I have the collector's bug. I admit it... I'm weak. Here's a list of collecting "Holy Grails" that I have had over the years that I've been lucky enough to find. Feel free to add your "grails" to the list.

Imported this from Sweden from my buddy Carl. I sent him an unopened copy of Starfarers of Catan. Nice trade. Apparently there's tons of Ave Caesar in Sweden.

Sweden isn't the only country where this game is very easy to get. I bought my own copy from here in Finland for about 4US$. I didn't even realize that Ave Caesar is a collector's item until I browsed through the BGG's Marketplace the other day :)

Oct, 2006. Sniped for a tad over $26.00 (+$15.00 s/h) from Germany. Original Ravensburger.

Then I started looking through the files here on BGG, and realized that I could print & play my own copy...then I did.

This was the last of the White Wind games that I needed to finish my set. From all accounts, it was the best one of the series (but I still prefer Santa Fe), and I couldn't find one. I finally won an auction (first and only one that I have seen) for (mumble, mumble) dollars. Let's just say that it's my most expensive one yet. And to add insult to (financial) injury, Elfengold came out before I tried the White Wind copy. So I still haven't played Elfenroads!

Happy Gaming,

I got about the last unused copy in the world (from Funagain, no less, after they got hold of some bankrupt stock). Its only problem is it takes 1 hour per player. But it's worth it! The board is also rather endearing since it contains a typo. It's also a much tougher layout than the Elfenland/Elfengold combo.

I just don't get to play it enough.

It was the high cost of the Action Set that made me decide to buy PitchCar instead of Carabande. I have played both Carabande and PitchCar and the only regret I have in picking PitchCar is absence of the chicanes found in the Action Set (which I prefer to the chicanes found in the first PitchCar extension). I wish that Ferti would release a PitchCar extension that has the x and y chicanes. I am almost to the "make them myself" stage of things... if I was more sure of my dremel skills I would have already made an attempt to make them.

I wouldn't buy the first expansion now. I played a game with both base sets and thought it was much better than with the expansion. the jump is fun at first but almost impossible to execute well three times in a row.

To continue the story, Aldie did acquire another copy, unpunched/in shrink, which was opened at BGG.con 2006, only to find that two of the "flagpoles" were missing (perhaps I should take this under advisement for all of my games that I keep in the shrink...) I played it, and I'm excited to hear that there are talks of a reprint. Even if the bits aren't as fancy as those in the Kosmos version, if they're at least as nice as the tiles in the Hasbro Acquire, I'll be happy.

Tell now!

I managed to win this the only I played it by putting a string of petrol pumps across my plot and just selling the petrol everyone else refined! They spent time, trouble and money drilling and refining, and just kept flooding the market with cheap petrol. But by running six petrol stations diagonally across my plot, I could constantly buy from the market and sell through to the public. By the time they twigged this and started building their own petrol stations, I'd built enough capitol and simply sold my assets to win.
I'd still like a copy though.

One early version of the English rules translation left out one critical word: "red". When you roll doubles, the price of gas on the consumer market goes up five red dots (not just five dots.)

This is one reason many people don't like McMulti. Five dots isn't enough.

Have you tried this one as a two-player game? I've decided that I mostly dislike the game for more than two, but it can be a lot of fun (and not too long, either) for two. If you still don't like it with two, then I'd sell it, if I were you. But then I rarely keep games that I don't actually enjoy playing. If depends what kind of collector you are, I guess.

As of September, 2006, the reprint of the 3rd Edition (2nd Printing) is out for about $90 at Boards and Bits. It is bound to be out of print again soon. I bought a back up copy while I could. Lets see what happens over the next few years.

Side note: I got Antiquity as well. I posted a question "Should I buy this? I have not played it." The general response was, "Dude. Buy it. Play it. If you do not like it, sell it for $400 in a few years. What's the decision?"

In the early 90's, before ebay, a lot of games passed through my hands as I bought them from thrift shops and resold them on usenet. I made a couple of thousand dollars and had a lot of fun (and found good homes for lonely games). One that always fetched a high price was Arkham Horror by Chaosium. I understand they're planning a reprint, which is nice, as I might actually play the thing.

This was a holy grail for me too until I finally got sick of waiting for a "deal" and paid $90 for a copy on eBay. Played it once, thought it was pathetic, and sold it on eBay for $100. So at least I didn't lose any money on it. Definitely a game for collectors, not players.

Dark Tower is a game that I always see people get excited about when someone sets it up at a gaming convention. It tends to get more comments about its value vs it's actual gameplay and usually it's owner gets a lot of "kudo's" from the story of how he obtained his copy.

