When my wife and I visit my parents, I often try to sneak in a game or two. Once my baby boy is put to bed and dishes cleared, it's more often than not time to bring out games.

My Mom is usually the one to suggest we "try one of Mark's games, although I'm sure I won't understand it." My Dad NEVER suggests it's time to try a game, but he always plays regardless. Of the two, it's my Dad who picks up the nuances of the game quicker than my Mom.

Since my parents are not your typical gamers, I've only introduced games with quick to pick up rules.

Let me also say, most of the time the games played will either be Euchre or Cribbage, which I grew up on, but then it's time to try out something new. I've listed games below I've tried with my parents as either a SUCCESS or a FAIL.

Go ahead and list games if you like of successes or failures you've had in introducing games to your parents.

If it's a card game, it is bound to be a hit with my parents. My Dad is absolutely ruthless at this one. I haven't played Wizard with them for a while in favor of newer games, but this one is probably the biggest success.

I would imagine that between your dad and your wife that this would be one ruthless game of Wizard! Throw in your brother too... and I wouldn't want to play. gulp

Or could this one be the biggest success story with my parents? Again, have not played for some time, but partially my fault as I lumped the expansions together in a single box, making an unwieldy game too long for my parents (and for me!)

My parents easily picked up the rules, with the exception of the farmers, and they enjoy building the cities up.

I've recently separated out the tiles into their original boxes, so maybe Carcassone will make a reappearance soon!

Well I just played this with the folks, and they actually seemed to enjoy it! I don't think they'll be begging me for another game anytime soon, but I think I've demonstrated that modern board games are much more interesting and sophisticated than the stuff they use to play, and I expect they'll be less reluctant to try the next game I make 'em play. My dad in particular seemed to really get into the strategy; I didn't end up beating him by much, and I might not have beaten him if I'd explained farmer scoring better.

My mom mostly just played on autopilot, not taking a lot of time for strategy; I think she would have enjoyed herself more if my dad hadn't delighted in making her city impossible to complete.

Probably the easiest ruleset I've ever had to explain. My parents understood Blokus well enough, but my wife and I would ruthlessly crush them coming in first and second every game. ( I rarely play my wife one-on-one as she is really good at this one.)

I know what you mean about boring gameplay with this one. But it's so beautiful. I approach it now not so much as a game, but as an exercise or a meditation. Kind of a way to clear the mind before or in-between games, like sorbet between courses at a fancy restaurant. I find I appreciate it much more looking at it from this perspective.

OK, it's a card game so my parents will like it, right? Not so, I think even my parents were a bit disappointed with the ease of rules with "That's all there is to it? Oh..."

I'm sure the theme didn't go over so well either, although this opinion was not voiced.

Was a bit sad to see this one as a Fail here, as it was only played once with just the boys - my Dad, my brother, and myself.

I don't think the game 'clicked' with my Dad. The trading aspect threw him off, and he did not make a single trade the entire game, despite my brother's and my urging. Thus, he was caught by the robber many times, despite our suggesting he make a trade or build.

NEUTRAL

This was a partial failure for me too in this area -- mainly in that it took way too long. Partially because 2 of the resources were pretty rare because of the board layout, this ended up running over 3 hours when we tried it, so my mom and dad were a bit burnt out on it by the end. I wouldn't exactly call it a failure (they mostly enjoyed it, were trading fine, etc.), but I wouldn't really call it a success either.

My mom rarely wins against me and my wife, but she's always keen to give it another go. However, last game, she snuck out a win from under me (I was at 9 VPs) by stealing the Longest Road, building a Settlement and revealing a VP development card to declare a win. Her turn was right before mine (on which I would have won), so it'll be a while before she'll let me forget this game.

Kill Doctor Lucky was a big failure. My Mom asked if this was like Clue (which she hates). I told her "sort of, but WE are trying to kill the Doctor". "Oh dear....," was the reply.

It went downhill from there. Perhaps I explained it badly? Getting multiple turns by getting the doctor to 'follow you' really threw my parents for a loop. Oh well.

"Beer and pretzel" gamers eat this up. I pitch it as "Remember how you solve a murder in Clue? Well, in this one, you get to commit the murder!"

This is now my default recommendation for anybody interested in trying "new" board games. Went over very well with my family as well. Interestingly, when we played my dad got the highest score I'd ever seen at that point -- but I got even more, hehe. (I think it was like 175 and 160 or something.)

Fast, fun game with the easiest rules (takes 15 seconds to explain them) yet every game is a little different and interesting. One round can be played in 10 minutes -- sometimes that's all we play -- or several rounds that comprise a game can be done in 30 minutes. Definitely a winner.

