I've started collecting Cheapass Games games and I thought it might be fun to collect them all ... in a geeklist. Feel free to comment and I'll try to update these as I find out more information. I'll also try to track down bibliographic information and any other relevant stuff so that this can be (more or less) definitive.

For those of you who don't know, Cheapass Games is a company started by James Ernest of Seattle (Washington) that specialized in cheap games. Because many board games use the same types of parts over and over, Cheapass assumes you can find dice, pawns, cards, etc., and just provides you with the rules and maybe a paper board. But there's a lot of creativity in these "cheap" games, and ... definitely fun.

The Cheapass Games Double-Secret Web Site is at http://www.cheapass.com.

When I started collecting, I noticed that most of the games had a CAG number in the corner. CAG is obviously Cheap Ass Game.

Here's a list of CAG numbers and the games they identify. Links in the CAG list go the BGG games wherever allowed by law.

The geeklist below will attempt to cover random information about each game and is ordered alphabetically by name. The information will be in this order:

1. Short personal description of the game
2. Number of players
3. What the game requires that is not included (dice, money, etc.)
4. CAG number
5. Series (if the game is part of a series)
6. Version information (if any)
7. Any other information

This is a BGG Geeklist, so I'm working with what is currently in the database. So for releases like Button Men, there is only one item, even though there are many CAG numbers.

For Cheapass Games series, such as Friedays, the most important game (usually the first) will list the other games in the series.

Because I'm trying to make this a ludography, I've locked the ability to add items, but feel free to comment.

I want to thank James Ernest, who was able to look over an early draft of this list and fill in a few holes. But all the mistakes are mine.

The ultimate pick-up-and-deliver game. You pick up tourists and drive them around your island paradise.

3-6 players.

Requires: cards, dice, and candy.

Priceless!

There was an earlier game called Short Bus to Paradise that appeared in Chief Herman's Next Big Thing and that also appeared in Wirehed.

There is some doubt whether this game ever appeared under the Paradise Cab name or whether it was ever sold. It is more mysterious than the age of Doctor Lucky.

You are a retail store owner selling body parts to mad scientists. You get the parts from grave diggers, you sell them to Viktor. The prices fluctuate based on supply and demand. Also, if you have enough of a surplus, you can create new villagers out of the parts. And if the demand is high enough, villagers will disappear. And a roving monster.

4-10 players.

Requires: two pawns, several counters, one six-sided die, and money.

You can now download this game for free from:

The download version includes a free poker variant called Frankenstein, created by E. Jordan Bojar and James Ernest.

Suppose you are playing a big long complicated giant table-filling roll-playing (er, role-playing) game and you suddenly need to emulate an actual war. Well, instead of ASL, you could play this game. You need lots of polyhedral dice, but I'm sure you do.

If you are squeamish, you can just take pictures of the animals or play chess with them.

In a review of Safari Jack, JASON M BROWN said, "James Ernest has a well deserved reputation for writing rules that are entertaining, amusing and easy to learn. I sometimes find myself wishing that Ernest would write all game rules!"

You're on Moon Base Copernicus but the moon base is about to explode and you'll be sucking vacuum. There's one escape pod left and it only holds two people. Doctor Lucky is also on the moon base and you want to save him "because without his help you're never going to inherit his ancient collection of interesting magazines."

3-7 players.

Required: the original Save Doctor Lucky and all the bits it needs.

CAG 408

Part of the Doctor Lucky series.

I find it interesting that Doctor Lucky was on the Titanic and then somewhat later, a moon base. Especially considering that Doctor Lucky was a lucky old man on April 14, 1912, and he was still a lucky olf man on Moon Base Copernicus, one hundred years later, on April 14, 2012. Jerry Cornelius, anyone?

Free!

You can get it at: http://www.cheapass.com/free/games/sloppyseconds.html

The game was designed by Jim Geldmacher and James Ernest.

There were plans to release two new versions of Starbase Jeff: Starbase Jeff Red (CAG 966) and Starbase Jeff Gold (CAG 967), but they did not appear, alas.

You and your pals went on a scout hike but you got lost. You wander around until you stumble upon a circus. What could be better? Well, one of sideshow exhibits, Stumpy the Cave Boy, has escaped, and the evil barker, Old Man Parker, needs a new boy to put in the cage. You run through the circus and try to escape. But one of you will most certainly be caught ... and become the new Stumpy the Cave Boy.

3-10 players (best with 4-6).

Requires: a pawn for every player, a master pawn for Old Man Parker, one 6-sided die, and several pennies.

CAG 012 (but never sold as this title)

This game was originally slated to become CAG 012, but it was not meant to be. Instead the game was remodeled into Escape from Dork Tower which appeared in John Kovalik's Dork Tower issue #4 in 1999.

However, due to the diligent efforts of Chief Herman, this game (Stumpy) was brought back from the dead and appears in Chief Herman's Holiday Fun Pack.

If you are a fan of recursion or self-reference or Rene Magritte, you'll love this game. You play an attendee at a convention who is trying to get the most swag. In case you don't know, swag is the name for free junk that people give away at conventions. So in this game, you go around trying to get swag, and then store it in your hotel room. But don't leave it there too long or someone else will steal it. The one with the most swag wins (or at least has sore arms). Of course, you can only play this game at a convention.

2-6 players.

Requires:

Free!

This game was given away free at GenCon 2002. But at that same con, by a great coincidence, you could buy a Swag Bag for $5 which contained all the components you needed to play the game.

This game was a heavy influence on Captain Treasure Boots.

Cheapass also had a version of Swag that was classier than the one given away at the convention and it looked like this:

Like Picasso, Cheapass had a blue period when they bought a lot of blue cardboard. There were other resemblances to Picasso. What they were is left as an exercise for the reader.

This game is a brain burner. You have been warned.

The game instructions suggest that you need a way to keep score, such as a slab of wood and a sharp knife.
