You know, I've spent a lot of time here on the Geek, but it seems like I'm always learning something new. So the idea of this geeklist is to share those little tricks that it took you awhile to figure out, so that others can learn from your experience.
Made me think that more and more BGG is getting to be like a Mario video game with all kinds of hidden ways to get points/lives/power ups and what not. No one knows how everything works or where everything is and new stuff keeps showing up all the time.

Special Pics/Emoticons There is a huge range of other pictures that you can add to any post besides the emoticons you see available for selection. All you need to do is add a colon : before and after the following phrases and you get the connected picture...
d6-1 = d6-2 =
d6-3 = d6-4 =
d6-5 = d6-6 =
d10-1 = d10-2 =
d10-3 = d10-4 =
d10-5 = d10-6 =
d10-7 = d10-8 =
d10-9 = d10-0 =
sheep = wood =
brick = wheat =
ore = bluetrain =
blacktrain = greentrain =
yellowtrain = redtrain =
purpletrain = coal =
I know there are more I'm forgetting. Anyone who wants to add them, please help.

I'd really like to see the dice faces from Memoir 44 and Battlelore. It would make writing session reports that much more fun
There are several games that have special dice features that would really make it easy to do session reports for if we had an easy way to add in the graphic.
Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.
Ooh yes, now a little to the left - my nose is itchy. No, no the other left! Now what colour is 12 supporter badge going to be I wonder?
Here's the full list from the View More Emoticons section. The emoticon followed by the text that needs a colon before and after it to produce the emoticon.
Note the scrabble letters can be created manually or you can click on Scrabblify and enter your text.

Inline Pictures If you ever want two pictures to line up next to each other instead of on 2 separate lines just add the word inline after the ID# of the pictures.
Example: Remove the spaces from this [ImageID = 254419inline][ImageID = 254417inline]

Linking to a specific item Did you ever want to link someone directly to a specific geeklist item, or a specific response in a post, that's easy as pie.
Or right click on the link in question and pick COPY (the exact term varies depending on browser), no need for the intermediate step of properties, and then highlighting, and then hitting control C

It does depend on the browser, but mine says "Copy Shortcut". So that works as well. Yargo is edumacating me.
And finally, there is a new tag that can be used on the forums, to directly quote a section of a wikipage on a forum post. To quote, use the following format: [wikitext=pagename#anchor]
This has been updated. Now you simply click on the number of the geeklist item to get it's ID# (in the URL bar) and then click the Insert XX drop down menu and go to geeklist item. Simple!
You can also do this same thing with the little page icon that is to the left of the date and time posting on each item. This is found in many different forums (not just BGG) and is the more standard way to do this.

Re-sizing images When you post a BGG image into a message it will automatically default to the small size. In order to adjust the size you have to add either square, medium, large, or original after the ID#.

It may have something to do with the image you are trying to use. Some images aren't big enough to have all the different size choices. For instance...
Small -->
Square -->
Medium -->
Large -->
Original -->
It doesn't work in the Medium and Large sizes because the original image was so small.

Posting youtube If you want to post a youtube video that you have found, look in the Address bar on your browser when you are watching the video. Copy the series of characters that come after the "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=" and put it in this format [youtube = u-BfQ7hJ6Po] (minus the spaces of course.)
Me too. For starters, I can't see streaming media here at work. Second, I like reading a review much better then watching a video anyway. I used to always look for Tom Vasal's reviews but now he's doing videos of himself instead so now I need to go elswhere to read a review of a new game.
Randy, do you really think that the guys who do these radio shows are the same people who close caption the show and provide transcripts? When you provide me enough money for a working staff, I'll give you a transcript. Until then, why don't you put out your own conscientious content podcast and show me up?
I completely agree Tom doesn't owe us a transcript but I couldn't help but chuckle at the comment of money. After all, most of us have to buy boardgames if we want to own them. I have a pretty good idea Tom gets most of his for free for his "conscientious" reviews.

I'm curious what makes you think getting free games means someone also has unlimited time or the resources to hire a staff?

I think Tom was being ironic about someone else's use of the word "conscientious" used with the word "reviews."
Who cares if he does or does not get "free" games to be reviewed? Where do you get the silly notion that it will taint... anything? The man is a hobby reviewer, he is not pretending to be a Fourth Estate journalist balancing the governing powers and the public. His narrative is in the first person and is blatantly presented as opinion.
For those who have never worked in media, the whole process is much more work and money than it appears. Even if it seems small like a podcast or YouTube video. To think it is cheap and easy is to reveal your inexperience.
To those who want transcripts, I recommend you try to write one from one of Tom's shows. It is hard work that requires a lot of concentration, rewinding, relistening, overcoming boredom, and mad typing skills. You will quickly discover why transcript writers are a highly paid writing specialty.
Tom presents himself as what he is... a man who loves gaming and reviewing games. It is pretty obvious (at least to me), that he is a father, husband, man of the cloth, community activist and breadwinner who is sharing his gaming passion. His talent make his reviews gifts to us all.
Considering the amount of work required to do what he does (from another continent no less), he pays more for a game in time and work (that some consider "free") than you do paying full retail at your FLGS. Don't believe me? Walk a mile in his shoes and find out. After you do that, I will then take your objections seriously.
I don't know Tom Vasel... never met him. My opinions are from working in the media biz/academia for decades: newspapers, ad agencies, media research agencies and public relations.
Support comes in many forms: community involvement, forum posts, submitting data, word-of-mouth advertising, financial donations... All of these are vital to this site, and you have my sincere thanks for participating in any of them.

