First game of the week was Power Grid. I had a choice between this and Air Baron, but decided early on that I'd have to play this Tuesday or or never with other gaming obligations. I'm glad I did. I played with 3 very strong players (although Tom McCorry is the only name I remember) and even though I finished a sorry last, I think I learned a lot about the gameplay. I think I'm a better player for having lost that game, than maybe I would've been by winning another, if that makes sense.

Vegas Showdown Tuesday evening in ... ugh, Host A. What a rough room. With a high turnout, the room got rather warm. I gamed with a two young ladies and two other guys. Again, not the best with names, although I do know two of the players were from Utah.

I was able to string together some good auction wins, with a night club and theater to pull off a srong win in my first heat.

I was unable to make the semi's due to a scheduling conflict which really bummed me out because this is a game that I really consider a very fun time and a fair and balaced game.

Every morning, down in Cornwall for some sports. Terry runs a great tournament and this year was no exception.

First two heats I played I drew the last draft pick so my team's were picked for me. I played well with the last seeds, dropping my opener 80-79 and my second heat opener 82-77. My third and final heat, I drew a higher seed and my dice were average, but Dave's dice were off the charts. I lost 96-79.

SI baseball, run by Chris Palermo. A favorite of my dad's. I watched him play Marshall before March Madness and just by watching I was able to learn the game. I asked Chris if there were teams left that I could get in with, and he had a few. I took what I thought was a decent team (of the ones left), Toronto. I played this game the most throughout, and had a lot of fun and met a lot of really cool gamers. Because of the statistical handicaps, I was close to making the playoffs despite a poor record. I will draft a team next year and hopefully put a stronger effort forth record wise.

Got to play my favorite game in heat 2. I got to meet the designer and ask him some of the questions that my friends and I pondered over and that was a highlight of the week for me.

My first heat was memorable for several reasons and after a lengthy struggle that saw me stay in fare wars for a long time trying to get into Atlanta (6 die rolls, 4 sets of snake-eyes - seriously) I was able to secure ATL to go along with CHI, DET, and WASH to net 300 market share and $50 in my hand was enough for the heat win.

My semi final was rough, from the start the player out west got paid early and often. He was almost uncontested for Western dominance, but I was able to sneak in a jumbo in Sacramento. The dice were awful to everyone who attacked. I think there was a 15% win rate for attackers. The player out west (again forget the name, but really a great guy and great player) won with hubs.

Henry Richardson put on a great tournament.

I had learned this game from the group I play with and I figured if I had a 5 minute refresher I'd be able to play intelligently. It was my first game in the Grognard section of the hotel, in Conestoga.

Joe Lux was the GM and explained the way the cards would be shuffled. That confused the heck out of me, but I wasn't worried since I didn't have a copy of the game. Joe told us to sit at a table with a game, so I sat down with Steve Shambeda, who unbeknownst to me was the defending UP Champ. Two very nice ladies sat with us as well and we started rolling. The gameplay came back to me almost immediately and I was able to finish in a tie for second. Steve had a strong monopoly that no one could dent for 2 rounds, so he won rather easily. The lady I tied with had another committment, so I was able to advance to the semi's on points (thanks to Steve).

I was able to win my semi-final heat with some beneficial UP purchases. The win was my first ever semi-final win and set up my first final table. This was the game that I missed my Vegas Showdown semi for. I couldn't miss my first final.

The final was played with 3 very strong UP players and I was happy to have just made it. I played as strong as I could, but finished 3rd with 124. The winning score was a tie at 134! Each player held 5 UP stocks and the second tie-breaker became total diverse stock numbers, which was a 7-6 tie breaking final. Joe said it was a pleasure to just watch the way the game was played and thanks to another gamer there were prizes for each player at the final table. I took a book called "train wrecks" since I felt that described my dice rolling the best.

GREAT event - looking forward to next year already.

I was looking forward to this all week. I watched the demo because I had never played auction rules on the table. I played a few 2P auction games on SBW, so I knew the mechanic involved, but turn order and certainly bid strategy was new to me and it showed.

Heat one was a mess. I felt bad for the GM Dan because the TtR heat basically took over ballroom B. Tikal players basically had to rush to get the game set up so that they had a table to play one. We also ran 2 games to a table, but that was fine. Heat 1 I sat with 2 newbies and (again unbeknownst to me at the time) 2007 Champ Harold Henning. Harold played things coy, but I knew he was a strong player. I came in second place to Harold by 10 or so points and he had some very strong temples that were unopposed by anyone.

Heat 2 was rough for me. The GM sat in on my game and while it looked like he was a leader, Ken had a strong hand and bid well. I bid very poorly and really was a non-factor late. I had a good time meeting with Ken and playing with the GM though.

A very successful debut event run by Greg Schmittgens. I was paired up with a new player in the first heat and a very friendly player - Tom DeMarco. He drew Kennedy and I drew Nixon. I got several lucky draws and was able to keep a few momentum chips to help along. He focused in the West late and I was able to sneak into NY and PA to pull off the win.

My second heat I also drew Nixon, but the cards were less friendly. I kept it close late, finishing with 230 EV, but not enough.

I look forward to next year's 1960 Tournament.

a few open games with my dad. We played in the hallway before Ballroom B during the evenings and a few people stopped by and we showed them the basic gameplay.

Any time my dad and I play it's more of a relaxing effort than anything else.

My first Demo of the weekend.

Eric Brosius explained the rules very clearly and we were able to sneak in a few practice turns before his tournament started. The demo turned this game from a maybe buy to a probably buy for me.

My second demo. Tom did a good job explaining the game, and I think when it comes in I'll have a basic understanding of the gameplay. I did not enter the tournament since I was very new to the game and wasn't 100% comfortable with game flow. Will probably enter next year though.

My final demo was Saturday evening. T&E with Craig Moffitt. Very strong demo that explained the rules and gameplay very well. I had been looking at this game for a long time due to it's BGG rating and I'm glad I took the time to learn it.
