As I was adding an item to Jody's list Rituals performed upon opening a game for the first time http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi... I realised that this was worthy of its own list.

Box fart or fart-factor as it is described in the BGG Glossary is that "apparent 'fart' sound" that can occur when a game box is opened or closed.

To check for box fart when opening place the game on a flat surface then firmly hold opposing sides of the lid and lift vertically perpendicular to the flat surface. If the lid slides silently off then you obviously have no box fart or need your ears checked.

To check for box fart when closing a game first ensure that all components have been packed away the hold the lid above the game box and move it straight down onto to the box.

Necessary requirements for good box fart are sturdy box construction and a snug fit between the lid and the base parts.

Please add your own games that have good box fart and describe where possible.

Oh and I should mention that there is also a microbadge (not mine) mb

I list Ticket to Ride here as our copy has excellent box fart, possibly because it is less than a month old.

The box fart is quite lengthy, deep with a sort of warbling quality.

With the right players, just opening the game can add considerably to the gaming experience

I've been on this site for 10 years now, and I'm far from sick of games, but I think I am, to some degree, sick of learning too many new games. I'm also tired of playing 4+ hr multiplayer games, but I'll still happily play really long games 2 player.

The longest and most sustained box fart in my collection. Good volume, quality tone, and slight vibration.

Happily, no odor other than wood and cardboard.

This is the newest game I have and it's a pretty big box so the box fart is a long one. This must have been a deliberate choice by the game publisher since the box is about three times deeper than it needs to be in order to hold the components. So when you open this box, everyone in the room knows it.

You ain't heard nothin' until you hear this one cut loose. It's an extra deep box which clearly helps the resonation and acoustics. Also, the box is more flexible than most, which actually helps it in this case. The box fart is incredibly deep and loud. It's like a tuba.

When opening this box, you only get a small inkling of its full capabilities. When closing, it hurts the ears, it's so loud! It's as if it doesn't want to be put away. Aw....

Upon reading this list I realized that I Had to Find Out. I would never get to sleep if I didn't discover which of my games had the fartiest box. I knew right off the bat who the two prime suspects were: the new AH version of Acquire and El Grande. I was postive that I had heard some shocking eructations from one of those two boxes at one point or another.

At the risk of waking up my son with stentorian wind breakage, I got down on my hands and knees and crawled into my closet, where some of the larger games are kept. I reached El Grande first, grasped the lid, and gave it a metaphorical pull of the finger. Nothing! Not a peep. Then I remembered that it was Mexico and not Spain that was so pathologically fond of the frijoles. Too bad. If I just could have squeaked out a little toot I bet the castillo would have been a kick-ass echo chamber.

I shifted over a couple of feet and grabbed the Acquire box. Now we were going to hear a little trombone. I braced myself and gave it a good yank, expecting to confront every fart ever stilfed at a Wall Street business luncheon all rolled into one shameful honk. There was a discreet poot, nothing more. Huh?

Now I was really confused. I was positive that I had heard some raunchy box flatulence from somewhere in my collection, and I had to know who the culprit was. The old axiom of "he who smelt it, dealt it" was of no use here, as was its corollary, "he who denied it, supplied it." Without any kind of snappy rhyme to guide my way, I simply had to try every box. Kosmos big box: silent as the grave. Alea: just a graceful whish (too classy, probably does it after everyone's gone to bed). Mayfair: a little gassy, but nothing that would get you kicked out of a restaurant.

Suddenly I froze. No...it couldn't be. My hands trembled as I gently lifted my beloved Liberte out of its drawer. No, not you my precious. Certainly it wasn't you. Not my favorite game. I set it down on the bed and gingerly tried to lift the cover.

Oh man but that box ripped one off. It was like some kind of gastronomical gunshot rattling the windows and setting off car alarms down the block. As I stood there blinking in the last dying echoes I realized that my hat had been knocked off.

My wife poked her head in the door. "Crack a window if you're going to do that, honey."

Why oh why didn't I let well enough alone? Here I sit, broken hearted....

