10 Questions for Everyone! (#12)
United States Lexington Kentucky
-
I originally created these surveys to provide a fun diversion that would get the community talking about their hobby. Along the way, I've learned a lot about BGG and its users.
Please note: I have started a subscription thread here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/305311
In this list, please answer all of the following questions in a single geeklist entry:
1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on? 2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy? 3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest? 4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why? 5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year? 6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in? 7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits? 8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game? 9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played? 10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?

1) DoW: In my opinion, it'd be nice if DoW focused on what they do best: standalone family-friendly games with excellent production quality.
2) Monster: Magdar (the BGG celebrity) is pretty funny. 3) Laugh: Pit has made me laugh so hard that I was sore the next day. 4) Publisher: Zman games has impressed me. Their new and scheduled releases are really compelling. 5) Geekie: Pandemic definitely deserves a geekie. 6) Release: I'm looking forward to Chinatown. I like negotiation games. 7) Economy: The strength of the Euro has impacted my buying power, but, the economic stimulus package funded a game order. 8) Travel: I've never traveled more than 25 miles to play a game. 9) Zany: Maus nach Haus is the zaniest game I've played. You flick mice into a rotating hoop's path as it settles. 10) Love Child: Agricola and Puerto Rico would spawn a farming game with "colonists."

Quote: 1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on? I don't know anything about this. I figure Days of Wonder should ride their milk cow--Ticket to Ride--as long as they can. I haven't been impressed by any of their other stuff.
Quote: 2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy? I do not think about things I do not think about.
Quote: 3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest? Probably Celebrities, back in the day when it was popular as a late-night convention game. Can't remember any specific instances, but I have laughed playing games to the point where I could not speak. Runner up: Beyond Balderdash (or was it Inspiration) when someone put an answer of "Marcel Marceau's last words." I found it funny and couldn't speak. LeoT asked if I was OK and I could only give an OK sign, which he interpreted as the ghost of Mr. Marceau and he broke down. It was a glorious moment.
Quote: 4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why? I don't really care who publishes games. I seldom look at the name of the publisher or author of a game.
Quote: 5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. I think the kid games need some real kid games nominated. That means games targeted at people under 12 and not intended to please those 12 and older, though they may tolerate the game.
Quote: Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year? Hanging Gardens, I guess.
Quote: 6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in? I don't know what's planned for release. That's for Cult of the New members.
Quote: 7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits? Not really. I didn't do much before and still don't.
Quote: 8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game? About 600 miles, one way.
Quote: 9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played? I don't like wacky and zany, so I would have blotted it out of my mind by now. I remember some silly game where we had to keep peeking under chits to find matchers. I don't like real-time games like that.
Quote: 10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be? I don't know, but it would be too convoluted, have way too many cards, and think wey too much of itself.

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
Memoir 44 hands down. While I still would love for them to return to stand alone family games, this is still my number 1 choice.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy? The four diseases of Pandemic.
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest? Quelf. Great party game that really breaks down the barriers.
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why? I guess with battleLore going to FFG, that completes them taking the spot away from DOW.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year? Stone Age. I think it is a FUN game that is pretty light-hearted but has some nice decisions to make. How can you not like a game that has a Love Shack.
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in? I think it falls within the time period: Arabian Nights. Like the theme and like the story book feel the gameplay is going to try to capture.
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits? Moreso the wedding has impacted my habits. The economy would have been a slight hiccup. But trying to deal wth all 3 is too much so games have to take a step back.
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game? 2 Hours. To my old roommates' house in Kokomo, IN.
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played? That goes to Quelf once again. Someone sits with a frying pan in their lap until someone tosses something in there (unbeknownst to us) and then he starts singing and says soup's up!
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be? Hmmm... Co-Co Beware!

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
I didn't know it happened. That's how much I care about Battlelore... I'd like to see them produce some more big box games, though the only one I've really liked is Ticket to Ride (I also own and like Memoir, but rarely get to play).
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy?
Sauron in Knizia's LOTR. It's the only game component that has ever inspired real stress in me.
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
Things... With the right crowd, that game is HILARIOUS. Time's Up and Taboo are also very funny.
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
Z-Man did a great job with Agricola, but I can't really say I pay attention to that a whole lot. Historically, I'd have to say that Alea and Hans im Gluck are the most important to me.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
This has been an awesome year for games. I'd probably pick Race for the Galaxy, but Glory to Rome, Pandemic, In the Year of the Dragon and Agricola are also really good.
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
Currently, Battlestar Galactica looks very interesting.
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?
No, I'm in Canada.
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game?
4 hours to Sudbury to play Duel of Ages with a highschool buddy.
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played?
The Mad Magazine boardgame. You have to roll with your off hand or be penalized, pretend your a chicken, etc, etc. I was a kid, so I can't comment on the quality of the game... but it was definitely weird.
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?
Rico Cola.

