The Madcap Laughs (1970)
Another good one. I like Golden Hair and Here I Go on this one. Golden Hair is pretty beautiful.

Technically this is Syd Barrett's first solo album, but I think the work was done at roughly the same time.

Shame that he wigged out.

Barrett (1970)
Both of Syd's solo albums were released in the same year. They had some help from the other members of Pink Floyd. This one is pretty good although the songs are a little more whimsical than many of the Floyd songs.

I really like the last song on the album...Effervescing Elephant.

This one was a compilation of stuff that didn't make it to the other two albums.

Honorable Mention. The first two solo albums were released as a double album called "Syd Barrett"

David Gilmour: (1978)

This was David Gilmour's first solo album. My favorite song on this album is "So Far Away" but the rest of it is pretty good too. Lots of good guitar work.

My favorites are the three instrumentals. "Mihalis" builds intensity slowly then fades away nicely. "Raise My Rent" is essentially a long blueish guitar solo that is the predecessor to his ending solo on Comfortably Numb. And "Its Deafinitely" has some nice slide guitar.

About Face: (1984)
This was released right after Roger Waters left the band and is a very good album. I like "Murder", "Out of the Blue" and "Let's Get Metaphysical". This album shows why David Gilmour is a guitar master. It also shows that he was the softer edge to Roger Waters.

Pete Townshend helped with Love on the Air in exchange for Gilmour's work on White City (Give Blood, the single is Gilmour's great guitar work). I have a solo Townshend concert tape with both tunes on it.

I used to have a VHS tape for a concert Townsend did at that time. I remember seeing Gilmour on it. Unfortunately, Mr. VCR was hungry the last time I watched it.

After a long hiatus from both Floyd and doing solo stuff, David Gilmour made this album. Some of the songs were written with his wife. My favorite on this is "Smile".

Music from the Body (1971) released with Ron Geesin.

This one is an interesting one from Roger Waters. Many of the songs are different sound effects from the body with music. My two favorite songs are "Breathe" and "Give Birth to a Smile".

The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking (1984):
This was Roger Waters first solo album after leaving Pink Floyd. You can hear much of the same music that he used in Pink Floyd. If I remember correctly, some of this are tracks there were going to be used on a third album for the Wall but never made it. I like this whole album, but my favorite is "Every Strangers Eyes".

Note: I used Busen Memo because of the cover of this album.

I remember reading that Waters had two nearly complete projects that he presented to the other members of Pink Floyd - The Pros & Cons of Hitchhiking and The Wall. At the time, Waters knew that his time with Pink Floyd was nearing an end so one of his projects would be done with Pink Floyd, the other would be a solo project. Luckily for us fans, they decided to do The Wall as Pink Floyd.

Memorable because of the splendid use of the backing vocalists - 'F*uk it then' as a vocal stab stands out in my memory...

And Eric Clapton on gee-tar, doin' his blues thang.

Around the time Radio KAOS came out, I remember listening to an interview with Roger Waters on the radio. The person giving the interview mentioned that Pros and Cons had a cast and Roger replied that he was working on making it into a play. Could be interesting.

F--- it then.
Take the children back to town.
Baby I'll see you around......

Love that song....

When the Wind Blows (1986?):
Not really a solo album because it has stuff by other people (David Bowie's track is pretty good) but the entire second side is Roger Waters' material. This stuff lays the groundwork for Radio KAOS. Folded Flags is pretty good.

"There must be more to life than lucky strikes and some unlucky ones and folded flags and pipes and drums"

Radio KAOS (1987):
Roger Waters third solo album. I remember reading about this one in Rolling Stone and waiting with baited breathe for it to come out. I went to the record store on release day and got it. Unfortunately, I was disappointed at first, but as I listened to it more, I enjoyed it more. I like this whole album, but I think my favorite is "Four Minutes" and the video that goes with it.

Saw the tour for this. Absolutely blew me away. From the synchronised animations, Paul Carrack on keyboards doing the support act by just coming out first and entertaining us with some Squeeze numbers, the manic Andy Fairweather-Low on guitar, to the radio booth interjections that kept the whole thing together. Brilliant.

At the interval, Roger Waters turned up in the radio booth and people phoned in from a phone-box in the middle of the auditorium to ask questions.

And then, at the end, they finished with 'The Tide is Turning' and the vid-screen lifted to reveal a huge male voice choir to do the choral parts as on the album. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried, and still can't hear the track (and this was 20 years ago!) without getting just a little choked...

Did I mention that I quite liked this album...? It gets onto the CD player in the car about once a month. :p

Never saw the show, I was a poor college student at the time but I did manage to score a bootleg from one of the shows and it sounds like it would have been awesome. Makes me wonder if Roger has some video tape tucked away somewhere.....

I do have a video tape of the Radio KAOS videos which was converted to DVD. Very cool stuff.

Amused to Death (1992):
This one stacks up very well to many of the Pink Floyd albums and slightly edges out "The Division Bell". I love this album top to bottom and can't really name a favorite out of it because I like them all. But if you asked me to name the best it would have to be "Perfect Sense".

Although this isn't from that song:
"...they loved the only explanation left...
This species has amused itself to death.
No tears to cry.
No feelings left...
The species has...amused itself to death."

And an honorable mention goes to "In the Flesh" by Roger Waters. It is recorded from one of his concerts in 2000. Pretty good takes on both his solo work and Pink Floyd work.

I started to listen to Pink Floyd over 20 years ago. Started with watching the Wall and then moved onto their other stuff. Then I started to discover their solo stuff. So now I have all their studio stuff and officially released live stuff. I have most of their solo stuff (with the exception of the three Nick Mason albums I can't find). Overall, I love their music. Shame that they can't get together for one more tour.

I stared listening to Floyd over 30 years ago. I don't get the appeal of anything after Meddle, especially the solo stuff... to pop radio and way over-produced.

This one is my fav: http://www.discogs.com/release/727386

The earlier Floyd definately has a different feel to it. Less somber, softer.

Maybe after you figure that one out, maybe you can work on figuring out the appeal of Britney Spears and Mariah Carey.