Couldn't resist trying a few games out after seeing this list. Most were deeply disappointing - Puerto Rico was a no-show! But Formula De - wow!!! Perhaps it's the size, shape and sturdiness of the box; perhaps all DoW games are fartmeisters.
Loud and fruity, with variable pitch depending how hard you strain. To close the lid that is. In fact, it's almost like a Formula One car going past at speed - I can just imagine Murray Walkers commentary...

I had fought valiantly to restrain a compulsion to check my collection for box farts, but curiosity eventually got the better of me.

I turned to my latest arrival, a spanking-new edition of Santiago. It emitted a faint, quick little toot, barely perceptible to the ear.

My beloved J immediately revealed an instinct for predicting the Acoustics of Box Farting. She noted the shallowness of the Santiago box, and that there would barely be any time for air to be trapped in between box and lid before the top would relinquish its grip and thereby all potential for further raspberry-making.

She suggested that if I really wanted to indulge in a resonant Box Fart, that I fetch a box with higher sides. Out came I'm the Boss, and sure enough: as the box slipped slowly down out of the lid, it emitted a loud, sustained, rapid-vibration burst of flatulence.

Now, I won't deny that I helped the cause along, by gripping the lid tighter than I normally would. In fact, it took a little practice to produce a consistently sonorous Box Fart.

I rationalize this, however, by pointing out that it is the performer as well as the theater who creates refined sound. Just as it takes a practiced musician to unleash the acoustic potential of Carnegie Hall, it takes a gift for performance to fully tap a game's potential for Box Fart.

I hereby postulate that the two principal contributors to Box Fart are:
1) Depth of Box
2) Tightness of Lid, which is often related to Sturdiness of Lid, in turn related to Newness.

I've actually started to wonder if
3) Squareness of Lid
is also a factor, but I have difficulty quantifying why this might be. Still, it does seem that a long, thin box is less likely to fart than is a square one.

Discuss.

Much like the search for the murderer we had to investigate the rest of our collection. Ticket to Ride was clearly out in front and a couple of other entries have been commented above. But what about the rest? I did the physical testing with Melissa adding suggestions about how I should hold the box when opening and occasional commentary and classification.

On a whole the small box games were a dissapointment, there was barely a peep out of anything smaller than your standard old AH bookcase game size.

Amun-Re
Nothing at first, but the last third suddenly emits a creaky door fart.

El Grande
A high ranking game, but nothing more than a slight phht on opening and closing.

Starfarers of Catan
The construction of the box and components promised much, but all it delivered was a French Horn sound right near the end of opening and an occasional peep when closing

Starfarers of Catan 5-6 player expansion
Nothing.

Settlers of The Stone Age
Not consistent but when there it was quite loud, not melodious but with a real sense of urgency.

Settlers of Catan
Given the age of this box we didn't expect much. Nothing on opening but a short trumpeting upon closing.

Mammoth Hunters
You'd think Mammoths would be loud and deep wouldn't you? Well you would be wrong, just an occasional short trumpeting.

Age of Steam
Not even a hiss of Steam on opening, a reasonably high pitched but short eruction upon closing.

Pirate's Cove
Evidently a different box design than Ticket to Ride as there was merely an occasional deep but short fart upon opening.

Mystery of the Abbey
When opening this box, you hear a vow of silence. Closing it however is an entirely different story - quite loud and ructatious.

Armada
The box feels like it is going to deliver a mighty salvo, but then there is nothing but the sounds of silence.

Risk Parker Brothers edition
Silent on opening and a standard imperial fart when closing.

Java
Another box that feels like it going to deliver, but you are presented with silence on opening but rewarded with a short but loud tenor when closing.

Now we come to the entry for this list - my copy would be approximately twelve years old and well used and travelled so I was not expecting much...

Cluedo - Master Dective
On opening a short but quite deep sound, but closing was very suprising, a very loud and deep fart with excellent reverb. Not quite as good as Ticket to Ride, but admirable competition for the AH Acquire.

There are more games to be tested, but most of them are in the spare room and we have a guest at the moment. So they will have to wait, including a couple of the old SPI monster games which hold promise; whether or not they deliver - time will tell.

