I just wanted to take a little time out of your life (if going on BGG even is a life) to give you a few hopefully friendly tips to get you on your way without learning the stuff tough.

Now, BGG OldUsers, we've been there and done that. You pay attention also. You may learn something you were blind to (nothing personal).

Any tips/annoyances you want noticed? Please add them to the list.

DON'T APOLOGIZE

It seems that too many posts by newbies begin with something like "This is my first post/review/session/whatever, so be kind to me" or "Sorry if this is wrong" or ....

I'm sorry (ooops), but that really doesn't help much. It doesn't sound confident. People like confident folks, so be confident.

Of course, apologizing at the right time is a virtue.

Right on the heels of this...
Don't be offended when someone corrects you.

If you've posted in the wrong place, someone will tell you. If you asked a question that has been posted several times before, someone might give you a link to the prior threads rather than an answer. No matter what the tone of the answerer is, try to take it as a lesson learned and commit yourself to checking things next time.

I apologized once.
But I'm not sorry I did it.

Many users are so unconfident and apologetic because they're used to the way most of the internet is: vitriolic, spiteful, and mean.

BGG is a lot more relaxed than that. We'll correct you politely if you make a mistake. So don't sweat it.

Agree wholeheartedly. I was very careful not to step on people's toes with my first few posts, because the other forums I post at are just flame wars waiting to happen. But now that I've posted a few times and seen how nice, understanding and helpful everybody here is, I realize I can just be the sarcastic, cynical a-hole I am. WOOHOO!

Where else can I dare use an avatar whose sole purpose is to confuse and irritate?

I think that that has already been said. Here's the link: www.kenbsweatsandissoverysorry.com

Where else can I use the AdBlock extension to block an animated avatar whose sole purpose is to confuse and irritate? Hmm, well, everywhere, actually... never mind.

This should be moved to a forum.

DON'T USE SO MANY EMOTICONS

We've all had robot this experience. zombie A newbie :D posts :meeple: a new thread  but the text sauron is muddled up goo with emoticons trash, which makes :( the text impossible  to read. :snore: I'll bet  that the info  wasn't very useful  anyway :arrrh:, let alone :wow: clever or well :) written. ninja

I'm actually a big fan of emoticons. They help to make the forums and your posts a bit more colorful and prevent some miscommunication. But when it's too much...
