After Randy Cox suggested it in a previous geeklist (The most expensive games in the marketplace, http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/34796), here is a list with the most expensive games sold (not just listed) in the marketplace in the recorded history, in any country. I excluded games with painted minis or CCG. Also, I excluded a couple of games with prices that seem nonsense, as $5000 for a The Settlers of Catan or $4258 for a New England. Please tell me is some of those prices are rigth, and I will include them in the list.
One interesting thing, there are three different versions of The Settlers of Catan listed here.

An autographed copy of Poisson d'Avril went for US$1740 just before the Marketplace was implemented on BGG. That was quite a number of years ago, so adjusting for inflation it would easily be the equivalent of over US$2000 now.

That would be about right. A while ago I found a pile of Poissonsd'A. in a murky thrift shop, they were all still shrinked and in spotless condition.
I sold them outside Marketplace ( blush ), mostly at auctions, and they went for around $2k each time.

Because of this fortune, I will move home to the Bahamas the first day next April.

Amazingly and incredibly, I thrifted one of these some time back, I paid no less than a buck for it, as I recall. It musta come from a smokers' home cause it was a bit funky. It was complete and still fully playable though.

It now sits in a bank vault, insured.

I hope I won't die before I decide to sell it and live the high life. I can't sell it in the current economical situation, as I know I would get but a small fraction of what I can get in another future, time.

I bought a handful of them many years ago and shrinkwrapped them. I was able to sell them for twice as much that way.

Thought there were only 300 or so sets of the early key* games published, though I wouldn't have thought it commanded that sort of premium...

It's all because of the limited number of games that Breese made, the fact that he only had a new game every two years and that he had quite a dedicated following after his first couple games. There was always demand for his games every Essen and that hype generated some crazy economics at times.

It was the tip of the iceberg. For a full listing see the following geeklist on page 8. In addition, he had me eBay a stack of his old still-in-shrink Iron Crown LoTR modules for half the profit. We ended up splitting over $1100 (after expenses). It more than paid for all of the games I bought several times over.

http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/21580/page/8

As I said before, I used up all my good karma on this find.

Yea, there are 2 local shops here that have had copies of this sitting collecting dust since its release. Since they never sell below MSRP [or above for that matter, which is nice on things that are out of print], I suspect they'll continue to sit...

This game's prices go up and down like a rollercoaster ride. The current print run runs out, the price goes absurdly high. Then they print another run and prices return to normal.

Based on the exchange rate I suspect what you paid in Euros is about what I paid in dollars ($200ish) for a similar set with expansion, though yours sounds to be in better shape [mine had an unpunched expansion but no box for it]. It's the expansion that drives the price to the moon on this one--I watched several unpunched expansions go for $200+ on ebay at the time...

I'd personally be interested in seeing a second page, though I know that's more work. Good list either way =)

(Also, if you don't want to include 'silly' entries, you might want to remove the first item, though it is kinda comical to see it up there )

These prices may or may not make sense depending on the type of game owner you are. Some people prefer to just play the game while others care about specific releases etc.

If you just care about being able to play the game, you have to beware reprintings. My friend bought Family Business for $40 or so and a couple months later they began printing it again with a sale price of roughly $12. I like the art a lot more on the old version, but not $28 more.
