To introduce myself a little:

I am Joe (real name) from Slovakia, Central Europe. Age 28, crawling to thirties already. I have joined BGG in April 2008 and am slowly crawling through the deep waters. And I must say that I would have missed BGG if I had not joined... Is a paradox, isn't it?

Boardgames (apart from other "games") have interested me for a long time. But I have not been a collector of them, rather a casual player (because I owned quite none and also had not many friends to play with).

That changes slowly and I have jumped on the BGG-train already. Still in the backwagons yet, but I keep progressing slowly.

Main reasons for this slow progress are the lack of money, lack of players around and not-so-good accessibility to all games I would like to have. And foremost, there is the language issue - most of my friends cannot speak english so I have to resort to games, that are either text-free or that I have translated. Or which are localized into Czech/Slovak (if not even created that way).

This geeklist will mark my progress through the sheer volume of games out there and I will list games here, which I either:

* have already (and played)
* look inquiringly upon to get them soon
* look longingly upon and might not get (if nothing drastic happens)

Please share your ideas or comments, anything is welcome!

Marking the ticket now...

OWNING

This is a Czech game which our parents bought on an occasion some years back. It plays quite well, is not anywhere hard and you can invite some friends to it (up to 4 players, 2 on 2 cooperatively, or 2 players versus each other).

I have played it numerous times and enjoyed. It is not a breakthrough but in its time for me it was a good game (still is a filler of sorts, mainly with new players or kids).

I literally stole it from our parents house and it now resides with me cool (shhh, do not tell them that!).

HAVE ACCESS TO

A classic. Played this with my family when I was younger and it may well come again on the table someday.

Not in my possesion though, my parents have that one. I have a local spin-off called "Investor" (listed below) which is quite the same with localized fields and cards and stuff.

I think it is a good game for a party/family with much player-interaction. Elimination is there of course, but you can always team up with another player when you fall out of it.

I am glad I played it, because it can teach you to think tactically a bit.

HAD ACCESS TO, NOW SEARCHING

A nice and interesting game, in the style of Scotland Yard. My parents bought this a loong time ago and I must say it was a good buy.

I remember the playing of this one with my family members and having fun tracking the agent through the severs.

Unfortunately the whereabouts of this piece are unknown as I lost track of the game (was not "mine" so it was stored in my parent's house).

I would very much like to find it somewhere. Oh boy, I would like to play it again....!

HAVE ACCESS TO

My family has a localized Slovak version of Scrabble. We played on some occasions but I do not remember most of them. Maybe because Scrabble left me with mixed feelings - not enough characters when you need them and a board that can get stuck in a few unsuccesful turns...

May be a good filler sometimes, but I would play different games when I could.

But, is a classic and I got through it.

Now to some newer games.

Icehouse (Treehouse) caught my attention somewhere. Do not really remember where exactly, just that I was instantly interested. Few pieces, fast gameplay, interesting in that many games can be played with the pieces. And storable - fits in a bigger pocket.

I had to have it!

Currently (July '08) I have 3 Treehouse sets (2 Rainbow, 1 Xeno) and will get more (at least to the full Icehouse complement - 5 full Treehouse sets) so that I can try the original Icehouse and many more - namely Homeworlds.

I recommend this either as a filler game with new players, in a bar or restaurant while waiting for food, or when drinking with friends. Or you can play the more serious games (if you have sets enough) and get more involved.

Do you honestly think this has to be missing in my list?

Weeeel, it is not!

In fact this is the first game I have selected upon initially searching BGG for a decent party game for my friends this year. I have searched in shops in my vicinity and weighed more choices (for instance Trans America / Europe or Ticket to Ride) and in the end selected this.

I must say my wife does not find it that interesting but my friends play it and like it. My father for instance said that it is a good relaxation game as you do not have to think too much and just enjoy. (Strategists and tacticians, go hide in the corner for now cool ).

I agree with him and simply enjoy the wins and loses I get.

This is a must-have for an entry-level gamer.

This has come to my peri-scope as I searched for freely available games that I could print-out and play.

I printed it and played a session, ending in 3rd round as I could not pay the needed money. But this is a promising solitaire game (being reworked right now) which also got two nice-looking redesigns (kudos, linael and TGov!).

I am planning to re-print it in color, laminate possibly (or attach to some wooden blocks) and play...

Recommended!

This game amazed me. Again a free print-out-and-play. It has qualities that I have yet to dig out (played only the Basic rules and only as a Solo game to test the mechanics).

With more players it will be fun, I am sure of it!

I recommend for every Sci-Fi fan out there, which cannot afford Twilight Imperium or a similar game.

And of course someone who has time to put all this together. It is too fiddly to play with plain-paper-cutouts

OWNING - Medieval warfare Deck (translated to Slovak)

I discovered this while searching for a free card game some years ago. It appealed to me, mainly the concept and I translated one of the decks to Slovak (and re-themed it with pictures on the cards, creating a custom set, which is pending approval now).

I find it an interesting game even in 2 players, because there is a lot of interaction and things going on and lots of strategies to win.

Definitely worth looking at and even printing out. Sleeve-and-play!

Yes, yes, I know. Is for children. And their parents.

Well, maybe. But I recall playing UNO the last time when I was a kid (hehe) with my godparents and I liked it.

It is not a "geek" game, but it is a good party game and/or filler. Therefore I just bought it in my Italy vacation a week ago and plan to bring it to the table with my wife/family/friends.

Period.

PLAYED BUT DO NOT OWN - ON (silent) WISHLIST

I really like Tikal. You can tell by my comments on the game and from my review. That sums it all up.

Tikal is on my silent wishlist because I do not know HOW I will get around to buying it and WHO would play it with me. There are many games before Tikal I would buy, just for the sake of "playiness" with my surroundings.

But Tikal will wait for me somewhere...

When I sought the next game to add to my collection, I had a tough decision to make between Agricola, Galaxy Trucker and Pandemic.

Pandemic won because of its cooperative nature (making it "different" from my owned games) and also becasue I like the game much.

So now it sits on my shelf and quite regularly also on my table!

This was actually the second game I bought back in 2008 and still remains one of my most favorite, mainly because it is light and easy to teach, yet has a nice fun factor for me and the players around. Not to say that it is beautifully presented - with the plastic train wagons!

I would never get rid of this and I am considering buying the 1912 expansion!

This was actually my wife's suggestion

She is a no-gamer, as she hardly even played Stone Age with me once or twice (and sometimes we play Rummy). These games are probably the only ones that appeal to her - party games, when we have a group for visit.

I must say I dislike various Party games for various reasons (I am in no mood to "come with names" or "stand on your hands" or "make a ring and dance" or something like that) and I can tolerate Activity 2 for what it is - it is quite fun to play with your teammate and come up with explanations that he has to guess.

This, my friends, is the Crowning Jewel of my collection!

I cannot say enough praises for the game (even if I almost never get it to the table!) - its intricate depth, lots of choices, huge replayability and many strategies.

Too bad that the local publisher, who has done the original game in Czech (Albi), will not do any expansions (I hope only for now!). I have heard that it does not sell well in Czech/Slovak Republic and I can understand that, as it is a heavier game than just a "pick-up and play", like the other localized titles from that publisher.

But if no translations will come, I am thinking about purchasing the english expansions in the future and maybe sleeve then, adding translated texts where necessary.
