character.

You know you're going to end up with at least 5 Peanuts characters on this list, right? Schulz is the flat-out, all-time master of the 4 panel gag, and produced consistently for 50 years.

I thought about going with Good Ol' Charlie Brown, but the dog-lover in me has to pick the pooch of a thousand personalities, Snoopy.

Anyone who's ever out in Northern California, check out the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa - they have a huge scuplture of Snoopy's transformation from Schulz's family dog, through early depictions of him, to all of the weird and wacky personas - WWI Flying Ace, Joe Cool, Vulture, Golfer, Hockey Player, Tennis Star, Ice Dancer, Famous Author, etc. Beautiful . . .

Howland Owl, from Walt Kelly's Pogo. Pogo gets my vote for the greatest comic strip of all time, due to its incredible combination of wit, relevance, irrelevance, and artwork. I'm fond of "ol' Owl" in part because he reminds me of me: he's pompous and likes to pretend he knows a lot about everything, but he's not a bad guy if you can get past all that.

ANDY CAPP

Andy Capp has done more for the cause of anarchism than Kropotkin, Bakunin, and Proudhon combined. Andy tosses aside bourgeois conventions, preferring instead to live a fuller, richer life that is only possible once you have escaped the shackles of modern economic and social expectations. In fact, Andy Capp is a manifestation of the classic Trickster figure. Unlike the character depicted in Castaneda, Andy's visions of existential and spiritual freedom are ignited by beer instead of peyote buttons.

TARZAN

If not for Burne Hogarth's version of Tarzan, countless men would have lacked the confidence to begin careers as professional dancers. Throughout the recurring tableaux of noble savagery, Tarzan showed a fluid, muscular grace that only a Fosse, Tharp, or de Mille could only dream of accomplishing. Gene Kelly is rumored to have based his famous dance number with Leslie Caron in An American in Paris on Hogarth's depiction of a battle between Tarzan and a bull ape.

Pogo is my favorite strip, with Calvin & Hobbes probably second, but a very close third is Krazy Kat. Hunt up books of collected strips if you've never seen them - they're very special. It's not easy to make a single joke last thirty years, but Herriman succeeded at it.

Ignatz Mouse is probably my favorite character in the strip, though I love Krazy, too.

Barnaby by Crockett Johnson. Favorite character in the strip, Mr. J. J. O'Malley, Barnaby's fairy godfather. Gosh!

This strip is not well known today - it was at its height in the 1940s, and ended in the 1950s. Ballantine and Dover have both released collections of some of the strips. The basic plot is a young boy, Barnaby, who wishes for a fairy godmother after hearing some fairy tales, but gets a fairy godfather, instead. A cigar-smoking, flim-flamming, windbag of a fairy godfather, who utters Cushlamochree! at anything even mildly surprising. Barnaby's down-to-earth neighbor Jane, about his age, is a regular, as are his talking dog, Gus the Ghost, Barnaby's parents (who have never managed to meet Mr. O'Malley or hear the dog talk, oddly enough), McSnoyd, the obnoxious and invisible leprechaun, and a whole series of trolls, giants, witches, bankers, politicians, policemen, criminals, etc., etc. A marvelous strip - hunt down the first five Ballantine editions if you can.

Crockett Johnson is probably best known for his children's book, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Harold looks a lot like Barnaby, BTW, but the Barnaby strip is clearly best enjoyed by adults.

Then there was The Boondocks. Biting sarcasm, social commentary and left leanings that makes Trudeau look like a Reagan supporter. And all from two young boys who moved to the suburbs from the inner city as their grandfather wanted to provide them a better home.

This was not an easy strip to read all the time as McGruder pulled no punches or left anyone doubting his interpretation of racial tensions in this country. Huey, the lead character, always tries to do what he believes is right and is constantly fighting mass media for control of his little brother's brain. I watched the cartoon for a while, but it never really proved itself better than the strip though.