Maybe it's the sentimental value this game holds for many of us (who had it when we were young) that makes this game be worth so much or it could be the "coolness" factor of the mechanized tower, either way the one copy in the BBG marketplace is selling for $250 dollars. If that isnt Grail-like, I don't know what is!

I sold my copy last year for over $200. I was the only owner, it had all the pieces, and the tower still worked. I doubted that I would ever play it again, so I sold it and bought a bunch of new games that I do play.:)

Not sure why it goes for so much now (although I bet if you calucated what this game cost in 1985 in today's dollars, it might be a bargin). I liked it, but it really isn't all that much fun anymore, IMO, and you can get several java ports off the 'net...

We played this so much back in the day that it was wore out and trashed within two years. Due to this, I don't have to kick myself that it was thrown out long ago, as I doubt anyone would pay for a super-glued darktower and broken/missing pieces. Would like to play again once, but I'm not spending $250 to do it!

I remember this game being pretty pricey even at release. Still a good game for bringing others in. I agree it was much more unique at the time, but still fun today. I play the PC version now that was created by fellow fans of the game. This is the one game in my pre-marriage pile that my wife loves and will play with me. That makes it worth the $$$ on eBay for sure. Great fun for four and not so bad even today. Definetly expensive today to get, play the freebie on the PC if you go this route now. Of course you'll miss out on the Tower and other tangible perks. You will save $250 for use in buying more modern games.

I've been trying to track down a copy for about 5 years or so (I spent almost 12 years getting Divine Right, so I'm not in a rush). I find this a strange one becasue no one seems to play it, but everyone hoards their copy. Maybe now Decision games is going to re-release it some of the old copies will make the light of day at more reasonable prices.

"... no one seems to play it, but everyone hoards their copy..."

Several reasons. Although it's very long, it is a very good game. I don't play it because solitaire it's boring, but unfortunately it's very hard to get opponents - the subject is a bit esoteric and I don't want to threaten friendships by asking for a large commitment from people to play a complex, lengthy and somewhat arcane game. (Also the bookkeeping can get a bit onerous and confusing at times).

Also it had a good reputation when released and is now collectable. Why not keep it?

I played this one at BGG.con 2006, and I think it's a great deduction game, but with a grail price on it, one could just as easily make a copy from a discarded Rummikub set, some model paints, and a set of printable business cards (as the files for printing the cards are in the game entry).

An original and gripping little game of real-estate investment and development. A little random for current tastes but still quite fun. Good luck finding it. A friend of mine bought a copy for $5 at an auction at one gaming convention, and when we conferred afterwards she agreed that if I had been in the room she would have bought it for $120. (Strangely, she didn't agree that therefore she owed me $115 for not showing up.)

On the wargame end, this is one of the big ones, interesting considering that it's only 5 years old. Copies go for $250+ these days on eBay (although it listed new at $89-ish, so that may not represent quite the percentage increase of, say, Elfenroads). I think the appeal is that it's a fundamentally clean, playable system, but one which gives you an incredible feel for the details of the operation, and DAK covers a campaign with a lot of drama and scope. Do people play it? Sure, there always seems to be one game going on at cons that have big games, so that makes it quite unusual for a wargame collectible. On the other hand, more than a few people I know sit on two copies which may artifically deflate supply.

Well, a GREAT list and envy comes to mind when I saw "Full Metal Planete" on the list.
My collectibles includes: Titan, Ave Caesar, Elfen Roads, Talisman 3rd ED. + ALL expansions, Formule Dé 2nd. ED. + all official 2nd. ED. tracks and the NON-colored MEXICO official club track, orig. Armada, the original Robo Rally and expansions, Warhammer's Mighty Empires...and more.
I won a £16 bidding for 1987 Dungeon Quest in mint cond., but it was not honored by the seller, damn pirate!
Still lookin' for UpFront and Kremlin, to complete my +70 games library.
I might be gloating, but I still don't have "Full Metal Planete", that I let slip through my greasy fingers back in 1993, at a fleemarket in Paris... I didn't want to spend the measly 35FF ($6) that the frog asked of me - bummer!!!
The game was in mint condition, but I opted for "RISK", still in plastic wrap, but in FRENCH! 2 x Bummer!!!

Okay, this is making me sick now... up until a couple of years ago, the Canterbury Adventure Gaming Society had a cupboard full of games on campus... including Ave Caesar, Arkham Horror and a few other crackers.

Last year, start of academic year, they go to open it... new lock. The get a porter to open it... one cupboard full of cleaning gear.

I have since heard rumours that the games are safe, were spirited away by the master of the college, etc etc, but that was about as scary a day as it gets for a geek...