FAILURE

Fairly simple rules, perfect for 4, one I was borrowing and liked pretty well, should play in about an hour - good to go right? Not so much; we've probably played at least 2 dozens games as a family since I've gotten into board gaming, and this is probably the only one my mom would refuse to play again.

I'm not sure exactly what it was about this one, but my parents (especially my mom) simply could not "get" it. We ended up running about 2 hours and she was still annoyed and confused by the end.

(I've also since realized that playing with my family is like playing with 4 of me, in the sense that they all play as slow as I do, so I have to estimate times higher than normal )

SUCCESS

This was actually the first game we played when we decided to start trying some games as a family (we used to occasionally play stuff like Spades years and years ago, but it's been a looonng time.) Everyone enjoyed it and we instantly played a 2nd game afterwards. This is my 2nd default recommendation for people new to board gaming (along with TtR).

This one also went over very well. Nothing really further to say on that one - everyone enjoyed themselves and we've played it again since then (they like trying new ones, so this actually hasn't happened with many games yet.)

My older brother picked this one to try out. At first I wasn't sure how well it'd go over with my mom, but as soon as I'd passed out the guns she picked it up and started pointing it at the rest of us, and I knew I was okay =) Another one everyone enjoyed that has also gone over very well with some other casual gamer friends.

SUCCESS

Following the success of Alhambra, I bought this game because it had similar elements - building, collecting money, etc. It was a good hunch - my mom and wife love this game and mom seems to be concentrating on a "Diamonds" strategy.

Soon to try games with my parents include Combo King (which I'm sure will be a hit), and Razzia (which may be hit-or-miss).

-- If your mom likes card games, try "Ticket to Ride" with her. It's a card game where you collect meld sets of matching color cards then you play them on a board to claim colored railroad track connecting cities (for example: 2 orange cards played together allows you to claim the track between New York and Washington, D.C.). Great hybrid of card game and board game.

Gotta agree. basically, it is a specialized version of rummy where you work your melds into route bonuses (or penalties). That explanation has enabled many people I've invited to play to say, "right, let's go!"

Now why didn't I think of that! I actually own TTR Europe. One to add to the list for sure.

(Background: Family of 4 total including myself. I'm youngest in my early 20s and the one introducing the games; older brother is in late 20s and has played several computer games, mom and dad have played an occasional game in the past but not a lot. Mom is usually more easily confused by the rules, but usually plays well if she understands them. I'm a fairly AP-prone player, and my family tends to be as well. Also, most of these have not been played more than once.)

Including what I posted on the main list, my full list thus far:

GREAT SUCCESS (Everybody liked it and would happily play again.)
Bridges of Shangri-La
Pickomino
Ra
Ticket to Ride
Ca$h n' Gun$
Bohnanza (First new-fangled game we played.)
For Sale
Dragon Delta
Vikings (Everyone understood it easily and it worked well; I was able to teach it very clearly even though I hadn't even played before at the time.)

SUCCESS (Everyone liked it at least reasonably well and would play again; there may have been some minor snags.)
Hey! That's My Fish!
Basari
I'm the Boss
Mamma Mia!
Mission: Red Planet
O Zoo Le Mio
Oasis
Walk the Plank (Prototype of game a friend and I are making)
Lord of the Rings
Cartagena
Hoity Toity

NEUTRAL (The game played really slow or was confusing to at least one player; everyone would be willing to try again, but didn't especially enjoy the first time.)
Honor of the Samurai (Ran ~3.5 hours)
Galaxy Trucker (Dad did not really "get" it at all, mom wasn't a lot better, but they said they'd try again.)
Settlers of Catan (Ran ~3.5 hours, mildly confusing for mom.)
Hunting Party (Ran ~3 hours, mom was confused most of the game with the way the various powers interact with each other - too much to keep track of.)
Cave Troll (Ran ~3 hours, mom was confused by the powers of the individual pieces - too much to keep track of.)

FAILURE (At least one player would not play again, or more than one person disliked.)
Meuterer (Ran ~2 hours, Mom throughly disliked, others were lukewarm.)

Expected Future Successes:
Vegas Showdown
Alhambra
China
Liar's Dice
Loot
Through the Desert (I haven't even had a chance to play this at all, but the rules are simple enough I think everyone will enjoy it.)

Expected Future Attempts (Might have some minor issues):
Acquire (Might run long though)
Nexus Ops (Could be confusing to my mom, hopefully not too bad with the reference sheet.)
Tichu (Will probably play to 800 so it doesn't run too long, might be confusing but player aids should help.)