20. Board Game: WarCraft: The Board Game [Average Rating:6.18 Overall Rank:2008]

I knew that Joe Gola had killed me when I remembered to check for Box Fart in our last gaming session. We had just finished A Game of Thrones when I was sitting face to face with a stack of three large square boxes that looked like they would Fart well. They were quite thick, they were made of sturdy glossy board, and they *smelled strange*. Might have been the new-paper-and-ink smell, but it might have been something else...

The suspects:

Age of Mythology: The Boardgame (Eagle Games) - Buncha old civilizations and tons of monsters! Definitely had potential.

Warcraft: The Boardgame (Fantasy Flight) - It had orcs, elves and dead things. Great chances here.

Pirate's Cove (Days of Wonder) - Same size, same material as Warcraft, but it had pirates! If there was a sure thing for Box Fart, this was it.

So I grabbed Age of Mythology from the top of the stack and pulled the cover off in ane smooth motion. AoM ripped a nice, mid-pitched Box Fart that caught the attention of the other Geeks in the room who were discussing the merits of Stark betraying Greyjoy in our just-concluded game. I put the cover back on AoM, with a slightest of sounds, with no comment.

Setting AoM aside, I next took Warcraft and pulled it cover off with one upward motion. The time the flatulent sound was much louder, and stopped Al, who was carrying a tray of icy beverages to the table, in his tracks. I still got no words, just bug eyes from the other Geeks, who had forgotten their Westeros discussion and were transfixed by my activity.

I replaced the cover of Warcraft, again with nary a whimper, and pulled Pirate's Cove towards me. There was an air of anticipation as I braced my hands on either side of the box cover and pulled it up. The rip was so prodigious that the Geeks in the room were thanking the heavens that it wasn't a real Fart, for it would certainly have slain all of us in the room.

So now I know, and can confirm some of the things that Chuck outlined above: pristine boxes made of glossy, thick cardboard, fairly deep (in that case of the three above at least four inches or so), and in all probability, being square does help. So ends the experiment of a lifetime. Until the next stack of Box Fart suspects.

My copy of Twilight Imperium 2nd Edition is practically silent when you open it, but closing it cuts loose a sound that can only be described as "moist".

List owner's note - Dear contributors please not that this entry is for Twilight Imperium 2nd Edition not 3rd Edition. To avoid cross contamination please post your comments about Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition under item 30 on Page 2 of this list. Share and Enjoy!

Well, when I read the instructions, I thought that it had to be a game that had tight fitting boxsides; much like when you wear tight fitting jeans it squeezes the cheeks together to provide superb flatulence reverberation (not unlike a tuba player's lips pressed hard in the mouthpiece might I add... and no I haven't tested these theories personally, merely made observations using the scientific method). Anyway, I KNEW that Hive by GenFour would be it! I just KNEW IT! SO I do the test of my hypothesis, the sides are so tight that you have to get a crowbar to get the box lid off - so know fart, but like the extra tight, hip hugging jeans that appear spray painted on, you need some wiggling and jiggling to get the box open - I don't want to reveal too much from my new course (referenced later, but it is not purely a friction phenomena). Ahh something like that very difficult anticipation for a guy when he finds a hot chick and needs... *SLAP* OK, dear I won't go any further.

Anyway, so then I realized that you also need depth! the sides must be tight (but not too tight) and the box needed to have some depth so that the reverberation of the in rushing air would cause the cause vibrations of the side. (For those of you that would like a deeper exploration, I am giving a lesson on the physics of box farts on Tuesdays at 10am starting October 26th.) Having seen the Ticket to Ride comment, I pulled out my trusty copy of Pirate's Cove; closest thing I had - it was made by Days of Wonder. And the fart it let out was like the entire crew relaxed with simultaneous rum-induced gassiness that would have increased their sailspeed by at least 3. Now I know why they call themselves Days of Wonder, because I was Wondering for Days on the box design that caused such a ruckus. Hence, I now have accumulated the knowledge of mankind on box farts and bring to you a short course on its physics - please feel free to register by email/paypal for $1495.50 for the 3 week course.
