Well we just finished with the Charles S. Roberts awards for 2007 and were some great games in 2007 and some well deserving winners. Over all however I think it was a slightly off year. In part I think because GMT's slow production in the first half of last year. This year things are looking different. GMT is on a pace to double the amount of releases from last year. Meanwhile MMP who at one time relied upon ASL and the releases of Dean Essig is now producing a greater variety of top notch wargames aside from Dean's excellent work. Toss in Columbia, Worthington plus a few others and 2008 is looking to be the strongest year in recent memory.
So with that in mind I thought a list was in order to take a look at what's come out so far and what's on the horizon. I think this year is especially strong in the pre-WW II area. In most years the WW II games tend to dominate but this year it's looking like the Medieval and Ancient era games are unusually strong in terms of the number of high profile games coming out.

Blackbeard may have been GMT's most anticipated game ever. The fact that it sold out faster than any GMT game ever I think supports this notion. The artwork by Mark Mahaffey is fantastic and though there has been some criticism of the rulebook over all the game has seemed to have been well received.

Just getting my real first look at this game so can't judge it to much yet. The artwork (again by Mark Mahaffey) is fantastic. The game looks like a good fit for me in that it has very strong historical content with unencumbered system mechanics. Looking forward to receiving my copy soon.
I'm a big fan of Mark Mahaffey's artwork. I think his style is especially well suited for ancient and medieval era games. So much so that I made a Mapology microbadge.

MMP seems to have found an interesting and successful niche the last few years in terms of light wargames targeting the Russian Front of WW II. First was Victory Lost (a big CSR winner) followed by Red Star Rising. Both were very well received. This year it's A Victory Denied which concentrates on the Battle for Moscow.

Greatly anticipated to say the least. This classic Avalon Hill title gets the remake treatment from it's designer Richard Berg. Excellent artwork for this one by Mark Simonitch. I think the map may be one of his best.

I wasn't fortunate enough to play test this one but I have been fortunate enough to get to read the rules earlier this year. Paths of Glory fans are not going to be disappointed when this one hits their table.

This game languished and I do mean languished on the GMT P500 list forever it seems. GMT knew it was a good game though and stuck with it. In the end it has turned out to be rather a big hit. The call now is to turn the game into a series. I know if Jeff Horger came out with a civil war version you'd have to hold me back from sneaking into his house and stealing a play test copy.

I swear I have been waiting and waiting for a truly knock your socks off game on the Crusades. Haven't found it yet but I'm hoping this could be the one. Card driven (I'm a sucker for card driven wargames) and featuring artwork by Mark Mahaffey. The designer is Scott de Brestian who is a newcomer to wargame designing but he's working with development veteran Neil Randall which is a big plus. MMP hasn't done a ton of CDGs but Shifting Sadns which came out a few years back was superb so if it comes up to that level then I'll be happy as you can be.

Still waiting to see some artwork on this one. Card driven Mexican American War by David Fox and Michael Welker. William Cooper who did the development for Europe Engulfed does the same here.

Of course we need our dose of Dean Essig and his Standard Combat Series. I just might pick this one up. I enjoy the Standard Combat Series and with Drive on Paris still out of print this might scratch a similar itch for me.

Let's just say that if this game is delayed for any reason you're going to have some grognards in need of grief counseling.

Can't forget this monster which was released earlier this year. A friend of mine has this and the plan is to play the full game over a series of nights at some point soon.

Set for this October from Ben Hull. This is a solitaire game covering the history of the Manchus of a sort (of which I am very proud to say my nephew is a current member of). The game has scenarios from WW II, Korea and Vietnam. Keep Up the Fire!
It's kind of unfortunate that you don't see more solitaire games these days. In the years of Avalon Hill there were a number of great solitaire wargames including such as B-17, London's Burning and RAF. Would be great to see MMP and GMT come out with more solitaire titles.

May or may not be out this year. I've enjoyed following Bowen's design diary for this game. He seems to know the battle well so I'm hopeful for a great game. I'm a sucker anyway for anything Gettysburg.

Just fantastic in my opinion. Can't wait for the next game in the series that covers Sicily which we don't see very often wargames wise. I think the system lends itself well to Sicily. I'm hoping Market Garden will follow after that.

Scheduled for a remake this December from Valley Games. The original was a popular game on game nights years ago when I played at SAGA (Sacramento Area Gaming Association). SAGA was a fantastic gaming club in Sacramento in the late 80s and early 90s run by Mike O'Brien.

Another fantastic magazine game from Against All Odds. I almost hate using the word "magazine" when describing the games from Against All Odds because people get this vision of the magazines games of the 70s and 80s which were rather light weight, fun for a few plays and that's about it. Trust me, what Against All Odds is putting out are first rate quality wargames.

Napoleon invades Russia. Uses the same system generally as Wellington and Napoleonic Wars or at least as far as I understand (I haven't played Napoleonic Wars).

Just a really fun wargame/card game. At it's heart it's a trick taking card game but the theme is so well mixed into the game mechanics that it makes a great game for wargamers looking for a 1 hour filler.

Going into production supposedly in September, there's not a whole lot out there dealing with Chandragupta Maurya! I'm a noob to GBoH (still waiting for my first game of RAN) but this does look cool.

A MMP/IGS reprint of a Japanese game, I'm really looking forward to this. I'm a sucker for the area-impulse games and here's one that's supposedly playable to completion in 4 hours. 4 hour Stalingrad, what a concept. Went off MMP preorder yesterday, should be shipping this week or next.
