Boardgames, especially Monopoly, are deeply engrained in other aspects of our popular culture. What boardgames have been featured in TV episodes or movies, either as a central plot or with the characters seen playing (as opposed to a prop)? I'm sure there must be others than Monopoly, so feel free to add!

This Red Dwarf episode reminded me of real conversations I have had with folks who could recount every die roll in a game they played. They seemed oblivious to the fact that I was squeezing my head between my knees and emitting a low moan.

Interestingly enough, Janice Kim was the uncredited consultant on the game. An exhaustive list of go in TV and movies can be found here: http://www.eurogofed.org/history/filmography.htm including comments on how the editing of A Beautiful Mind puts many moves of the go game in the wrong order.

I don't remember the hoarding, but I remember both the father and Alex making up words. The father's fake word meant "to bathe" or "to shower". Alex's following fake word meant "to towel". Why is this in my head?

"The board game referred to as chess during the confrontation with Sky is Go, or Weiqi, an ancient game of strategy still played today."

"Star Trek: Voyager", episode "Night". It's called a different (probably alien) name, but Tom Paris and B'Elanna seem to be playing it by the written rules: she gives him a piece and he places it on the board, then he gives her another piece.

Yeah, I just saw that episode. It's shown only briefly as they had each other pieces to play, they call it something else, but it's definitely Quarto! (I wonder if the alien name includes an exclamation point, too?)

Weird. I just watched the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Real Life," in which the Doctor creates a holographic family so he can experience family life. It's a pretty awful episode (featuring a Space Tornado!) but in one scene there's a copy of Terrace on the coffee table of the Doctor's holographic living room.

I didn't realize this had any appearances outside of a few TNG episodes.

He placed it there (on the 5th anniversary of Bush being elected president, I believe) as a metaphor for the red/blue political divide.

Cable TV Series: Weeds
Season: 2
Episode: Must Find Toes

Nancy Botwin (Mary Louise Parker) drops by Peter's house unexpectedly (Her new lover). Peter's geeky teenage son, Tim, is with him for the weekend. There is an awkward tension, Nancy says she'd better go and then the dialogue is as follows:

Peter: "No, no, no, you should stay. Tim and I were just going to play a game of Carcass or something."

Tim: "Carcassonne! It's inspired by the medeival town of Carcassonne in Southern France, which is famous for it's formidable city walls, and it's..."

Nancy (interrupting with a condescending tone): "That sounds so exciting!"

Tim: "You didn't even let me explain."

Nancy: "I'm sorry, I'm not any good at games."

Tim: "My mom is. She must be smarter than you."

Nancy (muttering under her breath): "She must be."

Eddie Izzard does a few bits about Escape From Colditz in his stand up routine.

"My grandmother, she had the life-force - she had that extra power-pack, you know in 'Escape From Colditz - The Boardgame' and you could get those extra bits of rope... well, she had a lot of life-force packs, y'know, she had a load of them... She just kept going - she had three strokes, and she was paralysed down the left side, but she was going - on the zimmer y'know, racing on the zimmer in the old folks home."

"And later on, you realize that bees aren’t so bad, because they only sting you once, and they only sting you as a last resort, which is the equivalent of the “do or die” card in “Escape from Colditz, The Board Game.” "
