I've started collecting Cheapass Games games and I thought it might be fun to collect them all ... in a geeklist. Feel free to comment and I'll try to update these as I find out more information. I'll also try to track down bibliographic information and any other relevant stuff so that this can be (more or less) definitive.

For those of you who don't know, Cheapass Games is a company started by James Ernest of Seattle (Washington) that specialized in cheap games. Because many board games use the same types of parts over and over, Cheapass assumes you can find dice, pawns, cards, etc., and just provides you with the rules and maybe a paper board. But there's a lot of creativity in these "cheap" games, and ... definitely fun.

The Cheapass Games Double-Secret Web Site is at http://www.cheapass.com.

When I started collecting, I noticed that most of the games had a CAG number in the corner. CAG is obviously Cheap Ass Game.

Here's a list of CAG numbers and the games they identify. Links in the CAG list go the BGG games wherever allowed by law.

The geeklist below will attempt to cover random information about each game and is ordered alphabetically by name. The information will be in this order:

1. Short personal description of the game
2. Number of players
3. What the game requires that is not included (dice, money, etc.)
4. CAG number
5. Series (if the game is part of a series)
6. Version information (if any)
7. Any other information

This is a BGG Geeklist, so I'm working with what is currently in the database. So for releases like Button Men, there is only one item, even though there are many CAG numbers.

For Cheapass Games series, such as Friedays, the most important game (usually the first) will list the other games in the series.

Because I'm trying to make this a ludography, I've locked the ability to add items, but feel free to comment.

Other Cheapass geeklists for talking about Cheapass Games:

I want to thank James Ernest, who was able to look over an early draft of this list and fill in a few holes. But all the mistakes are mine.

The original was published in 1998, but later Cheapass published this game in the "style of our newer Hip Pocket Games, with the same low 1998 price". But there isn't a new CAG number, and it is not an official member of the Hip Pocket Games club.

Red Glove (http://www.redglove.it/) produced a charming version of the Big Cheese.

Jon Wilkie is listed as a co-designer along with James Ernest.

This game was originally called Jump and appeared in the Origins 2000 preregistration program book. Later this thrilling game appeared in Chief Herman's Holiday Fun Pack.

Robin Hood has helped the poor by robbing the rich. But the merchants of Sherwood want to remove this new-found wealth from the "poor". A card game with bidding.

CAG 004

Originally sold in a paper edition, but later became free if you ordered $10 worth of games from Cheapass Games. Now just a free PDF download.

This quote says it all, in the usual blunt Cheapass manner: "Bleeding Sherwood was one of the first Cheapass Games to fall under the axe, in part because of players’ reluctance to play as we expected them to, in part because of poor reviews from game critics who didn’t know any better, and mostly because it didn’t sell very well."

3-7 players.

Requires: a deck of playing cards with no Jokers.

Part of the Frieday's game series.

This game was originally a limited edition game made up in August 1998 from cards left over from a badly-sorted print run of Give Me the Brain!. Later a more intesting version with a deck of playing cards was included in Chief Herman's Holiday Fun Pack.

This game is available free from Cheapass Games.

This game originally appeared in the program book of ShoreCon 2000. It later appeared as a bluffing game in Chief Herman's Holiday Fun Pack.

You are a member of an explorer's club. Rather than go to the hardship of actually going on a polar expedition, you sneak around London and search for artifacts that you can use to prove you actually went somewhere. But watch out for Captain Park, who is an even bigger fake than you. If he sees you, you're in trouble.

3-7 players.

Requires: one pawn and several counters for each player, two more pawns, and a way to keep score.

Caution: do not use this map to navigate your way around the real city of London!

Racing frogs is always fun, but it's even more fun if your frogs are made out of Legos. May the best frog win!

2-6 players.

Requires: a set of Legos or other similar building blocks, a lily pad, and two six-sided dice. You need to assemble 7 distinct frogs and two frog rakes.

This game appeared as a free download from the Cheapass Games web site but was removed (by the estate of Mark Twain or the Lego Corporation or some other good reason) and later appeared as part of Chief Herman's Holiday Fun Pack.

Of course you all remember that Mark Twain wrote a story called "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" and you can read it here.

The second is a silent auction with buckets of money. The third is a battle game using money. Things are never dull at Friday's.

2-8 players.

Requires: everything you need is included in the game.

CAG 025

Part of the Frieday's series.

The main game component is money, beautifully illustrated by Brian Snoddy. And you could always play for real money.

Chief Robert W. Herman, the world's most unusual game collector, has gathered more than thirty games from the Cheapass Game company vault. Most of them were available free and all of them are games. Also includes a ludography of the games of James Ernest that he created from 1997 through 2000 for Cheapass Games as well as several games for other publishers. And better still, a game design article written by James Ernest called "Keep It Simple". But wait, there's more. You get an article explaining the order of poker hands. And last, but not least, you get running commentary from Chief Herman himself.

Number of players varies with each game.

Requires: Five 4-sided dice, twelve 6-sided dice, 9 8-sided dice, one 20-sided die, a handful of pocket change, 72 colored counters, a deck of playing cards with Jokers, 360 poker chips, 500 index cards, 10 player pawns (of Null-A), one master pawn, assorted plastic building blocks, construction paper, a chess set, a 3-minute timer, a bowl of candy, two colored pencils, and a score pad. But not all at once.

Article:
Which Came First? (James Ernest)

There are many seriously good and/or funny games in this collection.

I particularly like the story description for Board Game Project #55:

There is no story for Board Game Project #55. Okay, if you must, an army of radioactive and cancer-resistant rats have escaped a secret underground laboratory near Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska, leaving behind a detachment of four wirey, intellectual mice to guard the facility and kill anyone who enters. Bored, the mice invent this game.