How can I display an image referencing a URL?
Just nest the image inside the URL tags. For example:
Edit: note that the entire row becomes clickable, rather than just the image itself. Clicking well to the right of the image will still follow the link.

You can avoid this with [floatleft][/floatleft][clear]:
This thread and the geeklist it links to help me make much better use of the QuickBar. Now, if my wife is logged in and asks me to find something, I sometimes find myself lost as everything is conveniently in my QuickBar.
If you submit a game and want to make sure it is in the queue or you would like to know that the game you intend to submit is not already in the queue, then you need the link for the queue. I still don't know where to find this link, but someone told me and I copied it: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/userqueue.php

You can misattribute quotes by just changing the name in quotes within the q instruction.
in the first bracket at the front end of the quote, after the "q" you need to put an "=" and then put the name in quotations marks, and then end the bracket. the second bracket at the back end of the quote is the same, so it's just a bracket, slash, q, and then close bracket.

This tool is absolutely priceless when you are trying to find valuable geekbuddies. If you enter just your username it will match you with other users who have rated games similarly to you.
I apologise to potential users, but I've just left home this morning and will be going on holidays directly after work, and won't be back until September 29. I added Thoia to the list this morning and everyone else will have to wait until then. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the stats generation program (and the web server itself) keep running until I get back.
There's so many things on the Geek that many people take for granted as existing but that aren't immediately obvious and that even long-time users sometimes don't know exist, such as:
This isn't part of BGG but these are links that people are constantly asking for. They're BoardGameSearch and BoardGamePrices, both of which allow you to easily comparison shop online.

Hey Mister "BGG ADMIN", as long as you stopped in here, any chance you could use your administrative abilities to edit or delete the comment that has stretched out this geeklist to annoying width?
Here's where I explain how to add polls to your geeklist ....
Problem is I don't know, and can't find it either, so I'm hoping for some Geek to create a Geeklist with Tricks of the Geek, in which I find a description of how to do it.
It's time to play the music, It's time to light the lights...

It's quite simple. You create the poll in a thread and once you save the poll a shortcut like this [poll = 3260] will appear in the text box. Just copy that and don't save the thread. Then paste it into the geeklist. Unfortunately the polls in geeklists are a little temperamental, since they really aren't designed for that use.

You can also use the same trick to put a poll in your user profile text. Again, not designed for doing that, so you mileage may vary.
You have to create the polls in a thread. Click Forums/Post New Thread Click on the green tick to make a poll. There are lots of options, it takes some practice to get a poll you want. If you want to put the poll in a geeklist rather than the thread then when you have finished the poll copy and paste the [ pollid xxxx] text into your geeklist. You do not then have to publish the thread. The poll exists outside of the thread.
Ever once in a while...not so much as anyone would notice, BGG goes down. Usually there's a bright, friendly message letting us know that there is a place to go to while away the time while waiting for BGG to come back up. Sometimes there isn't. That's when having this handy link in your favorites can save your sanity: http://groups.google.com/group/BGG_Down.
Well, when BGG goes down I'll just surf on over to this nice GeekList, which I've bookmarked, and I'll be able to find the link to the . . . Google . . group . . . . never mind.

Heh. Actually, if you google "BGG Down", it'll come up. It's that popular.
If you don't know the GAMEID offhand (though, who hasn't memorize all 30000+ game ids), you could also use the "Game" button in a post to find the right id (one of the Formatting buttons under the smilies on the Comment/Post screen).
Just imagine the red offboard up here. I'll create it Real Soon Now...
Yes, I know a proper 18XX tile should have a tile number.

But if you use the Game button while adding a Geeklist entry, it will helpfully change the entry you're adding to be that game.
I guess, with the wealth of images and QUALITY available, my images don't match up, and are not worthy of being added to the encyclopedia of knowledge that is BGG.
Woe is my forlorn little image from a spectacular gaming session that will never see the light of day amongst Geekdom!
NOT SO! My little moments of customization or artistic genius WILL flourish (well, be available, really. There's only five so far).
If you add the image to your personal gallery, you can slide them into regular posts and Geeklists, even though they aren't "available".

I dunno if its a "trick", but I find it useful! (If the OP or a Mod finds this NOT "tricky" please feel free to remove this!)
Quickbar Links Here is one that may seem too obvious for inclusion on this list, but it was one of those features that I kept looking at and thinking I will find out how to do that when I have a minute or two. Of course on BGG a minute or two is never spent on those intentions and it must of been about 6 months later when I finally got around to using the quickbar.
By clicking on one of the "+" signs on the quickbar list, which is found in the upper right hand corner of most BGG pages, it will save the page you are currently on. Then by clicking on the word "Quickbar" it will allow you to edit so you can give the link a name. Click the "save" button and your ready to go.
There are 10 pages of quickbars giving 100 shortcuts. This also means that links may be categorised. Someone may correct me if I am wrong but as you can put any link into the quickbar you could use non BGG links too?

In the "Insert Geek Link" you would select "Reply". To find the ID# just hover over or click on, the place where it says "Posted..." with a day and time after it. You will find a number in the URL (the number is actually repeated twice) that's the ID number you need. So it will look like this:
