I just wanted to take a little time out of your life (if going on BGG even is a life) to give you a few hopefully friendly tips to get you on your way without learning the stuff tough.

Now, BGG OldUsers, we've been there and done that. You pay attention also. You may learn something you were blind to (nothing personal).

Any tips/annoyances you want noticed? Please add them to the list.

DON'T APOLOGIZE

It seems that too many posts by newbies begin with something like "This is my first post/review/session/whatever, so be kind to me" or "Sorry if this is wrong" or ....

I'm sorry (ooops), but that really doesn't help much. It doesn't sound confident. People like confident folks, so be confident.

Of course, apologizing at the right time is a virtue.

Right on the heels of this...
Don't be offended when someone corrects you.

If you've posted in the wrong place, someone will tell you. If you asked a question that has been posted several times before, someone might give you a link to the prior threads rather than an answer. No matter what the tone of the answerer is, try to take it as a lesson learned and commit yourself to checking things next time.

Groggie is a rule unto himself.

He is a "WTF?" moment personified into living flesh.

He's our "and now for something completely different" commercial, in the midst of your regularly scheduled programming.

He's the clown that shows up at your kid's birthday party, that no one remembers hiring.

He's a petite mal seizure, portrayed on an 8.5" by 11" piece of paper.

He's not only discordant, he's also recordant.

He's the guy that everyone knows, but no-one can quote directly.

He's the only person I know, who's never been seen in the company of himself.

No one truly knows Groggie, or has seen Groggie, but there are Groggie sized chunks missing from their sanity.

This would be a poorer and lonelier place without him.

SEARCH THE BGG FORUMS BEFORE POSTING

More likely than not, someone else has had your question or has posted the comment you thought of in the forums before you. Don't go posting questions if you haven't looked for the answer in the forums. Don't go posting anything else that already has a thread committed to that subject.

Just look at the majority of Agricola threads...

Following on from this, if you can't find the answer to your question in the forums, go ahead and ask the question, but

GIVE YOUR POST A MEANINGFUL SUBJECT HEADING

It's quite possible the question has been asked under a heading like "A Question", which is why you've missed it. A subject like "Question on Scoring for Pastures" is much more useful when future readers with the same question are looking for it.

(Note, that subject was totally off the top of my head, I don't need help scoring pastures in Agricola)

I will propose a corollary: For existing BGGers, assume that the person has searched. Maybe he came up with 200 hits or had a question that would be difficult to search. But nothing irritates me more (not usually here but in any forum) than searching, not finding my answer, posting, then reading 4 responses of "WHY DON'T YOU USE THE %^&%$ SEARCH FUNCTION???" If you were going to take the trouble to respond at all, why not just answer the question? It would probably take just as much typing. And does an oft-answered question offend you THAT much that you have to take time out of your day to berate the poster?

So my suggestion is, if you see a question someone has asked before, answer it or move on to the next post.

I agree with you, but I don't think this is a common situation. If I can answer a question I will, if no one has beaten me to it (they usually have). I don't think I have ever seen a single response to a question such as you describe on these forums, much less 4, so I think most adopt the same attitude. They may post a link to a previous thread, that maybe covers things in more detail, but the question gets answered.

None of that means it's not a good idea to have a look at the list of previous posts in the rules forum, you may find your answer without having to wait for a response.

Find all sides of this one interesting since as a newb, trying not to ask a question that has been asked 100 times, doing a session report or review too similar to another, or starting a geeklist that has been done before. (Has it all been done already?) But feel I should not be intimidated by this and enjoy the site.

I could not agree more. Also:

POST RULES QUESTIONS IN THE "RULES" FORUM FOR THAT GAME

The forums for many games are littered with chit-chat (see Agricola, as already mentioned). Before posting a rules question I always search through the entire "Rules" forum for that game reading the Subject Headings (and not bothering with any that say "A Couple of Questions"). If nothing fits the bill I post my question, with a relevant Subject Heading. If anyone else ever has the same question they should find my post quite easily.

Oh no, please do not shut up - this is a well-intentioned thread and, I daresay, reading the commentary (and your gentlemanly responses thereto) would provide an excellent introduction to the community for any new user.

I suppose the ultimate lesson here is - do what you can to add to this site, and be receptive to community efforts to help you along in that endeavor.

Don't just order games, but look into the Marketplace and start considering how and whether to trade or sell games as well. Trading, particularly, will:

1) Bolster and refresh your collection;

2) Introduce you to new gamers aka friends;

3) Work those little grey cells;

4) Involve you in the site rather more;

5) Possibly make a number of people very happy.

Strongly recommended.

"We just picked up our red setter, Bussey, from the breeder and was eager to try him out. Archibald and Lucille were both very excited about having a pet dog and Gretchen had wanted a red setter since she was a little girl. We took Bussey over to Perkshire Park to have a run around. He was very boisterous and pulled on the lead all the way there. As soon as we let him off the lead he ran over and bit a small child in the face.

The next day, Bussey was exterminated by the nice lady at the vets.

This was my first experience with setters and I found the breed to be too random. I hope our experience with setters is better next time!!!"

Don't Buy a Game just because someone tells you "It's great"

There will be a lot of posts telling you that "this is the best game ever", don't just listen to them, read reviews, watch videos, read the rules, try everything that will help you to let you know this game is for you or not.

The same thing for the opposite, don't just listen to the negative reviews, (a lot of people after the first bad review say: OK', that's it, I wont buy this game because of ____").

This has been summed up in a pithy phrase by which many live less disappointing, more economical lives; Try before you buy.

Figure out how you'd like to use thumbs

Thumbs are on average a rough measure of quality on this site although this does vary. On the game pages thumbs are more of an indication of quality. In GeekLists/forums they tend to be more of a general 'that's neat/you made me laugh' type indicator.

Don't be afraid to post a negative review

There are a lot of people who will come out of the woodwork to defend a game. Negative reviews are necessary and you'll get the support you need, often tacitly, in the form of thumbs and geekgold.

However, when posting a negative review, it helps to clearly lay out what about a game is not enjoyable or challenging so that you don't get jumped on by fanboys (you'll still get jumped, but the arguments will be weaker or simply, "I just disagree).

If you do post a negative review, however, "This game sucks and I hate it" isn't going to be accepted by the mods or the community.

As with any review, tell us what you don't like about the game, and why. Give the readers some insight into why they may not want it. That's the purpose of a review, after all.
