When I was a kid I read superhero comic books. I wasn't an avid reader and I know some folks collected them but I didn't collect them, I just read them for what they were. Entertainment. My favorites were the Fantastic Four, The Flash and Ironman. As an adult I still like the idea of the classic superheros. While I gave up reading the comic books themselves when I became a teen I do still enjoy the superhero movies. I don't know if it brings me back to my childhood days or what. I just like them.
This summer has been a boon for those who like the classic superheros and of course superhero movies. There's been 3 this year with Ironman and Batman being monster hits and the Incredible Hulk also doing quite well. So seeing as I am not the only one who likes superhero movies I thought it would be kind of cool to take a look at some of the great films of the genre, some of the bad and some of the future films coming down the pike.
Since superhero movies tend to go in a series I am not going to do an entry for each Christopher Reeves Superman film for example. However I will do separate entires for the new Christian Bale Batman film from the previous series started with Michael Keaton.

Superman (1978)
Sequels: Superman II (1980) Superman III (1983) Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Hero: Christopher Reeve as Superman
Main Villains: Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor Terence Stamp as General Zod
Probably the first big budget superhero film. Directed by Richard Donner, the first and second films were filmed simultaneous until they started to basically run out of money. At that point principle photography on the second film stopped and all attention focused on completing the first film. After the first film was released the second film was completed but with the Producers firing Richard Donner and hiring Richard Lester to complete the film.
This film is a true classic and for many Christopher Reeve was and will always be Superman. His performance as the Man of Steel was great but it was his performance at Clark Kent that truly sold the whole package. Gene Hackman was a great villain. Unfortunately after the first two films the series took a downward turn resulting in the goofy Superman III with Richard Pryor and the downright horrid Superman IV Quest for Peace.

Superman Returns (2006)
Hero: Brandon Routh as Superman
Main Villains: Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther
This film is sort of a sequel to the Christopher Reeves Superman II. Mind you it's likely a good idea that we forget that Superman III and IV ever happened.
The plot itself is kind of funky with the is he or isn't he the father of Lous Lane's son. Kevin Spacey does a great job as Lex Luther as does Brandon Routh filling the shoes of the late great Christopher Reeves. In theory a sequel is in the works with director Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh set to return but so far nothing concrete is in motion.

Spiderman (2002)
Sequels: Spiderman 2 (2004) Spiderman 3 (2007) Spiderman 4 (2011)
Hero: Tobey Maguire as Spiderman
Villains: Willem Dafoe as The Green Goblin Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus (Doc Ock)
A real first class recreation of the comic book series. Tobey Maguire was spot on for the role of Peter Parker and Willem Dafoe was just fantastic as The Green Goblin. Both sequels have lived up to the original film as well. The first film actually held the record for best domestic opening weekend for a film until it was dethroned this past weekend by Batman.

The Hulk (2003)
Sequels: The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Heros: Eric Bana as Bruce Banner (2003) Edward Norton as Bruce Banner (2008)
Main Villains: Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky
The first Hulk film in 2003 was considered a great disappointment by many fans and in the end it did rather lackluster at the box office. Undaunted the studio folks went back to the drawing board and hired Zak Penn who wrote the screenplays for two of the X-Men films and the first Fantastic Four movie to pen a new Hulk script. The result was a much better received and financially successful Hulk film. Penn is also slated to write the scripts for the upcoming Avengers film as well as Captain America.

Batman (1989)
Sequels: Batman Returns (1992) Batman Forever (1995) Batman & Robin (1997)
Hero: Michael Keaton as Batman (1989/1992) Val Kilmer as Batman (1995) George Clooney as Batman (1997) Chris O'Donnell as Robin Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl
Villains: Jack Nicholson as Joker Danny Devito as Penguin Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman Jim Carrey as The Riddler Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr Freeze
The first Batman series separate from the current one starring Christian Bale (or at least imho is). The series started off great with Michael Keaton turning in a fantastic performance as Batman (still the best I think). Jack Nicholson's Joker was one of the best performances of his long and impressive career. The second film was good even with Danny Devito's rather over the top portrayal of the Penguin. After that it went down hill with the final film featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger in perhaps the worst performance in any superhero film (I know Arnold fans are going to roast me for saying that).

Batman Begins (2005)
Sequels: The Dark Knight (2008)
Hero: Christian Bale as Batman
Villains: Liam Neeson as Henri Ducard Heath Ledger as The Joker
Opening last weekend the second film in this series set the record for the top domestic opening weekend beating out the previous record holder Spiderman I. Liam Neeson was a good villain in the first film but Heath Ledger's performance as Joker in the sequel is legendary. I think Christopher Nolan makes a good Batman but I'm still a fan of Michael Keaton in the role. Will be interesting to see what the future holds for this series and whoever is cast as the next villain will have huge shoes to fill.

The Fantastic Four (2005)
Sequels: 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
Hero: Ioan Gruffudd as Mr Fantastic Jessica Alba as Invisible Girl Chris Evans as Human Torch Michael Chiklis as The Thing
Villains: Julian McMahon as Doctor Doom Laurence Fishburne as voice of The Silver Surfer
While not the knock out hits of Spiderman and alike the films aren't bad and Julian McMahon does a nice job as Doctor Doom. Still the films are a touch on the campy side and not a ton of depth to the stories.

X-Men (2000)
Sequels: X2 (2003) X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) X-Men Origins: Wolverine (movie prequel 2009) X-Men Origins: Magneto (prequel concentrating on the early lives of Charles Xavier and Magneto 2010)
Heros: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier Famke Janssen as Jean Grey aka The Phoenix James Marsden as Cyclops Halle Berry as Storm Anna Paquin as Rogue
Villain: Ian McKellen as Magneto Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
Different than most other superhero movies with there being so many different people running around with superhero powers. Hugh Jackman does a great job in what is basically a starring role even with the huge cast. The third film didn't quite live up to the first two but it was hardly a bad film.

Ironman (2008)
Sequels: Ironman 2 (2010) The Avengers (2011)
Hero: Robery Downey Jr as Ironman Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Villain: Jeff Bridges as Iron Monger
The hit of the 2008 summer movie season...at least it was until Dark Knight came along. Robert Downey Jr puts in perhaps the best performance as the main superhero since Christopher Reeves as Superman years ago. The film will have a sequel of course but also a third film involving The Avengers with Samuel L. Jackson (if you didn't stay through the credits of Ironman you missed Samuel L. Jackson's scene) as Nick Fury.

Villain: Michael Duncan as The Kingpin Colin Farrell as Bullseye
Ok, not as bad as a lot of people say but not a good film either. They did manage to squeeze a sequel out of it for Jennifer Gardener that made about $1.99 at the box office.

Mired in development hell at Warner Bros for several years. Joss Whedon was announced as the director last year and then silence ensued. Spawn (1997)
Hero/Protagonist: Michael Jai White as Al Simmons/Spawn
Villains: John Leguizamo as Clown Martin Sheen as Jason Wynn
This movie was an uninspring drab echo of the animated series that was running on HBO around that same time. However, this film marks the resurgence of John Leguizamo's career, carrying him away from his Luigi role in 1993's Super Mario Bros. Leguizamo's playful disturbing performance as the demonic imp-clown is still the most memorable aspect of this film. (Remind you of anybody?)