My opponent
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
We Didn't Playtest This At All
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
Tough one. I don't know. Ludo Art probably, but I haven't gotten anything from them for a while.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
AoE III, it was robbed last year
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
Planet Steam
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
New games. Really, I don't have anything in particular that I can think of.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy? Hmm. I can't think of anything here, either. I'm tempted to pick something from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Game (US), but there's nothing that really stands out there. Maybe Dracula from Fury of Dracula.
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest? That would probably have to be Chopstick Dexterity MegaChallenge 3000.
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why? Looney Labs. I really like the pyramid games, and I enjoy playing most of their card games, too. It's the only publisher for which I have a "fan" microbadge. And I designed it.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year? Well, Dominion is not coming out until Essen, so almost certainly too late for it to win an award this year. I don't even know if it would be eligible this year. Is it too early to lobby for next year?
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in? Dominion.
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits? The economic data I've seen shows slight economic growth. Consumer confidence is a funny thing, though. That aside, I would have to say that no, the economy has not affected my gaming habits. I don't buy many games, anyway, since my friends and the CABS library have so many games available. The Rio Grande Games giveaway at Origins was a huge boon to my game collection, but I think that could only be attributed to the economy indirectly.
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game? It wasn't for a specific game, but earlier this month I drove about 30-40 minutes to a Games Night, which is about as far as I've gone.
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played? I guess that would be Run for your Life, Candyman!.
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be? Sorry, I got nothin'.

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
A new game would be welcome...something that isn't related to either Memoir 44 nor Ticket to Ride.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy?
Fearsome Floors monsters - always play with two and have a fun time mixing and matching parts.
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
Game pictured as the image for this post is one. Many party games with the right crowd can become riotously fun and full of laughs. Curses is another game if played with the right crowd that can be extremely hilarious.
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
I have two at this point - both GMT and Zman Games.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
Galaxy Trucker - speaking of which, I need to get this game played again soon!
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
Tales of Arabian Nights - hands down the one I'm most anticipating, largely because it is something that feels unique to me (as I have never been able to play the original).
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?
No.
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game?
About 3-4 hours just to play games (a gaming convention)
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played?
Hard to say, perhaps Tumblin' Monkeys?
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?
Don't really care.

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
Will not impact me. I don't like any Days of Wonder games I've played: Pirate's Cove to simple, Colosseum dull, Cleopatra went nowhere (all flash) and TTR to simple.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy?
Jack Pumpkinhead from Swords and Sorcery
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
Save the President by Jack Jaffee
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
Sierra Madre games. Eklund pushes the envelope, has tremendous themes, deep research into the topics, and ends up with fascinating games.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
Origins: How We Became Human, but not a chance in Hell
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
Halls of Montezuma (GMT). It is looking to be a really bad Essen.
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?
Yep- things are MUCH cheaper for us here in Europe now... thanks for that
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game?
A few hours
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played?
Not too big into 'wacky'
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?
Another overpraised, point-maximizing game made vanilla so there cannot be external disruption of the well-laid plans of the players.

Ok, some interesting questions, here we go:
1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
Days of Wonder shouldn't expand their two most successful games (BattleLore and Ticket to Ride) to death. They should better make some good card or strategic games or something like that.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy?
The bullheads in "6 nimmt!" (Category 5) ;-)
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
Probably Attribute. Some games, I've played in BSW were absolutely fun! ;-)
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
I don't care about publishers. I just look if I like the game or not. German publisher of Stone Age is for example Hans im Glück. Would the game be worser if it was published by Amigo or Ravensburger or any other publisher? I really don't think so!
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
Just spoke about Stone Age... ;-) Best game this year, definitive.
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
NEXT YEAR??? Look, we have Essen Toy Fair in some months, there are enough games, that sound interesting, who will be released there. On the other hand, I even don't know what will be released next year...
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?
I'm german, so I buy games in Germany. I don't care about US economy... ;-)
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game?
My every-year-holiday in South Tyrol ;-) So, about 500 kilometers...
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played?
Attribute again, I suppose.
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?
A feature-length strategic bomb, with half a novel as rule book, that will be almost to complicated to play. ;-)

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
Stand alone family games with the same high production value as their other games. There are enough expansions for Ticket to Ride and Memoir 44.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy?
The robber of Catan.
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
Apples to Apples. But it has to be with the right crowd and the right frame of mind.
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
Tied for Rio Grande and Z-man. Both have given me excellent customer service.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
Stone Age, Pandemic, Race for the Galaxy...and I agree more kid's games need to be in the spotlight.
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
I haven't been paying attention. Probably the re-release of Chinatown if the production quality is good.
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?
My apologies to the non-Americans to whom this doesn't apply. Yes. Not so much the economy, but the price of gas and my personal expenses.
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game?
An hour to a game event and hardly anyone showed up.
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played?
Der Schwarze Pirat is about as wacky as I get. Maybe Beyond Baulderdash.
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?
Haven't played Agricola yet so I can't say.

Something I'm either working on right now, or will be working on for next year.

1) Days of Wonder? Releasing more new games (less focus on expansions.)
2) Monster/enemy? Sauron, or as we like to call him, the finger-rest of evil.
3) Laugh? Time's Up! Title Recall!
4) Publisher? I would have to say Days of Wonder because I love their high production qualities, their well-written/organized rules, and their fun game mechanics.
5) Geekie? Even though I love and adore Time's Up! Title Recall!, since it's basically a rehash of a pre-existing game...I'd really like to see Say Anything win the Party Game of the Year.
6) Next year? I've never heard of a single one of these games
7) US economy? No, I can't say it has.
8) Farthest traveled? 245 miles, to Origins in Colombus.
9) Wackiest, zaniest? Don't Be A Dork: The Ultimate Party Adventure Game!
10) Agricola and Puerto Rico? Another game I've never played.

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
Besides briefly lamenting the demise of another boardgame company, I'd hardly notice if DoW went out of business today. I don't own a single one of their games and don't really care for any of the ones that I've played. 2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy? Wallace
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest? Time's Up - Derek pantomiming a racecar driver and his partner shouting out, "Donkey Kong!" I guess you had to be there. 4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why? Z-man, because of Zev's open communication here on the 'Geek. 5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year? Agricola deserves it. 6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in? Angola. Preorder now!!!! 7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits? Nah. It's actually perfectly coincided with me purposefully trying to stop buying new games and get rid of games in my collection that are not worthy for whatever reason. 8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game? About 500 miles, by bus, to get to the GoF. 9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played? Monkey Madness 10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be? SPACE BASTARDS! From outer space!

1) After the recent sale of Battlelore, what would you like Days of Wonder to focus on?
A similarly accessible sci-fi wargame.
2) Who/what is your favorite board game monster/enemy?
Stretching the definition a bit, but it's in the database: the gelatinous cube mini from Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures.
3) Which game has made you laugh the hardest?
With the right mix of players, Balderdash -- particularly the category where you make up movie plots.
4) Who is currently your favorite publisher and why?
Fantasy Flight Games. I love their production values and generally enjoy their games.
5) Now is the chance to lobby for your favorite Golden Geek nominee. Which game would you most like to see win a Geekie this year?
Pandemic! I finally snagged a copy a little while back, and it's become one of my group's favorites. Our win/loss ratio is terrible, but it's fun when you lose.
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
FFG's Battlestar Galactica. If I'd been at GenCon, I'd already have a copy -- October is too long to wait!
7) Has the downturn in the US economy impacted your gaming hobby habits?
Buying, yes; playing, no.
8) What is the farthest you've specifically traveled to play a game?
Utah to Indianapolis for GenCons 2005-2007.
9) What is the wackiest, zaniest game you've played?
As game descriptors, those are two of my least favorite -- they're so rarely accurate. That said, I guess it would be Jungle Speed.
10) If Agricola and Puerto Rico had an illegitimate love child, what game would it be?
Illegitimate? It would have to be something like...Descent, maybe.

Nazi Germans.

Ca$h'n'Gun$

StarCraft
6) What game planned for release in the next year are you currently most interested in?
